Police and firefighter/paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 8:23 p.m. Tuesday, October 20 , 2020 to a report of a house fire in the block of 2300 South Cedar Glen Drive. Firefighters on scene reported smoke showing from the roof, while neighbors reported flames showing from the back roof. Firefighters attacked the fire with two hand lines, reporting an attic fire. The interior firefighters discovered an attic filed with fire, just beginning to burn a hole through the roof at the back of the house. Tower 1's crew raised the main aerial ladder to the roof while an interior crew extinguished the fire in the attic. The fire was extinguished by about 8:45 p.m. Firefighters from Tower 1 cut a hole in the roof and soaked the very top of the roof to further extinguish the fire on the outside. Firefighters were working on wash-down by about 9:00 p.m. Initially no injuries were reported, and some out-of-town crews started returning by about 9:10 p.m.
THE CARDINAL
No one was injured as Galesburg firefighters responded to two structure fires Tuesday morning. However, a dog was rescued. Twelve firefighters from all three stations reported at 2:35 a.m. to a duplex on fire at 839 Mulberry St. They found fire was showing from a front bedroom window and all occupants were out of the building. Battalion Chief David Farrell assumed command and the Brooks Street Station fire crew pulled an attack line and quickly got the fire under control. The Fremont Street Station fire crew did find and rescue a dog during search efforts. Fire damage was contained to the bedroom and there was smoke damage throughout the structure. The cause of the fire was incendiary and is under investigation by Galesburg Fire Department investigators and Galesburg Police Department detectives.

The Effingham County Fire Department responded to three fire calls Monday – two in the city and one near Dieterich. There were no injuries. At 8:57 a.m., firefighters were called to the scene of a activated fire alarm at the main Petro building that includes the restaurant and convenience store on West Fayette Avenue. Effingham Fire Department Chief Bob Tutko said a problem with one of Ameren's electric distribution systems caused a motor on top of the main Petro building to malfunction. "It basically fried the motor, sending smoke through the ventilation system of the truck stop, triggering the alarm," Tutko said. Tutko said firefighters had to get up in the ceiling since the motor had melted to make sure there was no fire extension. "We used a mechanical fan to disburse the smoke from the facility," Tutko said.

VIDEO: A Hialeah firefighter has recalled the night he flew over a barrier and off the Palmetto Expressway after, investigators said, he was hit by another driver, causing his truck to come to rest on its roof along the street below. Alain Pineiro is at home recovering from a fractured neck and rib, but it will take him longer to recover from the emotional pain of the crash. "I remember hitting the wall and thinking, ‘Finally, I'm gonna stop,' and that never happened," Pineiro said. Instead, he would be airborne in his personal truck after, police believe, it was hit or clipped by another driver on the Palmetto Expressway near the Northwest 122nd Street exit on Oct. 12. The fall was captured on surveillance video. The 34-year-old firefighter's vehicle landed on its top below the Palmetto on West 20th Avenue.

The daughter of Clayton's first fire marshal on Tuesday retrieved her father's retirement badge after losing it in Florida. Jill Halsey, 75, of St. Charles, lost the badge at a Florida restaurant years ago — when, exactly, is unclear. But now, thanks to the diligence of Clayton fire Chief John Paul Jones, as well as the Florida man who found the badge, Halsey again has a piece of family history. "It's like a piece of him is back with me," Halsey said of her father, Roy Weckherlin. "The fire department was everything to him." Ray Wright, 66, of St. Petersburg, Florida, found the badge in 2016. He initially turned it in to the restaurant's lost and found, but curiosity led him to take a picture of the badge and conduct his own research. He discovered the badge was from Missouri, so he contacted the Clayton Fire Department.

VIDEO: A Davis police officer recalled the tense moments before rescuing a woman from a burning car. It looks like a scene out of a Hollywood movie as Davis Police Cpl. Pheng Ly's body camera shows him pulling a helpless woman out of her burning car and into safety. But the scene happened in real life Saturday night in the middle of Ly's shift. "I heard on the scanner through the CHP channel that there was an overturned vehicle, which was on fire," Ly told FOX40. The accident happened on Interstate 80 near Highway 113. Ly said the closest California Highway Patrol officer was at least 30 minutes away at the jail in Fairfield. Ly was just a couple of minutes away, so he hurried to the scene. Shown through Ly's body camera video, he reaches in and grabs the woman by both of her wrists and then pulls.

US COVID-19 cases will begin to rapidly accelerate in about a week, a leading health expert says, as the country's daily averages keep climbing toward the summer's peak and several states are setting hospitalization records. The US recorded more than 60,300 new cases Tuesday, and the national seven-day case average hit about 59,500 -- an increase of about 73% in five and a half weeks, Johns Hopkins University data show. That's the highest average since August 3. And things will likely get worse, experts warn. "It's going to be a difficult fall and winter," Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration, told CNBC on Monday evening. "I think we're about two or three weeks behind Europe -- so we're about a week away from starting to enter a period where we're going to see a rapid acceleration in cases."

Firefighters in Dearborn, Mich, destroyed a $90,000 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 last week, but they had a good reason. The department, which is located in the same town as Ford's headquarters, was using the pre-production muscle car donated by the automaker to hone the vehicle extraction skills needed to rescue victims from wrecked vehicles. They said it "almost broke our hearts" to rip apart the red coupe, which ended up with its roof pillars sawed through, hood torn open and its driver's door pulled off. During early stages of launching a new model, automakers manufacture several vehicles that aren't certified for sale and often end up being used for educational purposes rather than going straight to the crusher.
