Computer Problems Lead To Cancellation Of Chicago Firefighter Promotional Exams Some Chicago Fire Department promotional exams have been canceled this week due to computer problems with the third-party vendor that administers the test. The gaffe could cost Chicago taxpayers big bucks. The Fire Department confirmed Tuesday night that there were major problems with the Fire Department lieutenant and battalion chief tests. On Monday and Tuesday, technical problems with computers caused long delays. Battalion chief tests scheduled for Wednesday have been canceled by the vendor, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. Langford said the city is proactively working with the vendor – which the city has been using for years – to address the issues. Firefighters scheduled to take the battalion chief test on Wednesday were notified Tuesday night that the test is canceled. CBS CHICAGO Lake of Egypt Fire District donates fire truck to Southeastern Illinois College's Fire Science Program Southeastern Illinois College's Fire Science Program has a new fire engine, thanks to Lake of Egypt Fire District. The ladder truck is a 1996 HME Luverne originally obtained from Springfield by Lake of Egypt Fire District about 10 years ago. Assistant Fire Chief Frank Huffstutler said the board decided to cut down their fleet, and rather than trying to sell it, they found it more worthwhile to donate the truck. "We knew the college could use it for training, and we want to be a part of that future fire training," Huffstutler said. This is the second time Lake of Egypt Fire District has donated a fire engine to SIC to help with training. This truck, which is likely worth more than $25,000, will be used in SIC's fire brigade training, fire science classes, and coal mine training events. HARRISBURG DAILY REGISTER Edwardsville Fire Department responds to mutual aid A third party caller alerted the Wood River Fire Department Tuesday around 4:05 p.m. about a possible trailer fire in the 70 block of Carroll Wood Drive in Wood River. According to authorities, fire and smoke were seen coming out of the home as firefighters arrived on scene. The fire was determined to be moderate and primarily coming from the living room of the home. Wood River then requested mutual aid resulting in units from Edwardsville, East Alton and Roxana responding. All four residents were not home when the fire occurred, no injuries were reported. The scene is still under investigation but preliminary reports link the fire to possible faulty electrical wiring or outlet connections. EDWARDSVILLE INTELLIGENCER 'No loss of life': Sprinklers saved animals from Chicago pet store fire Officials in Orland Park believe a sprinkler system helped save a group of critters from a fire that broke out at a pet store Monday in the southwest suburb. Crews responded about 8:15 p.m. to reports of a fire at Chicago Fish and Coral Company, 14412 John Humphrey Drive, according to Ray Hanania, spokesman for the Orland Fire Protection District. The sprinkler system was activated soon after the blaze broke out, and firefighters extinguished the small fire when they arrived, Hanania said. Smoke was removed from inside the store with the help of additional crews. The store's owner, Brian Potter, said he was initially worried the fire would cause "total devastation." However, the animals were all safe and in good condition. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Prairie Ridge HS Student Saves Man's Life Thanks To CPR Training Staff at Prairie Ridge High School are praising a student who they said recently saved a man's life. According to a post on the school's Facebook page, Calista Pollack, a junior at PRHS, relied on her CPR training from her health class during the recent incident. Pollack's training came in handy when she recently dropped her brother off for his Eagle Scout project, and a man at the location was in need of medical attention, according to the school. According to the school, 911 was called, and the dispatcher told Pollack to begin compressions and start counting. "I did compressions for about three minutes until the paramedics came," Pollack said, according to the school, who added she was able to keep the man in stable condition until paramedics got there. The school also said Pollack recently heard the man is recovering and doing well. CRYSTAL LAKE PATCH.COM PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

ALL THINGS FIRSTNET City fire station in Pennsylvania to be out of service for 60 days, fire chief says The Sunbury Steam Fire Engine Co. Number 1 is facing a 60-day shutdown because the firefighters need more training, city Fire Chief Brad Wertz said. Wertz told City Council that he decided to pull the company, located at Center and Penn St., out of service because he discovered that six of the eight volunteer firefighters were not properly trained. Wertz said the department is working on getting the proper training and he is personally helping get them back in service. "I decided it was a liability at this time to keep the department running," he said. "For now it is just safer for everyone until they receive the proper training." Wertz said the company would show up at scenes but he would have to send them away because they were not allowed to perform certain tasks. "I appreciate the people that want to help and become volunteers but we just need to get everyone trained properly." Wertz said no one at any scene was in any danger of being hurt. THE DAILY ITEM Fire chiefs in Florida seeking help in drones bills As legislation continues to move swiftly through the Florida Legislature to allow increased governmental use of drones, Florida's fire chiefs are seeking to get on board. On Tuesday the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee took up, and swiftly approved, HB 659, which would allow use of drones by Florida wildlife and forestry officials for two purposes: to monitor invasive species encroachment on public lands, and to help manage and fight wildfires. The latter purpose came by way of an amendment introduced and tacked on Tuesday. The provision is identical to one added to the Senate counterpart of the bill in a Senate committee hearing on Monday. At both stops, the Florida Fire Chiefs' Association spoke up with an "us too" request, citing the same rationales for drones' use in structure fires that had been cited for the wildfires amendment: that the aerial camera devices could help firefighters understand what is going on with the fires, and that the drones could help improve safety for firefighters at the scene. FLORIDAPOLITICS.COM Alabama volunteer fire department struggles to keep trucks running Chris Owens turned the key but the engine in the fire truck would not start. It wasn't the first time. The Town Creek Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department's equipment has fallen into disrepair as the department faces significant financial challenges. "We'll jump that truck first," said Owens looking at the pumper truck which still bore the Sipsey name from it's former home. "Then we'll use that truck to jump this one and then we'll be out of here...time is of the essence" Jumping the trucks can often take 10 minutes, longer than it can take a mobile home to be destroyed in a fire. On Saturday, the department resorted to asking for donations to pay for new truck batteries. Owens said they have requested $35 in fire dues last year from the more than 500 residents which they serve. Only 25 voluntarily paid according to the chief. WBMA-TV ABC 33/40 BIRMINGHAM Texas firefighters introduce collectible trading cards for area youth VIDEO: Remember the good ‘ol days when kids collected and traded baseball cards? A few folks at the Amarillo Fire Department remember those days too. But they're version of trading cards features their fire engines and trucks. These cards are helping highlight our local heroes and connecting them with our local kids. Amarillo Fire Department Community Liaison Jeff Justus says, "So I used to ride a fire truck with one of the retirees, and he always carried around Fire Department fire truck trading cards, they weren't our trucks, but they were just generic, borrow trading cards to give the kids and I always thought it'd be cool if we had some for our fire trucks." Actually, Jeff Justus thought the trading cards were a really cool idea. So when he started handling community relations for the Amarillo Fire Department he brought the idea to life.
