Family of 8 displaced in Central Peoria house fire A fire that started in the kitchen of a Central Peoria home Tuesday night displaced a family of eight, according to the Peoria Fire Department. All of the family members got out safely before firefighters arrived in the 2100 block of West Sunnyview Drive, but the American Red Cross was called to help them find other places to stay. The call came in about 7:15 p.m. Firefighters say they saw light smoke coming from the front of the home, and a fire in the kitchen. The fire investigator determined the fire was accidental, according to a news release. No one was hurt. Damage is estimated at $50,000. WEEK-TV NBC 25 PEORIA Champaign County Fire investigator stresses fire safety after close escape VIDEO: One Champaign County fire official is stressing the importance of fire safety after a woman barely escaped a fire that destroyed her home last week. The fire happened Thursday morning just outside of Urbana on High Cross Road between Curtis and Windsor Roads. Michael Dilley, a fire investigator with the Champaign County Sheriff's Investigative Fire Team, said it is believed that the fire was caused by a hot tub. The hot tub was in the ground floor garage and the fire spread to an apartment above. Although no one was hurt, there was no working smoke detector. This is another reason why Dilley urged people to make sure their home smoke detectors are working. "In 40 years of doing this, I have never been at fatality fire where there was a working smoke detector," Dilley said. WCIA-TV CBS 3 CHAMPAIGN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Fire crews take down huge blaze at Texas recycling plant VIDEOS/PHOTOS: The fire at a recycling plant in Montana Vista in far East El Paso was brought under control on Tuesday, Sept. 19, and county crews continued suppression efforts into the night. At about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, multiple agencies, eventually reaching five, responded to reports of a huge fire at the facility at Buffalo Bill and Krag St. Smoke and flames could be seen for miles. The recycling plant contains junk cars, trash, pallets and other items that fueled the fire, Duenas said. El Paso and Horizon fire departments initially responded to the fire. They were joined by Socorro, Montana Vista and Ysleta del Sur Pueblo fire departments. About 60 firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the site of the facility and kept it from becoming a threat to the neighboring community, Duenas told KTSM at about 5 p.m. KTSM-TV NBC 9 EL PASO Prince William visits FDNY firefighters near ground zero during New York City visit Britain's Prince William visited FDNY firefighters at the firehouse near ground zero during his trip to New York City on Tuesday. William spoke with firefighters at Ten House in Lower Manhattan, the closest firehouse to the World Trade Center, which lost several firefighters in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, according to the FDNY. "Speaking from his own experience as a first responder, Prince William talked to FDNY members about the importance of mental health and counseling," the FDNY shared on social media. William also met with Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh and Chief of Department John Hodgens, who showed the prince around the firehouse as well as their 9/11 memorial inside. Last week, New York City marked 22 years since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. WPIX-TV CW 11 NEW YORK Rhode Island's Block Island could have been 'the next Lahaina' during hotel fire - Here's how downtown was saved PHOTOS: There was a persistent beeping. Renee Reed assumed it was a cellphone. She and her husband, Chris, were settled in for the night in Room 218 of the Harborside Inn, just above the hotel's kitchen. They had a friend's wedding at the Spring House the next day. Then, an alarm sounded. She flicked on the lights. Smoke was filling the room. "Get up," she told her husband. "There's a fire." It was just before 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 18, and fire was rapidly spreading unseen through the Harborside Inn. Kristen Hutton, returning home from dinner with friends who serve on the island's all-volunteer fire department, saw one call: the Harborside Inn was on fire. At first, she wasn't concerned — surely the firefighters would put out the blaze before it spread to the Mad Hatter, her store on the ground level. "It's bigger than you think," her friend told her. "You should come down here." THE PROVIDENCE JOURNAL - METERED SITE New FEMA map shows California has most high risk areas in nation VIDEO: The Bay Area has seen more than its share of natural disasters in the past few years, from deadly wildfires to widespread flooding. To help identify the areas at highest risk, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was directed to create a map showing the risk level by community. California has the most high risk areas in the nation. A closer look into the Bay Area reveals "yellow" areas, which are relatively moderate risk. "Orange" areas indicate relatively high risk and "red" on the map shows areas of very high risk. The risks include the possibility of wildfire, earthquake, and flooding, and the amount of damage that could be done. "Teal" colors on the map indicate community disaster resilience zones, which are in the top 1% in the state, and identified as a disadvantaged community. KNTV NBC 11 SAN JOSE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
