‘It's So Tragic': Wife Loses Husband Of 30 Years In Wrightwood House Fire A woman lost her husband of 30 years in a house fire early Tuesday morning. John "Stan" Johnson, 77, died in a fire on Chicago's Southwest Side. The man was the only person inside, his wife was at work at the time of the incident. The fire started in a one-story house at 85th and Whipple around 3 a.m. Tuesday. Firefighters battled thick smoke and flames and had to douse hot spots on the front of the building. His wife, Brenda Johnson arrived at the home shortly after she was notified by her Ring camera. "He was a really sweet gentle man," Johnson said. "It's so tragic." Johnson said she was at work just before 3 a.m., when she got an alert on her phone from their Ring camera. With no idea what was happening inside, she called 911 and rushed home. When she arrived, she learned her husband, the man she'd spent the last 50 years of her life with, had passed away. CBS CHICAGO Bradley has new assistant fire chief, seeks expansion Bradley has a new part-time assistant fire chief and that is just the first step the village hopes to be taking when it comes to transforming its fire department. On Monday, the administration introduced Don Kaderabek, a 35-year fire veteran, who most recently had been deputy chief for five years, beginning in 2015, with the Bloomingdale Fire Protection District in DuPage County. Kaderabek, 58, began his firefighting career with the Niles Fire Department in 1985. He served with Niles for 28 years. He had short stints with the Riverside Fire Department and the Roselle Fire Department where he served in leadership roles. With Bradley, Kaderabek will earn $40 per hour and is expected to work no more than 30 hours per week. KANKAKEE DAILY JOURNAL Grandchildren of fallen fire heroes join Chicago Fire Department In 1965, Chicago Firefighter Richard Franzen lost his grip while riding on the back of Truck 20 after a fire rescue in Englewood. He fell into a coma, never regained consciousness and died a few months later from complications related to the fall. In 1982, Chicago firefighter Robert Danaher collapsed from smoke inhalation and suffered a fatal heart attack after re-entering a burning home where he had already rescued a woman in a wheelchair. Now the grandchildren of both Franzen and Danaher — Matthew Franzen and Maria Caponera — have followed in the footsteps of those fallen fire heroes. Mayor Lori Lightfoot recognized the special moment by asking both grandchildren to stand at a Navy Pier graduation ceremony for 110 new firefighters and 30 new paramedics. CHICAGO SUN-TIMES - METERED SITE Freeport Fire Department swears in new hires Two men whose lifelong dream to be firefighters came true Monday as they're sworn in to the Freeport Fire Department. Benjamin Graff and Kevin Meads both knew they wanted to be firefighters when they were in high school. They both have volunteered and worked at other area departments but took a big step in their careers by being officially sworn in at full time positions. They say they're excited to have been surrounded by family and friends today and are excited to serve the community. "The thing I'm most excited for is being able to serve the community that I live in. We recently moved here. Just being able to do the best I can for the town and working with a great group of guys and having fun doing it," said Kevin Meads. WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD Fire heavily damages Springfield home; occupants displaced A home was heavily damaged in a Monday Springfield fire, responders said. According to Fire Chief Allen Reyne, authorities responded at 2 p.m. to the 2100 block of E. North Grand Ave. and found a one-story home with heavy fire in the rear. Crews had the fire under control in about 10 minutes. Three occupants self-evacuated from the home. One of them went to HSHS St. John's Hospital after responders treated them at the scene. The extent of injuries is unknown Monday evening, but Reyne did say all occupants are displaced. He said authorities rescued a dog and ferret from the home, and that other animals are unaccounted for. WAND-TV NBC CHANNEL 17 PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

West Virginia mayor, firefighters union announce settlement regarding holiday pay Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin took steps Monday to correct the way firefighters in the city have been paid for holidays since 2012. A $1.7 million-dollar agreement has been reached between the City of Charleston and the firefighters union. Mayor Goodwin was joined by Myron Boggess of Charleston Professional Firefighters Local 317 to announce the agreement that addresses back-payment discrepancies. In late 2011, Charleston City Council approved changes to the way firefighters were compensated for holidays. According to Mayor Goodwin's office, this change directly contradicted state law. Goodwin says that is why her administration worked to negotiate a correction with Local 317. "Our firefighters deserve to be paid fairly and in accordance with state law," said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. WSAZ-TV NBC 3 Fire department in New York seeks help Fort Drum's fire department puts out a call for help. Over the past 3 years, 5 of its fire trucks have failed inspection and haven't been replaced. With a fleet of aging apparatus, the firefighters' union tells us it needs Washington to come to the rescue. To fight fires, you need the right tools. On Fort Drum, those tools are becoming scarce. Not one or two, but 5 Fort Drum trucks are no longer usable. "They're failing basic inspections, cracks and frames, etc., deeming them unfit for operation and they're immediately taken out of service," said James Haggerty, president of Fort Drum Firefighters I.A.F.F. Local F-105 Out of service are Engine 1, built in 1995, Engine 3, built in 1987, and Rescue 2, built in 2000. While maintained and refurbished over the years, they're now deemed unsafe and can't be on the roads. "We have to have something to back fill it with and unfortunately, we've lost so many apparatus over the past couple of years that we're running out of apparatus to back fill," said Haggerty. WWNY-TV CBS 7 CARTHAGE California city looks to neutral judge in firefighter contract dispute A city dispute with its firefighters' union over wage increases may need third-party intervention to resolve. After stalling on contract negotiations in October, negotiators have invoked a provision known as "binding arbitration" for the first time in city history, according to the city's human resources director. Santa Cruz voters in March 1996 approved a city charter amendment mail-in ballot measure that allows firefighters to use this type of dispute resolution, with the city of Watsonville firefighters' union following suit two years later. Negotiators from both sides of the table said during interviews in recent days that they were "disappointed" and "not excited" that the issue had escalated to outside intercession, as they have traditionally worked well together. The major area of disagreement after a handful of meetings between July and September has been focused on the increasing rate of firefighter compensation rates planned in coming years, representatives told the Sentinel. SANTA CRUZ SENTINEL Asbestos forces Virginia fire station to close during remediation Hampton has a fire station with no firefighters and no fire trucks. The city had to close one of its stations for the time being after workers found asbestos. Fire Station 7 on Fox Hill Road was built in 1967. Last week, renovators were replacing some flooring and found what they thought was asbestos. City spokesperson Fred Gaskins says the tiles and air inside the firehouse were immediately tested. "Tests showed there was not asbestos in the air and that's a very good thing, but the tile itself has to be removed by a licensed contractor." Station 7 is closed until further notice. Yellow caution tape, normally used to keep people away from fires, is now keeping them away from the firehouse. A dumpster out back sits sealed in plastic. The city says people in the area surrounding the station have nothing to worry about. WAVY-TV NBC 10 PORTSMOUTH No Ladders Needed: World's Tallest Firefighter In Tennessee VIDEO: Representatives with the Guinness Book of World Records recently visited Tullahoma, Tennessee and brought a measuring stick with them.
