Minnesotans clocked more than 130 million hours of volunteering in 2018. But volunteers are changing. Older Minnesotans are aging out — they were the heavy hitters who volunteered every week for hours at the same organization. And millennials are different. They want one-time projects they can do in a few hours with their families and colleagues. On today’s show I spoke with two guests about how nonprofit organizations are adapting to this new reality and why Minnesota is such a volunteer hotbed. ~ Angela Davis, MPR News host | Forecast | Updraft

Workers press Minneapolis for wage theft protection
A coalition of workers' rights advocates gathered Friday at Minneapolis City Hall to support a so-called wage theft prevention ordinance that would target employers who underpay or refuse to pay workers what they've earned.

Ramsey County to open shelter space to deal with light rail overnight closure
Somewhere between 150 and 200 people regularly use the light rail as a homeless shelter. In August, the Green Line will stop running between 2 and 4 a.m., and Ramsey County is going to offer more beds by opening an emergency winter shelter months earlier in August.
