Invitation to Discussion Forum: Nelson Mandelaâs 100th Birthday - Be the legacy! 16 October 2018, 18.00, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung
Ladies and Gentlemen,
this year Nelson Mandela, freedom fighter and the first freely elected President of South Africa, would have been 100 years old. Mandela was a shining light both politically and morally. He dedicated his life to the struggle against apartheid and oppression. The price he paid was 27 years in prison. After his release in 1990 he devoted himself to achieving justice and reconciliation between blacks and whites in an effort to unite a deeply divided country. He was an inspiration and role model for people all over the world  he remains so today.
Under the slogan "Be the legacy!" we would like to remember Nelson Mandela, honour his lifeÂs work, outline the stages of his life and discuss his legacy for South Africa and the world. In doing so we would also like to look at the current situation in South Africa and what Nelson Mandela's legacy means to today's young people.
We cordially invite you to participate in our discussion, within the framework of this joint event convened by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, the South African Embassy in Berlin and the German Foreign Office.

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
in diesem Jahr wäre Nelson Mandela, der Freiheitskämpfer und erste frei gewählte Präsident Südafrikas, 100 Jahre alt geworden. Mandela galt politisch wie moralisch als Lichtgestalt, als eine Art Sonderfall der Geschichte. Er widmete sein Leben dem Kampf gegen Apartheid und Unterdrückung. 27 Jahre verbrachte er dafür im Gefängnis. Nach seiner Freilassung im Jahr 1990 setzte er sich für Ausgleich und Versöhnung zwischen Schwarzen und WeiÃen ein, um das tief gespaltene Land zu vereinen. Er war Inspiration und Vorbild für Menschen auf der ganzen Welt â und ist es noch immer.
Unter dem Motto âBe the legacy!â wollen wir an Nelson Mandela erinnern, sein Lebenswerk würdigen, Stationen seines Lebens nachzeichnen und über sein Vermächtnis für Südafrika und die Welt diskutieren. Dabei wollen wir auch die heutigen Verhältnisse in Südafrika in den Blick nehmen und darüber diskutieren, was jungen Menschen Nelson Mandela heute bedeutet.
Wir laden Sie herzlich ein, an dieser Kooperationsveranstaltung zwischen der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, der südafrikanischen Botschaft in Berlin und dem Auswärtigen Amt teilzunehmen.
