Springfield will make extra payment to police, fire pension funds The City of Springfield is going to make an extra payment to their growing fire and police pension funds, but this is only going to make a small dent in the overall pension costs. During the Springfield City Council meeting on Tuesday. Feb. 16, the aldermen voted in favor of making a $589,323 payment to the police and fire pension funds. The reason they can make this move is because their corporate fund balance was over 20% after closing the books on Fiscal Year 2020 last August, but Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder said this is small. Pension payments are up by $2 million for fiscal year 2022, which starts on March 1. "Even though it seems significant, it kind of dwarfs when we are getting a $2 million increase this year," Langfelder said. "That just shows you the magnitude, but it is heading in the right direction. Baby steps." The corporate fund takes tax dollars and pays for city services like police, fire, and public works. FOX ILLINOIS Chicago firefighter among 3 hurt in Kenwood high-rise fire A fire in a Kenwood high-rise building early Wednesday morning left two people and a firefighter injured, Chicago fire officials said. The fire broke out on the 22-story building's second floor about 4:15 a.m. in the 4800-block of South Lake Park Avenue. Two women, ages 84 and 64, were transported to University of Chicago Medical Center for smoke inhalation, fire officials said. They were in good condition. A firefighter was also transported there for minor injuries. Ten people also refused to be transported, officials said. Chicago fire officials had finished conducting a search of the Harper Square Cooperative high-rise building by about 5:30 a.m. to make sure everyone had made it out safely, and the fire had been extinguished. Some residents were forced out into the cold, and Chicago firefighters were working in bitterly cold temperatures. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Chicago Fire Department Hosts Graduation Ceremony For New Firefighters VIDEO: Two feet of snow can't stop the Chicago Fire Department. Graduation ceremonies were held as planned Tuesday morning, at the Quinn Fire Academy. Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Fire Commissioner Richard Ford II welcomed the new firefighters into the ranks, and thanked them for their commitment to serving the people of Chicago. "For many of you, that work starts tomorrow," Lightfoot said. "As you answer calls from residents who are sick or frightened and in dire need of your help, and I would be remiss if I didn't say, you are starting your job when we are recovering from one of the most historic snowstorms that we've seen in quite a time. So the needs will be many." Tuesday's Chicago Fire Academy graduates began their training back in July of last year. Due to COVID-19 social distancing, their families had to watch the ceremony online. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Cedar Lake ambulance call ends with medics assisting in home birth: ‘That kid was ready to come into the world' A rough night in Cedar Lake punctuated by several serious medical calls and a head-on collision due to the weather ended on a high note for the town's first responders, Fire Chief Todd Wilkening said. The last call of the shift came in at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday regarding a woman in labor. Police were first on the scene and medics wound up delivering the baby in the woman's home. "It took us a while to get there because of the snow. The whole area was really deep in snow," Wilkening said. "She basically was going to have that baby in the snowstorm." Wilkening said after such a rough night for first responders, being able to end with a positive outcome bringing a child into the world meant a lot. "That kid was ready to come into the world. It was a pretty bad night to do it," Wilkening said. He said the medics did a great job with the delivery after a long and trying shift. CHICAGO TRIBUNE - METERED SITE Follow Up: Charges Filed in Galesburg Fatal House Fire Police arrested a man who investigators said intentionally set a house fire that killed a woman on Sunday, February 14. Donald Denniston, 38, is charged with First Degree Murder and Aggravated Arson. The fire department found Katrina Hainline, 60, dead inside the home at 261 Pine Street. Another person, Boyd Black, 50, escaped from the house. Black suffered burns and was taken to the hospital. The city said the house "had been placarded as unfit for habitation." The fire and police departments were called to the house at 12:45 a.m. Sunday. The house was engulfed in flames when they arrived on the scene and adjacent homes were evacuated. WIUM-FM TRI STATES PUBLIC RADIO Highland volunteer fire department uses brutal cold as training opportunity The Highland Fire Department used one of the worst weather nights of the year to conduct ice and cold-water rescue training. Temperatures sunk into the low single digits Tuesday night as firefighters lined up near a frozen pond outside the city's community center. "These are the conditions we'll be working in, so this is what we're going to drill in," said Highland Fire Chief Brian Wilson. The training is an annual event. Lt. Dan Tallman was one of the firefighters dressed in a thermal protective suit as he entered the water so others could train on rescue techniques. "Everything that you can train for on the worst-case scenario, we're prepared for," Tallman said. Highland is a volunteer fire department. "This is a testament to their dedication to the citizens of the community," said Wilson. The fire chief said training in difficult conditions could someday lead to a life being saved. Wilson credits the department's members for their dedication. KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Large Texas Townhome Fire Displaces Residents During Cold Weather VIDEO: Firefighters battled a large fire in Duncanville that could be seen from Texas Sky Ranger. The fire engulfed five townhomes at 1408 Crosspointe in Duncanville near Clark and Wheatland Road. Michelle Monterro's home was destroyed by the fire. She said her neighbors had work crews in the home doing some sort of repair work when the fire broke out. Monterro lost her home of just six months and said she didn't know where she and her family would sleep, as there were no hotels available for miles due to power outages. Other neighbors claimed to have seen people running from the home after the fire sparked, but police would not confirm anything about the claims of work crews or people leaving the scene. The Duncanville Fire Department, along with Grand Prairie, Lancaster and Midlothian fire departments, worked to contain the fire as it continued to spread to other residences. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Bill will increase safety for FDNY on film sets across New York City after firefighter killed in 2018 An agreement was reached Tuesday to protect firefighters with more safety on film sets throughout New York City Eileen Davidson, the widow of a firefighter killed on a movie set in 2018, has pushed hard for the safety crackdown. Michael Davidson, 37, was killed on the set of "Motherless Brooklyn" on March 23, 2018 in Harlem. When he and Engine Company 69 were called to the fire, they had no idea the building was not as it appeared. False walls had been erected and flammable materials were brought on site. Davidson became separated from his team and ran out of air. The pending legislation will protect future film locations and will require a fire safety director to be on set all the time, so if the layout is changed, responding firefighters will know before they go charging in. Davidson and members of the FDNY were concerned that amendments proposed to the bill by the film industry would strip critical safety elements from it. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK Assistant Kentucky Fire Chief Said Near Loss of Two Colleagues Is Scariest Experience in 19-Year Career Glasgow Assistant Fire Chief Adam Maulden said in his 19-years of service, he has never been as scared as he was Monday at a massive fire when that nearly killed his colleague. At around 4:30 p.m., the Glasgow Fire Department responded to a fire at Hughes HVAC Supply on West Main Street. The building is a complete loss. While fighting the fire, a wall collapsed, nearly hitting and trapping three firefighters. One of those firefighters, Maulden, said when the wall collapsed, he was surrounded by black smoke and couldn't see his men. "My first instinct was to grab for the firefighters. I found one instantly. I couldn't find the other one. It's kind of like you instantly get sick because you know where he was at, you know what happened and you don't know where he's at at that point. "You don't know if he is in the collapse, where he has went. Instant misery of not being able to count because, you know, I felt accountable for them," said Maulden. WNKY-TV NBC/CBS 40 BOWLING GREEN Pennsylvania fire company turns bakery for annual Fat Tuesday doughnut fundraiser The Coal Township Rescue Squad's fire station was temporarily turned into a bakery as members continued a longtime tradition of making doughnuts for Fat Tuesday. "The amount of years I've been here and the last couple of years, this is the most I've seen us make," Kayla Hoffman said. The volunteer firefighters started cooking thousands of doughnuts at midnight and have been here all day. "Cinnamon sugar, granulated sugar, powdered sugar, glazed, plain and sprinkled," Hoffman said. People lined up for a dozen or more. "Oh, they're excellent, yeah, they're really good," Richard Foulds said. Perhaps the best part is all proceeds from the doughnut sale go right back to the Coal Township Rescue Squad. "Building costs, maintenance for the vehicles, if we need equipment, anything that we need, bills, anything that we need," Hoffman said. Firefighters here say this is their biggest fundraiser of the year and typically brings in more than $5,000. WNEP-TV ABC 16 SCRANTON Family of 29-year-old firefighter who died of COVID asks North Carolina community to take virus seriously A 29-year-old firefighter who worked for departments in Iredell and Rowan Counties died from COVID-19 last week. Now his family at home and in the fire service have a message they want the community to hear. They spoke very candidly about taking COVID seriously. They say their hope is that their experience will save another family from having to go through the pain they have endured for the last five weeks. "When I found out I was positive, I texted him and told him, he said it's okay mom, don't worry about it," said mother Cindy Bregoli. "He said I'm going to be okay mom, don't worry about it." For as long as anyone can remember, Andrew Bley was all about the fire service. "He grew up around the fire service," said Bley's stepfather David Bregoli. "When he was about two weeks old he was in a firetruck just hanging round." The Lake Norman High School graduate was living his dream, working first in Mount Mourne, and then for the Atwell Volunteer Department in Rowan County. WBTV CBS 3 CHARLOTTE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
