 Dear Sir or Madam,

we would like to invite you to our second event in the new seminar series which is jointly organised by the Austrian Institute for International Affairs (oiip) and the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw):

The end of US protection and the future of Ukraine and Europe

Transatlantic relations have been under severe strain. The Trump administration's policy shift on the Ukraine war, peace talks with Russia excluding European partners, the weakening of NATO, and threats of tariffs on European goods have put both the EU and Ukraine under pressure.

In the second episode of our series Europe in a Fragmented World: Geo-economic and Geo-political Dynamics, we will address the following questions: Can Ukraine withstand US pressure? What about the natural minerals deal that the Trump administration is advocating? Can Europe's economy bear the burden? And will Europe be able to establish an autonomous security architecture?

*The new world has been characterised by volatility, uncertainty, and unpredictability. The emergence of a new multi-polar order, authoritarianism and isolationism and militarism have challenged the liberal world order, multilateralism and its institutions. The European Union which has been built on liberal values has struggled in adapting to the shifts in global economic and political power balances. At the same time, European democracies themselves are under attack. They have been threatened by authoritarian populism, nationalism, growing social disparities, the effects of artificial intelligence de-industrialisation and economic dependencies on resources and supply chains. The seminar series titled Europe in a Fragmented World: Geo-economic and Geo-political Dynamics, jointly organised by the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw) and the Austrian Institute for International Affairs - oiip aims at analysing geopolitical and geoeconomic trends and their impact on Europe's future from an interdisciplinary angle. The series will thereby contribute to the many debates on how to reposition Europe in an increasingly politically instable and economically competitive international system.

We are looking forward to your participation!

Best regards,
