View in browser | hyperallergic.comAugust 3, 2020Letter from the editor: Today we're starting a new phase of the Hyperallergic newsletter. Each edition will include a short letter from myself, or one of our other editors, that will highlight, focus, or comment on various articles, opinions, and thoughts appearing on the site or bubbling around the internet. On Friday, we began publishing the first in a new four-part series about artists and art movements in Los Angeles, made possible by a grant from the Sam Francis Foundation. The first essay in this series is by Matt Stromberg, who profiled three art spaces in South Los Angeles and how they've become a force for community empowerment, carrying a tradition dating back at least 50 years to the Black Arts Movement. Throughout this week we will continue publishing articles in the series, starting today with an essay by Rosa Boshier, who writes about the queer Latinx punk scene in 1970s and '80s Los Angeles and its longlasting legacy. On Tuesday, Caroline Liou will reflect on how certain monuments and cultural landmarks in the San Gabriel Valley have represented the Asian American community in a region that is home to the largest concentration of Asian Americans in the United States. And, finally, Jennifer Remenchik will profile four Los Angeles artists who have turned to their art for spiritual sustenance, particularly during COVID-19. Enjoy, and a special thanks to Elisa Wouk Almino, our LA Senior Editor, for spearheading this initiative.
