About $1.34bn is owed to thousands of creditors linked to the Whyalla steelworks , administrators have revealed while describing the ‘running on empty’ state the business was in when they took over.

Around Whyalla , some businesses with links to the steelworks had been down to their last few thousand dollars in the bank, but government intervention has put a pep back in their step.

Frustrations from state governments are growing as stricken Star Entertainment remains in limbo as the gaming group works to thrash out a rescue plan to refinance its $430m debt mountain.
