KPC NEWS Elk Grove Village Firefighters Rescue 11 After Blackout At 2 Alexian Buildings Elk Grove Village firefighters assisted with the evacuation of two medical office buildings at Alexian Brothers Medical Center after a power outage this morning (Monday). Fire Chief Richard Mikel said the two buildings, the Wimmer and Eberle buildings on Biesterfield Road, lost power at 11:10 a.m., but did not have backup generators. Patients visit the medical offices on an outpatient basis. Mikel said the main hospital buildings are equipped with backup generators. There were no reported injuries. Power was expected to be out for the remainder of the day as Mikel said ComEd crews were replacing a transformer. The power outage stopped elevators and stranded some patients on upper floors who were on oxygen and required assistance traversing down stairways to the ground floor. Mikel said firefighters used "stair chairs" to transport 11 patients requiring oxygen tanks from as high as the fifth floor down to the ground floor of the two buildings. JOURNAL & TOPICS NEWSPAPERS ONLINE Princeton Fire Department gets approval to purchase new $694,000 fire engine Princeton City Council has allowed the Princeton Fire Department to move forward with the purchase of a new $694,000 fire engine. The council gave unanimous consensus during Monday's regular meeting. In the past two years, the fire department has developed a plan to better streamline equipment to make operations more efficient for the needs today. The big purchase of this plan includes this new fire engine, which the city will finance. City Manager Theresa Wittenauer said there will be a two-year lag between ordering the engine and the city making its first payment on the new vehicle. This will allow time for better budget planning and looking at ways to offset costs. Her goal is to finance the engine locally. This new engine will allow the fire department to get rid of its current backup fire engine, which Fire Chief Chuck Woolley said last month is "pushing its age." WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR Stateline fire departments caution safety during Fire Prevention Week About a third of all house fires start in the kitchen, and in honor of Fire Prevention Week, local fire departments share some safety tips. "It's something we all do. It's something we are all around," said Jon Reitman, Cherry Valley Fire Protection District Inspector. Cooking is the number one cause of house fires and home fire injuries, and experts said there are simple things you can do quickly to prevent a disaster. "If you are using your stove we check our food regularly. We use that timer, that sound everyone hates we use that timer when we use that stove," said Tim Brown, a Fire Inspector with the Rockford Fire Department. "When you are using pans and pots have the lids close by. So in the event of a flare over it will choke the fire and contain it right there that's probably the greatest thing," said Reitman WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD 6 local fire departments receive grants from Illinois American Water Streator, Reading, Allen Township (Ransom), Grand Ridge, Dana and Leonore fire departments will receive grant money from Illinois American Water. More than $87,000 will be shared by 88 Illinois fire departments through Illinois American Water's 2020 Firefighter Grant Program. Since the program was created in 2010, over 680 grants totaling more than $668,000 have been awarded to fire and emergency organizations across Illinois. "We know how important water is in protecting homes and businesses. We also understand the impact of the pandemic on our first responders. This is why we approved every grant we received in full this year, supporting our local heroes in a meaningful way," said Justin Ladner, Illinois American Water president, in a press release. "Some of the departments will use the grant funds for pandemic-related needs, while others will allocate the funds for communication tools, extraction equipment, training resources and more." 2 young children killed in 5-alarm New Jersey blaze; Rescuers impeded by bars on windows PHOTOS: A five-alarm fire in Elizabeth left two young girls dead and two adults hospitalized in critical condition Monday, a city official said. The children who died were approximately 7 and 11 years old, according to city spokeswoman Kelly Martins. The blaze began around 6 p.m. in the 800 block of Elizabeth Avenue and was under control about two hours later. Police officers rushed to rescue the children, but were impeded by bars on a window of the building. The two adults - a man and a woman - were taken to an area hospital, the spokeswoman said. At least 21 residents were displaced from their homes by the inferno. Authorities were working to determine what caused the fire. The fire raged through a building that includes commercial space and apartments. NEW JERSEY JOURNAL Related with Video: Officials Say 2 Children Killed In Building Fire In New Jersey Retired New York Firefighter Invents Potentially Life-Saving Device When Ray Tannatta first introduced the Highrise Lifeline in the early 1990s, it seemed to be all the rage, being repeatedly featured on national TV. "I got a lot of attention. I had people calling me from all over the country, all over the world," Tannatta said. "At the time, I thought my product was working and the message is getting out there and people should be buying it. I had a company buy it but they never put it on the market." Thirty years after its initial flash in the pan, the device is finally for sale. Tannatta is now marketing it himself online. "It should be out there, it will save lives," he said. "We lose 2,000 to 3,000 people every year in fires." A former Schenectady firefighter for more than two decades, Tannatta invented the device after a local man died from smoke inhalation before help could arrive. SPECTRUM NEWS Commentary: Specialized Training Helps Chaplains Provide Care for First Responders First responder sirens were wailing nearly non-stop as Hurricane Isaias churned above eastern Pennsylvania. Listening to dispatches about people trapped by flood waters, motor vehicle accidents, and a commercial structure fire, I was concerned and praying for the first responders during this storm. As Isaias swept northward, a cascade of agencies responded. And with this incident, the shoulders of chiefs, deputy chiefs, commissioners, supervisors, and other command personnel grew heavier with disaster responsibilities. I wonder how agency leaders are keeping it together. The wellbeing of department personnel ultimately falls on the shoulders of chiefs and supervisors, regardless of workload, critical incident, or personal stress. As the saying goes, the buck stops here. Already exhausted from the plight of COVID-19 victims, chiefs especially are experiencing the daunting task of leading their departments. IN PUBLIC SAFETY Salt Lake City firefighters warned to expect police backup on fewer calls Salt Lake City firefighters were warned not to expect police officers as often as they have before because of a regular backlog of calls, according to a leaked department memo. The note, penned by Assistant Fire Chief Mike Fox, begins by saying the police department has changed some of their responses "due to COVID" and that they are experiencing "regular days when they have a backlog of calls." Fire department officials turned down a 2News request for an on-camera interview and advised we talk to the police about the call backlog and changes to department policies. A spokesperson for Salt Lake City police on Friday denied the department has a staffing issue because of COVID-19 or any other reason. He referred 2News back to the fire department to discuss the content of the memo. In paragraph two, Fox says "you may not get police on low acuity medical calls, accidents... or on other calls that you would normally see them on." KUTV-TV CBS 2 NEWS SALT LAKE CITY New drone program, first of its kind in the world, now offered at Ohio career campuses A new drone technology program launched Monday at Great Oaks Career Campuses, and it's the first of its kind in the world. Through the program, first responders can become drone certified as an emergency services drone operator. "It's opening up doors to programs beyond your traditional law enforcement and firefighter basic training academy. The idea is to add programs and bring them back to continue their education over the course of their 25-30-year careers," fire safety services supervisor Johnny Mason said. The course teaches first responders how to fly the drone and how to view and interpret emergency scenes from above. "The drone can do anything from locate a fire, and give us hot spots in a burning building, telling where a fire may still be, missing people. It can go out and find a heat signature and tell us and help us locate," program coordinator Dan Runyan said. Monday was the first day for the course.
