Inside Montreal’s New Waterfront Tetris Tower

If you find yourself visiting the old Montreal port this summer, you’re going to see something new and a little weird: a 65-metre tower jutting asymmetrically into the sky, signalling the entrance to the Grand Quay of the Port of Montreal. The tower, designed by Montreal firm Provencher_Roy, features a glass observation deck with a sweeping 360-degree city view.

The Montreal skyline has remained pretty stagnant for several decades so a fresh development is big news. We’re celebrating its arrival in our monthly section called “The Building,” where we spotlight cool structures that are popping up across the country. “The tower,” says Carly Pews for Maclean’s, “has injected some much-needed fun into the port’s overall function.”

Merritt, a 7,000-person city in the B.C. Interior, has been under level three water restrictions since April. To cope, Leanne Cleaveley and her husband collect grey water, limit baths and use a drip irrigation system at home. Usually, at this time of year, the community is just entering level one—which leaves Cleaveley anxious about what the upcoming summer will bring. “It’s not just the drought I fear, but wildfires and flooding, too,” she writes in this essay for Maclean’s.
