Hello all— Well, I’m on the road again, writing to you from the boarding area at Reagan National (DCA, one of my favorite airports) as I’m headed to Mexico City and then on to the Sea of Cortés for some sailing. While in Mexico City, I’ll be checking out the new hotel Casa Polanco. A former mansion in one of the city’s poshest neighborhoods, it’s already gotten quite a bit of buzz and so I’m excited to see it. You may recall I was recently in Paris, invited by the world’s sole business class-only airline, La Compagnie, to experience their collaborations with star chefs. As cool as that sounded, I felt like there was a larger story to be told about Paris and its delicate balance between being on the cutting edge of lifestyle trends while maintaining historic traditions. Serendipitously, the oft-overlooked Musée de Cluny, “that dusty, always overlooked repository of medieval curiosities,” had just undergone a major renovation turning it into one of the city’s premier museums. I think you’ll enjoy reading all about it, at the very least for the Ring Lardner references! While I won’t have time this visit, most tourists in Mexico City make their way to the home and studio of Frida Kahlo. In an excerpt from his fascinating new book, See What You’re Missing: New Ways of Looking at the World Through Art, former Tate Galleries director Will Gompertz gives us the juicy backstory to what he calls “the ultimate break-up picture”–Kahlo’s Las Dos Fridas. Enjoy! — William O’Connor, Travel Editor |

“If you want the best view without any crowds, one where you can stare out a giant window overlooking central Tokyo from your private room or from an open-air lobby terrace, the newly opened Tokyo Edition Toranomon—which hosted The Daily Beast earlier this month—is where it’s at.” |

When you think of inspiring depictions of extreme travel, it’s usually documentaries or adrenaline-pumping YouTube videos filmed on a GoPro. It’s rarely a book. But our latest selection for Just Booked, our series on exciting new coffee table books, is just that–an inspiring book on extreme travel. Remote Experiences: Extraordinary Travel Adventures From North to South is its title and it was put together for the publisher Taschen by photographer Daniel De Vleeschauwer. |
It’s a book perhaps best given for that jaded traveler friend of yours, the one who thinks they’ve seen it all. De Vleeschauwer’s photos take readers on some mind-boggling journeys. There’s the road trip from Hamburg to the northern tip of Europe and back, crossing through nine countries often on icy and lonely roads. Or you can follow along with a gaucho guide and traverse the otherworldly terrain of Patagonia. The one that grabbed our attention? Following in the footsteps of Genghis Khan and joining the golden eagle hunt in a remote area of Mongolia. Don’t miss our other selections for our series on gorgeous travel-related coffee table books, Just Booked. |
