VIDEO: After narrowly escaping a fire that spread to his home, Larry Newson is feeling grateful to be alive. The Chicago Fire Department responded to the 6600 block of South Hartwell Avenue around 7:30 a.m. Saturday. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire that spread from the vacant home where it is believed to have started, to two adjacent homes. Newson said he had no idea anything was going on until he heard the voices of firefighters attempting to get inside. "The flames went right to where I was sleeping. I'm a hard sleeper and I don't know how I woke up," said Newson. "Once I started seeing the flames, I just went into panic, because I wasn't sure if I was going to die, if my pathway to getting downstairs was cut off."

VIDEO: The City of Farmington's volunteer-based fire protection district is looking for help to raise enough money to buy an automated chest compression machine that can save lives in a medical emergency. It's called a LUCAS Device. It costs about $25,000 and can be used on patients experiencing cardiac arrest. First responders would slide a plate under a patient's back, connect the chest compressor overtop, press the power button, and the LUCAS Device would do the rest of the work. "It delivers chest compression in the event of a cardiac arrest at a consistent rate and depth; a lot more consistent and better than manual CPR can do," said Fire Chief Matt Watters. Fulton County Emergency Medical Association has had a LUCAS Device on all of its mainline units since 2016, according to Director of Quality Assurance Chris Blackwell.

At least nine people were injured in a four-alarm fire that swept across a cluster of buildings in Brooklyn late Monday night, according to the FDNY. The fire broke out at a building on Dean Street between Mother Gaston Boulevard and Sackman Street around 10:40 p.m. Over 160 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the scene, per fire officials. Three civilians and six firefighters were injured in the blaze, according to the FDNY. Neighbors watched the hours-long effort to control the fire. At least 25 adults and six children were displaced, per fire officials. It was put under control at 1:30 a.m. and the fire is under investigation.

VIDEOS: On Sept. 8, 1994, 132 people were killed in what is the deadliest air disaster in Pennsylvania's history: The crash of USAir Flight 427. On this edition of Chronicle, we looked back at rarely seen video from the years-long investigation and spoke with the lead investigator who provided exclusive new insights into the crash. Families shared memories of the loved ones they lost and we share the untold stories of those at the site who helped that day. Three decades after the disaster of Flight 427, we're still learning more about the people who jumped into action to help on that fateful day: the firefighters from Hopewell Township Volunteer Fire Department, the man who would one day become the chief for Pittsburgh's Bureau of Fire and a USAir employee who raced to the scene from his home.

VIDEO: The 2024-2025 Tennessee Teacher of the Year has been crowned: Bryan Kerns of Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport City Schools. Kerns has spent 17 years of a 20-year teaching career as an Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 teacher at Dobyns-Bennett High School. However, Kerns also holds a unique position — fire management instructor. The Teacher of the Year helped develop the Dobyns-Bennett Fire Program, an opportunity which includes the D-B Prescribed Fire team and full progression of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Fire Management Services courses. "Students were like, ‘Tell us more fire stories,'" said Kerns. "I started the club in 2018, 2019, thinking, you know, I'll have some kids come after school and I'll tell fire stories."

VIDEO: Over 75 million Americans are being urged to take proper precautions as temperatures could top 100 degrees in parts of the Midwest on Tuesday. The extreme heat comes as a new report published in JAMA shows that heat-related deaths have risen significantly in the U.S. in recent years. The report, which was compiled using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, showed there were 21,518 fatalities from 1999-2023 citing heat as the underlying or contributing cause of death. During that time, after using age-adjusted mortality rates, the CDC's data indicated a 63% increase in heat-related fatalities during the 24-year span. Without adjusting for age, there has been a 117% increase in heat-related deaths, the data said.
