If Sunday’s game marked the start of the Jameis Winston era in New Orleans, the Saints couldn’t have provided a better performance for his debut as the starting quarterback. It was a thorough drubbing in every phase of the game as the Saints trampled the Green Bay Packers 38-3 in what counted as a home game for the Saints in Jacksonville, Florida. The game was moved to Florida in the wake of Hurricane Ida, and the Saints left the stadium with plenty of confidence after dismantling one of the NFL’s proudest franchises. For those fans who remember the 27-10 loss to the New York Giants in the Saints’ “home opener” at Giants Stadium in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina, Sunday’s outcome had to be especially satisfying. The Saints’ offense proved very efficient despite taking the field without receivers Michael Thomas and Tre’Quan Smith. Winston threw five touchdowns - two to Juwan Johnson and one each to Deonte Harris, Chris Hogan and Alvin Kamara. Interceptions plagued Winston’s career in Tampa Bay, but he didn’t commit a single one on Sunday. He benefited from what appeared to be an errant roughing the passer call that wiped out what would have been an interception in the second half. There wasn’t much that went wrong for the Saints on Sunday, and New Orleans is sure to be buzzing about their beloved NFL franchise headed into the Week 2 game at Carolina. There has to be a little concern about Marshon Lattimore, who is reportedly set to get a big pay day, after he suffered an apparent injury to his right thumb. As for the Green Bay fans who put down a pretty penny for the last minute flight to Jacksonville, they have to be sick to see what happened to QB Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the squad. Before being yanked in the fourth quarter, Rodgers was 15-of-28 for 133 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns. Saints fans, enjoy your bragging rights at work on Monday. |
