New Narcan program launches in Vermilion County More than 20 people have died due to drug overdoses just last year, but in 2019, the Danville Fire Division is working to decrease those deaths through a new program they just launched. The Narcan Leave Behind Program was launched on Feb. 1 by both the Danville Fire Division and the Champaign Health Department. According to the National Safety Council. deaths from opioid overdoses have tripled in the last 20 years, reaching more than 43,000 in 2017. For the first time in history, an American is more likely to die from drug overdose (1 in 93) than a car accident (1 in 103). "It seems like we're running overdose calls almost every day. Sometimes one, sometimes several calls in a day and sometimes the same address multiple times in one day," said Danville Fire Marshall Chris McMahon. WAND-TV NBC CHANNEL 17 Update: Second man charged in shooting of Chicago firefighter in Albany Park A second man has been charged in connection with the shooting of a Chicago firefighter earlier this month in Albany Park on the Northwest Side. Jermaine White, 29, was charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, Chicago police said. He was arrested Monday afternoon in south suburban Lansing. White was identified as the person who shot the on-duty firefighter just after 1 a.m. Feb. 2 as crews worked to put out a car fire in the 3300 block of West Wilson Avenue, Chicago police said. Another man, 29-year-old Hollis Williams, was charged with multiple felonies in connection with the shooting less than a week later. Prosecutors said that Williams and the owner of a Chrysler 300 opened fire on two people who set the Chrysler ablaze and shot at a woman they were with. WFLD-TV MYFOX 32 CHICAGO Kankakee pensions continue downward trend Kankakee's police and fire pension funds have been in poor shape for many years, but the news got even worse Tuesday. At the Kankakee City Council's Budget Committee meeting, elected officials learned the two funds are now a combined $106.1 million behind schedule. The fire department fund is $53.1 million underfunded, while the police fund is $52.9 million behind. And while it might be hard to believe based on those staggering debts, the police fund actually is in a much better positions as it is 31.3 percent funded, as compared to the 18.5 percent funding level of the fire department. While that comparison may ultimately be something akin to splitting hairs, the news of the funds desperate positions was not lost on the council members at the meeting. KANKAKEE DAILY JOURNAL - METERED SITE Fire causes major damage to Peoria Heights residence A fire Tuesday night caused extensive damage to a Peoria Heights house, authorities stated. The blaze began about 7:30 p.m. at 902 E. Paris Ave. Peoria Heights police arrived first and reported heavy flames emanating from the rear of the residence. Flames from the southwest corner of the building were extending to the garage, according to the Peoria Heights Fire Department. Complicating matters were access problems to the building and the deep location of the blaze in materials inside the residence, the fire department stated. No injuries were reported. Neither was a damage estimate. The cause of the fire was undetermined and being investigated. Firefighters from Chillicothe, Peoria and West Peoria assisted Heights crews. Apartment building fire in California leaves 2 injured; 'all residents not accounted for,' fire officials say VIDEOS: A massive blaze at a two-story apartment complex sent plumes of smoke into the sky as more than 100 firefighters attempted to extinguish the flames early Wednesday morning. The Orange County Fire Authority and Tustin police responded to the intersection of Williams Street and McFadden Avenue at approximately 3 a.m. as crews encountered heavy fire coming from both floors. Firefighters went into defensive mode as a roof collapsed approximately 45 minutes after the fire erupted. At about 5 a.m., firefighters appeared to make progress on the 5-alarm blaze. At least 100 residents were displaced and two civilians suffered apparent smoke inhalation injuries considered minor. Fire officials are still in the process of confirming if everyone in the building has been accounted for. As many as 120 firefighters were at the scene as the fire rapidly grew in size, possibly affecting up to 100 apartments. No police officers or firefighters were hurt in the incident. KABC-TV ABC 7 LOS ANGELES Maine town told to close fire station, hire more firefighters The town should close the Foreside fire station and hire more full-time firefighters to better meet the increasing number of calls for emergency aid, a consultant told the council Monday. Travis Miller, of consulting firm Criterion and Associates in Massachusetts, made the recommendations after reviewing staffing, the number of calls the Fire Department gets annually and where those calls are coming from. In addition to closing the Foreside station, Miller said, the Fire Department should immediately have at least five people on duty at Central Station 24/7. Under that model, two would serve the ambulance and three would serve the fire engine, he said. Ideally, Miller added, there should also be at least two paramedics on duty at the Winn Road station at all times, as well. That station is now manned by live-in fire students, but they're not always available to respond to calls. FIRE RESCUE 1 North Carolina launches social media campaign to give in-depth look into lives of firefighters The City of Winston-Salem just launched a new social media video campaign with the city fire department, highlighting the people inside of the bright red engines and what they really do. When most people think of Winston-Salem firefighters, they imagine people barging into buildings filled with flames and racing off to help anyone in need. But Chief Trey Mayo wants the community to understand they're more than the headlines. "We have fire trucks come and fire trucks go, and the public sees them moving around not really understanding what they're doing," mayo said. The two new "SAVE" campaign videos show what the firefighters do and why they're so important. "It's difficult to put a value on human life. That's what you're going to see in these videos: preservation of human life," Mayo said.
