Government Shutdown Hits Recalled Vehicle Inspections |
|
Opinions are divided over the ongoing Government shutdown, but one aspect is not in question – it has sparked serious safety concerns after halting investigations into potentially-dangerous vehicles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is just one of the government agencies which has been impacted by the shutdown. Among other jobs, the agency is responsible for investigating defects in cars, trucks, and SUVs across the United States. However, it has been announced that NHTSA will not be performing several key tasks during the shutdown – including defective vehicle tests.
Safety Fears
Safety campaigners fear that this could delay vital investigative work into vehicle issues and failures. Federal law requires that all automakers issue appropriate recalls when they become aware of a defect. However, automakers are extremely reluctant to do so, and NHTSA often has to step in to force a recall.
As of December, the NHTSA had 13 active defect investigations, including Ford Explorer carbon monoxide leaks, and steering column separations in Toyota Highlanders. A delay in recall investigations could be extremely dangerous for road-users. Read our full blog post. |

Did You Know...? Comparative Negligence is the Key to Dual-Fault Accident Compensation
Comparative negligence allows accident victims to seek compensation – even if they are partly to blame for the accident.
This is a point of law that plays a huge role in many cases which involve dual fault. It is used to assign a percentage of blame to everyone involved in an incident, such as a car crash, using this to dilute compensation payouts.
Read Bisnar Chase’s comprehensive guide to comparative negligence for everything you need to know about this complicated-sounding rule of law. It includes handy graphics and real-life examples, making it easy to understand comparative negligence – and how it could affect you. |

San Diego Sued Over Controversial Electric Scooters
A lawsuit has been launched over the use of controversial electric scooters in San Diego. A disability rights group has sued the city of San Diego, as well as three electric scooter companies, for violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.
According to news reports, Bird, Lime and Razor are named in the class action suit, which alleges that the companies and the city have failed to keep the sidewalks clear from an onslaught of unregulated and dockless scooters.
Plaintiffs in the lawsuit say that they have struggled due to the scooters being left to block the sidewalk, as well as scooter users speeding across the sidewalk. While laws are in place preventing their use on sidewalks, the lawsuit says that they are not enforced. Click here for more information on this lawsuit.
This is far from the first instance of electric scooter problems in California. Both scooter riders and pedestrians say that they have sustained severe injuries in collisions, including broken bones, torn ligaments, lacerations and damaged teeth.
If you have been involved in an electric scooter incident, an experienced California personal injury lawyer can help you better understand your legal rights and options. |
