Rise of Teen Online Suicide Videos: Signs to Look for and How to Help
A deadly new trend has emerged among youngsters who are airing the last moments of their lives online in social media suicide videos. These videos have started to plague YouTube and Facebook Live, where suicides have been broadcast across the internet in real time.
Data shows that suicide rates have risen among adolescents, and children as young as 12 have streamed themselves online as they take their own lives. One of the prominent factors identified as contributing to this suicide spike is cyber-bullying through social media, which can leave youngsters experiencing isolation, anxiety, and depression. Experts have also revealed that there is a lack of resources available for the growing population of people with mental health conditions that can lead to suicide.
Signs to Look Out For
Indicators of suicidal urges to watch for include a person being withdrawn, not caring about their appearance, experiencing calmness after a major depressive episode, or suddenly visiting all family members.
The act of talking and listening to a youngster can go a long way. However, if you suspect someone may commit suicide, you should contact law enforcement, a mental health worker, or a suicide hotline.
