Area code change causes some fire, burglar alarm issues in Central Illinois When making a call in Central Illinois, people now must dial 10-digit phone numbers. This is because of a new area code, 447, being introduced as an overlay to the territory currently served by the 217 area code. However, some companies didn't get the memo. Earlier in March, a Champaign business had an issue with its fire alarm system not alerting the alarm company or the fire department about a smoke alarm. The owner disclosed that he later found out the issue was the alarm system; the panel in his business didn't dial the 217 area code first. "Some alarm systems still use the phone lines," said Champaign Fire Department Building Safety Supervisor Randy Smith. "If that wasn't put in as 217, they could potentially have an issue." WICS-TV ABC 20 SPRINGFIELD Village of Bradley has fully funded its police, fire pension Due to hot-running revenues in Bradley — most notably sales tax figures — Bradley may be the only municipality in Illinois to have its police and fire pension funds fully funded. At Monday's Bradley Village Board meeting, the board unanimously approved the request of finance director Rob Romo to amend its Fiscal Year 2021 budget as a result of surging revenues which will result in a budget surplus of $4,767,431. As a result of these positive figures, Bradley will soon transfer $1,501,894 into its fire pension fund to bring it to 100 percent funding at $3.2 million. As a result of board action in early February, the board moved to fully funded the $34 million police pension fund by selling $11.8 million of pension obligation bonds to fill a $10.5 million hole in the fund. These bonds are to be repaid in 20 years. In the year of the COVID-19-induced pandemic, Bradley is bucking the trend and reaping the benefits of a strong retail base — anchored by a collection of retailers deemed essential. DAILY JOURNAL Woman airlifted after two-vehicle collision in rural Champaign County A 31-year-old Sadorus woman was airlifted to Urbana's Carle Foundation Hospital after her vehicle was involved in a wreck with a truck Monday morning in southwest Champaign County. According to the Champaign County Sheriff's Office, the female was northbound in a compact car that was involved in a collision with a truck driven by a 32-year-old Monticello man and containing a 2-year-old passenger in a child-restraint seat. The driver of the truck, according to the sheriff's office, was eastbound on County Road 1200 North and failed to yield to the car, which was traveling on 600 East. The driver of the compact car had to be removed from her vehicle by Bondville Fire Department firefighters. The driver of the truck was able to get himself and the child out of the truck without assistance. They were transported to Carle by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries. CHAMPAIGN NEWS-GAZETTE Aurora looks at contract rollover for fire department officers Aurora is looking at a rollover contract agreement with its fire department officers. Aldermen are likely to approve the one-year agreement with the Aurora Fire Officers Association at the regular City Council meeting Tuesday night. The agreement would continue a contract between the city and the fire officers that expired Dec. 31, 2020. It would run until Dec. 31, 2021. According to Alisia Lewis, the city's Human Relations director, both sides decided on the rollover because of uncertainties caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The city would likely be in a more stable position later in 2021, officials said. The union approved the rollover Feb. 25. The fire officers would get a 2% wage increase for the year, and in return agreed to up their employee insurance contribution to 16.5%. They also agreed to a higher deductible for the health care plan. CHICAGO TRIBUNE - METERED SITE Garage destroyed in Decatur fire A garage was destroyed and a shed caught fire Monday in Decatur. New crash rig rolls out at Delaware Airport VIDEO: The Delaware Air National Guard has a new piece of emergency equipment ready to roll in the event of an aircraft emergency at the Wilmington Airport. The Rosenbauer Panther 6x6 Airport Rescue Fire Fighting unit (ARFF) is 39-feet long, 12 ft. high, and 10 ft. wide, weighs 77,000 lbs., and carries 3,000 gallons of water, 400 gallons of foam, and 500 pounds of dry chemical. The new rig is part of a major United States Air Force contract for 71 Rosenbauer crash trucks authorized in November, 2018, at a total cost of almost $50 million and replaces a nearly 25-year old unit at Wilmington Airport. Ronald Stanton, Assistant Chief of Operations for the Guard's fire department at Wilmington Airport, said the truck has all of the latest technological tools for fighting aircraft fires. "It uses ultra-high pressure for discharging its water," said Stanton, "which means the water comes out in smaller droplets which allows it to absorb heat more efficiently. WDEL 1150AM & WDEL.COM Study will help support and protect women in the fire service As more women join the fire service, it's imperative to understand the occupational risks involved for these women. And thanks to $1.5 million dollar grant from FEMA that will be possible. The funding will help support research to examine how being a firefighter affects women's health. "There's the fires, the smoke that we breathe in, but it's also the exhaust from the fire trucks, the ambulances that we get exposed to on a daily basis," said Captain Liliana Pesqueira, the Tucson Fire Department. The study will be in partnership with the university of Arizona College of Public health, The University of Arizona cancer center and TFD. The study will include 200 firefighters in total from across the country that will take part in the study, both 100 new recruits and 100 incumbent firefighters. The study will take 3-years to conduct. As someone who has been on the force for two decades, Captain Pesqueira said a study like this makes her feel heard in a field where the vast majority are male. Applicants that qualify include health care workers, first responders, and many multi-industry workers. In addition, families who earn up to 500% of the federal poverty level or $125,470 for a family of four are eligible to apply. Workers will need to be recommended by employers, unions, or social service providers who can verify employment during the pandemic. Applicants will also need to submit the required supporting documentation for expenses to be awarded. WHEC-TV NBC NEWS 10 ROCHESTER Defendant in California's Ghost Ship warehouse fire to serve remainder of 12-year sentence at home The main leaseholder of an Oakland warehouse that caught fire during a party in 2016, killing 36 people, was sentenced Monday to 12 years in prison but may spend the remainder of his term at home as part of a plea deal with prosecutors. Derick Almena, 50, will serve one-and-a-half years at home with a GPS ankle monitor due to credit for time already spent behind bars while awaiting trial and good behavior. He will also be required to complete three years of post-custody supervised release. The defendant was already on house arrest after being released from jail last year due COVID-19 concerns. Almena pleaded guilty in January to all 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter in exchange for the 12-year split prison sentence, which marks the end to a case that was first derailed by a hung jury and then the coronavirus pandemic. Relatives of those who died in the blaze had urged the judge to refuse the plea deal and have another trial instead. KABC-TV ABC 7 LOS ANGELES More Than $18K Raised for Bitten New York Paramedic Emergency workers and local officials are responding to news of a 28-year-old paramedic from Staten Island who was allegedly bitten on the face early Friday morning by an emotionally disturbed teenager in Brooklyn. Jenna Piscitello, of Great Kills, could have permanent scarring on her cheek from the attack, which occurred as medics were attempting to lay the female patient on a stretcher, according to a statement issued by the union representing city EMS workers. "We're all familiar with the fictional killer Hannibal Lecter; for Ms. Piscitello, that horror became a reality," wrote Local 2507 President Oren Barzilay. "No one should come to work having to fear getting assaulted or possibly killed." Piscitello and the teen — who was believed to be under the influence of drugs — both were treated NYU Langone Hospital Brooklyn, the Daily News reported. EMS WORLD PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
