| Chicago sees deadliest Memorial Day weekend in years: 10 fatally shot, 38 wounded Ten people are dead and 38 others are wounded so far in weekend shootings in Chicago — the deadliest Memorial Day weekend since 2015, when 12 people were killed. Despite the state's stay-at-home order, the weekend's death toll has already surpassed last year's holiday weekend, when seven people were killed and 34 were injured during the period from 5 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Tuesday. In 2018, seven people died and 30 others were wounded. In 2017, six people were killed and 44 others were wounded. In 2016, six people were killed and 56 wounded. At the beginning of Memorial Day weekend — the unofficial start of summer — Chicago Police Supt. David Brown announced opening a Summer Operations Center to centralize police resources in an effort to tamp down on summer gun violence. WFLD-TV MYFOX 32 CHICAGO Follow Up: Cook County Board resolution instructs county health officials to give COVID-19 patient addresses to first responders The Cook County Board has approved a resolution that directs the county health department to provide the addresses of COVID-19 patients to first responders. For months police, fire and EMS workers in the Cook County suburbs have been saying for their safety, they need to know when a call for service involves someone infected by the new coronavirus. Following contentious viewpoints and lengthy discussions at this week's board meeting, the board voted nine to seven in favor of providing COVID-19 positive addresses. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said she was "profoundly disappointed" by the passage. Some members of the board expressed concern about racism in the system and fears that homes flagged as having novel coronavirus would stigmatize the patient(s) and others living inside. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Fire in Chicago's Wicker Park Leaves One Dead One person was found dead at the scene of a fire Saturday in Wicker Park. Crews responded to a fire at about 2:31 a.m. at a coach house at 2154 W. Potomac Ave., according to Chicago police and fire officials. One adult, whose age and gender were not immediately known, was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene, according to Chicago Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford. The person's cause of death is under investigation by Area Two detectives. The Cook County medical examiner's office has not released details about the fatality. The fire has since been extinguished and the cause is being investigated by the fire department and arson detectives, authorities said. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO Six taken to hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning in North Peoria Six people, including one who was revived by CPR, were taken to an area hospital after poisoning from high levels of carbon monoxide in North Peoria home Sunday afternoon. According to a release from the Peoria Fire Department, firefighters were called to 1325 N. Holly Hedges Drive at about 3:45 p.m. on a report of a person done. However, when they arrived, they found several people unconscious or in an altered state of consciousness" throughout the house. Pets, the department wrote in its release seemed "lethargic and ill." Inside they found "extremely high and dangerous level of carbon monoxide present in the home." Extra help was called in to help manage the scene. In all, 20 firefighters were called to the scene to help with victim care and to ventilate the structure, said Battalion Chief Nate Rice in the release. PEORIA JOURNAL STAR - METERED SITE Rock Falls, Sterling fire chief Cook retiring Gary Cook is retiring as head of Twin City Joint Fire Command. Cook has helmed the joint command since it was created by the city councils of Rock Falls and Sterling in 2013. Prior to that, he was the deputy fire chief in Rock Falls under J.W. Larson and the interim fire chief in Sterling. Rock Falls Mayor Bill Wescott has known and worked with Cook for more than 40 years, dating back to when they formed Twin Cities Ambulance in 1979, and Cook was with the Rock Falls Fire Department when Wescott came on board. "He was a mentor not only to myself but other new members of the fire department," Wescott said. "A great educator. A great teacher. Great leadership. During the course of his career, he advanced through the ranks and always had the respect of everybody that he worked with." His retirement is effective July 2. SAUKVALLEY.COM Decatur firefighters rescue pregnant woman from burning house Firefighters battled an early Sunday morning house fire. The Decatur Fire Department responded to the 1400 Block of East Condit just after 4:27 a.m. Sunday. The department reported first arriving crews found fire coming from a window of the house and a pregnant woman on the front porch roof. The woman had escaped out of the second floor window because she was unable to make it downstairs due to smoke and heat conditions. | Warehouse Fire Devastates San Francisco's Fishing Industry A huge fire that tore through a warehouse on San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf has destroyed fishing gear used to deliver about two-thirds of the city's fresh seafood, threatening to disrupt the upcoming Dungeness crab season, local fishermen said Sunday. The fire erupted before dawn Saturday and wiped out the warehouse the size of a football field near the end of Pier 45. Larry Collins, who runs the San Francisco Community Fishing Association, estimates that thousands of crab, shrimp and black cod traps worth up to $5 million were lost in the blaze. He told the San Francisco Chronicle the numbers could be far higher since port officials changed the warehouse's function into a storage facility in February because it lacked proper fire sprinklers. "Pier 45 is the heart and soul of commercial fishing out of the Bay Area," Collins said. "To take a hit like this, it's a bad one. Most people don't think about where their salmon, crab or black cod come from, but that's where: It's Pier 45." That status is something EMS workers in Iowa have sought long before COVID-19. Being declared "essential" would require ambulance service across the state, instead of relying on a patchwork of volunteers, agencies and providers. Mark McCulloch, deputy chief of EMS for West Des Moines Emergency Medical Services, says he thinks the current crisis will prompt those who have resisted such a move to reconsider. "The understanding of how important and how critical our services are, I think, is increased," he states. McCulloch says the lack of guaranteed emergency medical services is especially a problem in rural parts of Iowa, where younger adults are moving away and reducing volunteer ranks. PUBLIC NEWS SERVICE Fire truck adorned with flag tips over in Pennsylvania VIDEO: A fire truck, adorned with a large American flag, tipped over shortly before 11:30 a.m. Monday in Plumstead Township, Bucks County. The view from Chopper 6 showed the truck on its side in a parking lot. The extended ladder was on the ground, stretched across the roadway in the area 4040 Ferry Road. The flag was attached to the ladder. Officials say the truck was placed outside the fire company to display a flag over Route 611. When the crew went to reposition the truck the vehicle tipped over. The ladder struck a car on Route 611. "Unfortunately a vehicle was traveling southbound on the road at that time underneath the tower, the tower hit the roof of the vehicle. There were two occupants in that vehicle that had minor injuries that were taken to the hospital and should be getting released shortly," said Lt. Richard Frederick of the Plumstead Township. Police confirm there were minor injuries in the incident. WPVI-TV ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA There is 'little evidence' coronavirus is under control in most states, report says The spread of the novel coronavirus has not slowed in 24 states, according to a new model by Imperial College London that forecasts infection spikes as more people travel and leave their homes in the coming weeks. Why it matters: Nearly every state across the U.S. has taken steps to reopen their economies partially or completely, including some regions and industries that are deemed "low-risk" for spreading the virus, per a New York Times analysis. What they found: Texas, Arizona, Illinois, Colorado and Ohio are at the highest risk in the college's model — which has not yet been peer-reviewed — followed by Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Alabama and Wisconsin. The researchers predict that deaths over the next two months could exceed the current national death toll by more than two-fold, if transmissions continue to rise as less social distancing is enforced.
