JULY 25, 2024

Dear reader,

I generally think $680 dinners (plus tip) are designed for finance bros, trust fund babies and other assorted glitterati. But when you’re getting three world-beating chefs for the price of one, you have to rethink the math. I’m speaking, of course, about the buzzy new uptown restaurant LSL, helmed by Didier Leroy, the Frenchiest of the French chefs; Masaki Saito of the exclusive six-seat Yorkville restaurant that bears his name, and Christian Le Squer, of Le Cinq in Paris. Can this wild foodie experiment work? Our writer Mark Pupo is optimistic.

LSL isn’t the first tasting menu in Toronto to debut with an eye-watering price: Sushi Masaki Saito is also a cool $680. Aburi Hana rings in at an almost-affordable-sounding $430. And Kappo Sato is a practically cheap-as-chips option at $300. I guess with inflation, that’s just what magic costs these days.

Also in today’s newsletter: Inside the kitchen of Jared and Miki Ferrall, the owners of Crafty Ramen. Plus, a menu tour of Paradise Grapevine’s new patio on Geary. For all our food-and-drink coverage, visit torontolife.com or subscribe to our print edition.
