DOUBLE FLAT: Irvin Mayfield, one of New Orleans' most prominent musicians, and Jay Zainey, a U.S. district judge, disagreed Wednesday on what drove Mayfield to skim $1.3 million from the New Orleans Public Library Foundation. Mayfield said it was his ego and drive "to focus on the winning by any means necessary." Zainey said it was arrogance and greed, as he sentenced Mayfield and co-defendant Ronald Markham to 18 months in prison.

FAMILY TIES: Jack Strain's relatives are playing a key role this week in the former St. Tammany Parish sheriff's sex crimes trial. On Tuesday, one testified that when he was 15 years old, Strain let him drink alcohol at Strain's home and fondled his groin. On Wednesday, another testified that Strain began pawing him when he was 10.
