Eric West named interim Bloomington fire chief Deputy Chief Eric West will serve as Bloomington's interim fire chief. The city announced Monday that West, who has been with the department for nearly 30 years, will move into his new role on Nov. 16. Chief Brian Mohr is retiring. "It was an easy choice for me to have Eric step right in and serve in this longer-term interim role," City Manager Tim Gleason said in a statement. "His years of experience, community relationships, and sound knowledge of both local needs and national trends make him a great choice to lead the department during this time." West served as battalion chief before becoming deputy chief of operations in November 2015. He holds a bachelor's degree in occupational safety from Illinois State University and has experience in fire operations, emergency and hazardous materials management, disaster response and fire safety. BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL PANTAGRAPH Mattoon Fire Department issues reminder about new law, smoke detector assistance The Mattoon Fire Department has issued a reminder about a new state law regarding smoke detectors and about a detector assistance program for those in financial need. The department said the Illinois Smoke Detector Act has been revised so that it now requires all residents to have a 10 year, sealed battery detector in their homes by January 2023 to replace the traditional 9 volt battery powered unit. "These new detectors cost approximately $15-$20, however, it is estimated that residents will save $40-50 dollars in battery costs over the lifetime of the unit when compared to a 9 volt powered detector," said Fire Chief Jeff Hilligoss. He said the new law is for structures built before 1988, whereas those built or remodeled after 1988 are required to have detectors hard wired with battery backup capability. JOURNAL AND COURIER - METERED SITE Car Owners Suspect String Of Vehicle Fires On Chicago's Northwest Side Were Arson, But No Clear Answers Four car fires within a week and a half, all within a mile and a half of each other. Some of the owners of the charred cars are raising questions, saying it must be arson, but when Morning Insider Tim McNicholas asked police about that, the answer wasn't so clear. At Palmer and Kostner, a tow truck hauled off what's left of Dominic Stewart's car, which was torched after he had just bought a few months ago. "I think somebody set it on purpose. They made me feel real bad, like, what was their purpose of doing it? I don't know," Stewart said. The fire happened early Halloween morning. A police report described antifreeze bottles found nearby, and surveillance video showing three males gathered by the car. "For what reason, I don't know. They don't even know me. I don't even know them," Stewart said. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

San Francisco Firefighter Critically Injured in Freak Accident A San Francisco firefighter was in critical condition Monday after hitting his head while at the scene of a high-rise fire, the fire department said. The injury happened after firefighters responded to a fire at 55 Spear St., San Francisco Fire Department Lt. Jonathan Baxter said. "As this incident was resolving, a Muni bus from SFMTA was driving through the incident operational area. During this same time period, a firefighter who was near a hose line was inadvertently struck by that hose line, dropped to the ground, hitting his head," Baxter said. Baxter said the firefighter Matthew Vann was unconscious and not breathing. He was transported to a Zuckerberg General Hospital and remained in critical condition Monday night. Muni says there were no passengers on the bus and the operator has been driving for nearly 6 years. He will be tested for drugs and alcohol and put on non-driving status during the investigation. KNTV NBC 11 SAN JOSE Tennessee gas station a total loss, no injuries after fire at Seymour Speedway Market VIDEO: A Seymour gas station is a total loss after it went up in flames Monday afternoon. Seymour Volunteer Fire Department Chief John Linsenbigler says crews were called to the scene at the Seymour Speedway Market on Highway 411 just before 12:45 p.m. Linsenbigler says everyone inside made it out of the business, and no injuries were reported. Fire crews worked for hours to put out hot spots on scene. "My boss saw the fire starting. He yelled at one of us to run over there. I took off running… I opened the door and I hollered there was a fire and screamed again, ‘fire,'" said Carl Maner, who works next door. Maner says at first the fire started out small, then engulfed the building within minutes. "None of the buried tanks ignited, they shut that off. They had approximately 1,700 gallons of kerosene on the east side of the structure that, we weren't here 10 minutes, and it blew up," Linsenbigler said. WATE-TV ABC 6 KNOXVILLE Fire departments dissatisfied with an Ohio county's 911 system amid new levy Four minutes, 57 seconds. Five minutes, 13 seconds. Sixteen minutes, 30 seconds. They add up to minutes and seconds. But when that time is spent on a 911 call during an emergency, it's not as inconsequential. "If somebody is down there having a heart attack, minutes count. Seconds count," New Lexington Fire Chief Jim Fain said. A 1-mill, five-year levy dedicated for Perry County 911 and communications is on Tuesday's ballot. It will generate what 911 supervisor Derrick Keylor said is a long-awaited annual fund of $854,225 for the center. "Right now, we seem to be doing good, but there's no catch, there's no safety net," said Keylor. "If the budget cycles, you'll have to cut employees somewhere." Five Perry County fire chiefs have taken issue with the 911 center's services, questioning if additional funding and technology will help a problem that they say is more focused on fostering employee skills. ZANESVILLE TIMES RECORDER The Story of Rochester New York's Noon Whistle Nobody who lives or works in the vicinity of downtown Rochester needs a watch to know when it's lunchtime. Six days a week, at high noon, the blast of the fire department's siren marks the midday hour. However, the daily sounding of the noon whistle has nothing to do with signaling a meal break and everything to do with a devastating fire that nearly destroyed an iconic Main Street business. Back in 1926, Rochester boasted a brand-new, state-of-the-art Ford dealership. Partners C. Lawrence "Larry" Jerome and Oliver N. Phillips had opened their modern showroom and service garage at 215 South Main in February of that year with a well-attended community dance party. The Phillips & Jerome building was part of a wave of new investment that was exciting Rochester at the time. The state had announced in 1925 that it was planning to build an 810-foot-long, concrete highway bridge to connect South Hill with the foot of Main Street, and business was booming in anticipation of the coming construction.
