What was supposed to be a "kinder, gentler" place for rehabilitation has had problems maintaining order. A number of youths have carried shanks, and staff noticed that a number of them had rigged a Playstation unit into a tattoo gun. Baton Rouge's Recovery School District is gradually shrinking. Six years ago the district had nine schools with nearly 3,000 students, but by this time next year it will be down to four schools and 1,100 students. Capitol High is set to return to local control after being operated by the state. In 2004, state leaders began taking over low-performing schools and placing them in the RSD. The goal was to develop new successful schools. It exploded after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, then shifted its focus to Baton Rouge beginning in 2008. It's game week for LSU and Southern. The Tigers play Florida State on Sunday in the Superdome, and Southern hosts Florida Memorial on Saturday. The next week, the teams play at Tiger Stadium for the first time ever. |
