| Belleville firefighters rescue 4-year-old from burning apartment VIDEO: A 4-year-old Illinois girl was rescued from a fire at an apartment complex in Belleville Saturday The Belleville Fire Department responded to reports of a fire coming from an apartment block on Freedom Drive shortly after 6 a.m. According to reports, when authorities arrived they found a woman and two of her children had got out of the apartment safely, but a third child had to be rescued by firefighters. Helmet footage shared by the fire department shows firefighters searching the residence as the girl can be heard crying before they take her out of the apartment. The young girl was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment. Information on her condition has not been released. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO No one hurt in afternoon fire at Champaign mobile home Nobody was injured in a mobile home fire Sunday afternoon in Champaign. According to a Champaign Fire Department report, crews were called to a mobile home in the 0-100 block of Magnolia Drive at 2:14 p.m. A passerby reported heavy smoke coming from the mobile home. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the home. They used multiple hose lines to extinguish the fire. Investigators remained at the scene late Sunday afternoon to determine the cause of the fire. Randy Smith of the Champaign Fire Department said the residents of the mobile home would be displaced. CHAMPAIGN NEWS-GAZETTE Erik Hoffer to head Northern Illinois Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board The Northern Illinois Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board and the National Fire Sprinkler Association have named Erik Hoffer as the organization's new executive director. Hoffer will work closely with members of the fire service, elected officials, building officials and decision-makers to raise public awareness about the life- and property-saving benefits of fire sprinklers, provide training and promote progressive legislation. Hoffer has 12 years' experience working with the fire sprinkler industry and fire service. He joined NIFSAB and NFSA more than two years ago as Field Operations Local Coordinator where he has worked with fire departments and municipalities utilizing NIFSAB and NFSA resources to support their public awareness and advocacy efforts, including live fire sprinkler demonstrations, as well as their code and legislative activities. HERALD-NEWS Peoria firefighter/paramedics battle complex fire Peoria firefighter/paramedics were call to the 2500 block of W. Starr at 8:33 a.m. Monday for a possible house fire. Battalion Chief Shawn Sollberger said smoke was seen coming from the attic. "What we thought we had was a fire on the second floor of a two story, [but] it was a three unit apartment complex," Sollberger said. "We stretched a handline to the second floor, searched the second floor and the attic, and could not find the fire." Once crews opened up the apartments on the lower level of the complex, the fire was located. The fire had extended up through the walls to the second floor and attic. Sollberger said the residential structure was not set up to be a three unit apartment complex. Due to the complexity of the layout of the building, crews had the fire under control within 25 minutes. | Governor: Firefighters called to 330 fires across California in 24 hours In the last 24 hours, firefighters have responded to an estimated 330 fires across California, Governor Gavin Newsom stated in a press conference Monday afternoon. The update comes as the Kincade Fire, which sparked northeast of Geyserville on October 23, continues to burn across Northern California. At the time of Newsom's press conference, the fire had burned more than 66,000 acres, and was 5% contained. Despite the high figures, Newsom says this fire season is not worse than in recent years, "though it may feel like it." "We're entering the peak part of fire season that is very familiar to us in California, but not people out of state," Newsom said. "Most people think about fire season as part of the [summer] ... I'll remind folks the Camp Fire and Woolsey Fire, in Northern and Southern California, occurred in the first week of November, so we are very vigilant in this moment. The winds are vexing and are the most [complex] part of this fire. But the good news is the winds are resting." SF GATE ‘He's going to be irreplaceable': Veteran D.C. firefighter who maintained apparatus dies of heart attack Alex Graham was a fixture behind the wheel of Engine 21, part of a crew known as the Alley Rats that raced to calls around Northwest Washington's Adams Morgan neighborhood. But it was in Graham's less flashy work on the training grounds at the other end of the city where the 48-year-old became the department's go-to fix-it man, making sure water flowed from engines and through hoses at the required rate and that ladders could be raised to burning structures. The 17-year veteran known as "Big Al" suffered a heart attack and collapsed on Thursday while conducting a water flow test at the training facility in Blue Plains and died Sunday surrounded by his family at George Washington University Hospital, a department spokesman said. He is the District's 101st firefighter to die in the line of duty and the first since Lt. Kevin McRae had a heart attack at a fire in Shaw in 2015. THE WASHINGTON POST Federal jury says city must pay FDNY EMS members for time spent preparing for their shifts They did the time — now they're going to get paid for it. A federal jury ordered the city to cough up millions of dollars to FDNY emergency medical technicians and paramedics who were stiffed for time spent on preparations before and after their shifts, attorneys for the first responders said Saturday. The judgement came down Friday following a three-week trial, with the jury finding that the city violated the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. More than 2,500 EMTs and paramedics signed onto the suit, which claimed the city never paid them for 15 minutes prior to their tours used to prep their equipment, as well as the 15 minutes after every shift to re-stock their ambulances and exchange information with the next tour — even though they were logged into the electronic time keeping system for city employees, known as CityTime. NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Close call at Kincade Fire in California: Hero firefighter shields evacuees from surging flames, all survive A firefighter battling the explosive Kincade Fire near Geyserville was forced to deploy his personal fire shelter to prevent two residents from being overcome by flames as the blaze surged Friday evening, state officials said. Fire shelters are used as a last resort, and the rescue, at about 6:20 p.m. Friday, prompted deep alarm among crews at the Sonoma County blaze. Cal Fire said the firefighter and the two civilians were expected to survive. All three were taken by ground ambulance to a hospital "for evaluation," Cal Fire said in a statement. "All injuries appear to be non-life-threatening." "While working on an active portion of the fire, the firefighter came across two civilians who were attempting to evacuate from the fire when fire activity intensified," officials said. "At that point the firefighter was forced to deploy his fire shelter, where he shielded them from fire." SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE - METERED SITE Ohio could add more firefighters, but state grants come with a cost Fairfield officials are debating whether to accept a federal firefighting staffing grant because of the city's own financial obligations that come with the funding. Fairfield was awarded a nearly $1.26 million Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant so the fire department could hire six firefighters. The grant requires the city to conribute about $783,000.The city will pay for the upfront personnel costs (such as wages, contractual overtime and benefits) and will be reimbursed over the next three years. The city is also required to maintain the staffing level after the grant period. "The idea behind the SAFER grant is that it should be adding to your operating staffing and therefore the amount of overtime should be decreased by the additional resources that are provided by the federal government," said Finance Director Scott Timmer.
