ILLINOIS DAILY HERALD 12-year-old honored by Herrin Fire Department for heroic act A Herrin 12-year-old was honored Monday evening at the Herrin City Council meeting for a heroic act derived from skills he learned as a third grader. Herrin Fire Chief Shawn Priddy presented Jacobie Stubbs with a certificate recognizing his quick thinking and response to a fire in Stubbs' home. On Oct. 20, the Herrin Fire Department responded to an oven fire that was getting out of control When the crews arrived, they found the fire had been extinguished and contained to the oven by Stubbs, who told firefighters he learned to use an extinguisher in the third grade when he took part in the S.A.F.E. program. Priddy said his department has taught the "Students and Firefighters in Education" program for well over 20 years. "We hear something every once in a while," he said, referring to kids who have used the skills they learned in the program. MARION DAILY REPUBLICAN Eureka College students get fired up over hands-on arson investigation It took just two minutes for the mock-up of a dorm room to go from a few flickers of flame to a roaring fire with smoke billowing from the 8-foot structure in a parking lot at Eureka College on Tuesday. Just as quickly, firefighters from the Eureka-Goodfield Fire Protection District put the fire out. More schools added to Eureka College's tuition-free promise program Now the real work began. The fire was set so students in criminal justice professor William Lally's crime scene management class get hands-on experience in arson investigation. "The lecture is one thing but the individuals actually will not discover what challenges may be a part of this until they're actually physically doing it," said Lally. "So the only way that you can do that is to have a structure that is of somewhat comparable size to say a typical dorm room and set it on fire." BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL PANTAGRAPH 70-Year-Old Veteran Battling Cancer Hailed as an ‘Angel' After He Charged into Burning Salem Home to Save Neighbors VIDEO: A 70-year-old Air Force veteran from Salem, Illinois is being hailed as a hero after he saved his neighbors from a house fire this week. Marshall Helm had been walking his granddaughter to the bus stop early in the morning when the bus driver drew his attention to the smoke and flames emanating from the house next door. Helm ran over to the endangered home and threw open the garage door only to find flames climbing up one of the building walls. Despite how the Vietnam veteran has been battling cancer, he did not hesitate to charge past the flames and into the house so he could make sure his neighbors were safe. Gary and Kathy Benjamin had been sleeping upstairs when they awoke to hear Helm shouting about the fire. GOOD NEWS NETWORK PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

WMBF-TV NBC NEWS MYRTLE BEACH Real-Time Overdose Tracking Helps Show COVID-19's Effects COVID-19 may dominate the headlines. But another epidemic that was already raging before it arrived has flared up in recent months, too, according to new University of Michigan data. A real-time tracking system that launched in 2019 shows a 15% rise in suspected opioid overdose deaths across most of Michigan since March, compared with the same time last year, and a 29% rise in first responders' use of a rescue drug called naloxone that can reverse an opioid overdose if given in time. The deaths started rising soon after the pandemic arrived in Michigan, while naloxone use dipped before rising to new heights later in the spring and summer. The system, run by the University of Michigan Injury Prevention Center and created in partnership with the Michigan HIDTA, a federal program that tracks drug trafficking, gathers data from EMS agencies and medical examiners across most of Michigan. MICHIGAN HEALTH LAB Florida firefighters win first place in Firefighter Combat Challenge world championship A group of St. Lucie County firefighters are world champions after winning first place in the team category of the 2020 Firefighter Combat Challenge held over the weekend in Texas. Brian Riebe, Kevin Reilly, Caden Wilson, Matt Coney and Dante Hill of the St. Lucie County Fire District had the best averaged completion time of the course dubbed as the "toughest two minutes in sports" by ESPN. "It's unbelievable, just pure elation that we accomplished a goal that we set out to do earlier this year," said Coney, a SWAT paramedic driver engineer with the fire district. The Firefighter Combat Challenge course is divided into five events that participants — either individually, in a tandem or on a relay team — must finish as quickly as possible wearing full bunker gear and an air pack, weighing a total of about 50 pounds. TC PALM Minnesota State Fire Marshal report: Sprinklers could've saved 5 people killed in 2019 high-rise fire A new report from Minnesota's State Fire Marshal Division says fire sprinklers could've saved the lives of those killed in a November 2019 high-rise fire in Minneapolis. "It's a bold statement, but it's a very accurate statement," said State Fire Marshal Jim Smith. "We know through our experiences that sprinkler systems put fires out." On Tuesday, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety State Fire Marshal Division (DPS-SFMD) released the report, which details findings and recommendations from the fire. After-action reports are completed after every multiple-fatality or high dollar-loss fire to help identify factors that led to deaths and injuries and determine how to prevent such tragedies in the future. "This tragic loss of life could have been prevented. The victims would still be alive had there been sprinklers throughout that entire building," Smith said. "We owe it to the victims and their families to learn from this fire so we can prevent similar tragedies." KSTP-TV ABC 5 MINNEAPOLIS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
