Confidential Fire Chief Recruitment: City of St. Cloud - St. Cloud, MN
Firefighters from several northwest suburban jurisdictions spent Monday afternoon and night battling a stubborn brush fire. Flames were raging Monday night near Penny and Sutton roads in South Barrington. Fire officials brought in water tankers to help put out the flames. We are told this started from a giant mulch pile at a landscaping company near Penny Road and Route 59 earlier in the day. The flames then jumped across the railroad tracks, also engulfing South Barrington and nearby areas in smoke. The strong winds Monday night did not help.

A local firefighter lost his battle with cancer on Sunday. Friends and family of 40-year-old Champaign firefighter Trevor Herderhorst shared that he was an amazing father and friend. Herderhorst became a firefighter in 2005 with the Cahokia Volunteer Fire Department and landed a position at the Champaign Fire Department (CFD) in 2018. His health battle started in December 2014 with Esophageal Adenocarcinoma. In January 2019, during a routine scan, doctors found spots on his lungs. An active tumor was found and Herderhorst was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Through it all, the Champaign Fire Department has been by his family's side. In April 2021, his health took a turn for the worst, and he was put in hospice care. A few weeks ago, members from CFD took Herderhorst to a St. Louis Blues game.

She rescues dogs, but a suburban woman ended up needing to be rescued herself after being trapped for hours inside a sewer. CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot reported on the incident from Addison Monday, with incredible video you'll see only on 2. Kris Bylica started her search for a dog named Shelby at a storm drain after seeing paw prints. What she didn't know is she'd be underground for nearly three hours, doing an army crawl trying to find her way out, after her flashlight batteries died. Video shows the Addison Fire Protection District arriving at a storm grate to Bylica. First, you see her drenched jacket emerge from the area once covered by the storm grate. Then, you see them lift Bylica to safety. "I was really lucky that I didn't die down there," Bylica said. Bylica had been searching inside the storm sewer for 7-month-old Shelby.

PHOTO: Springfield firefighters responded to an early morning crash Tuesday. A car reportedly ran into a house around 4 a.m. in the 200 block of East Black. One person had to be extricated from the vehicle, according to the firefighters union. We're told they suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

PHOTOS: There's not much left. There's one less McLaren 765LT in the world after one went up in flames in Upper Gwynedd Township, Pennsylvania, which is just north of Philadelphia. The fire took place while the car was filling up at a gas station. There were no injuries, except for the owner's broken heart from losing this limited-run machine. According to the fire department, crews were on the scene for two hours attempting to put out the fire. They weren't able to quell the flames before the McLaren burned up to a pile of metal and melted plastic. The only body panel that was still recognizable was the hood. The fire department doesn't specify the cause of the fire, but the images suggest it is somehow related to refueling the vehicle. The photos of the aftermath indicate that there's going to be no way to repair this car. The monocoque isn't even visible anymore. The only mechanical components still identifiable are bits of the suspension and the exhaust pipes.

Firefighters didn't worry about getting cancer when Tim Downes joined the Syracuse Fire Department in 1985. He'd wear a helmet and other gear caked in soot, carbon and other toxic residue from fires and think nothing of it. "You were supposed to be salty," he says. But in 2008 Downes was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, part of the body's germ fighting network. He suspects all the toxic chemicals he was exposed to in the line of duty may have caused his cancer. Downes went through 2 ½ years of treatment and is cancer-free today. That's why the retired firefighter helped organize a cancer screening program for city firefighters on Saturday, May 1. It will include a battery of nine different tests at Hematology-Oncology Associates of CNY at 5008 Brittonfield Parkway, East Syracuse. The tests will screen for lung, colorectal, prostate, kidney, bladder and thyroid cancers.

VIDEO: An ambulance ride, when you don't really need one, can be expensive for you. It also ties up crews that could be responding to life threatening emergencies. As part of our Show Me Your Bill project, Trouble Shooter Jaie Avila demonstrates how the San Antonio Fire Department is trying to reduce unnecessary ambulance runs. At the fire department call center, one sometimes two dispatchers are using new video call technology to see the patient and determine if they really need an ambulance. If your 911 call does not appear life threatening, you're quickly transferred to one of the special, clinical dispatchers, like paramedic Art Salazar. He sends the caller a link they can click on with their smart phone. Salazar sent the link to Jaie Avila so we could demonstrate how it allows him to see the patient right through their phone's camera. Through the video call the dispatcher can see how the person's skin looks and whether they're in distress.

A La Crosse fire station is now a historical landmark, throwing a wrench into the La Crosse Fire Department's redevelopment plans. Fire Station No. 4 has been standing at the corner of Gillette and Liberty Streets since 1940. It's the oldest active fire station in La Crosse, but demolition and reconstruction plans put it at risk until a historic preservation group stepped in. "It was back in late December, early January that we first heard that they were talking about demolishing Fire Station No. 4," Preservation Alliance of La Crosse President Barbara Kooiman said. "We were looking at what option we had to at least slow down the process so that there could at least be a conversation." The Preservation Alliance nominated the station for a historic landmark designation through the City's Heritage Preservation Commission.

States across the country are reporting large numbers of people getting their coronavirus shots, and according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 95 million doses have been administered over the last month alone. Regardless, the number of newly reported COVID-19 cases in the U.S. has not decreased dramatically, in fact, there is a seven-day average hovering around 60,000 cases a day, according to CDC data. But Dr. John Brownstein, an epidemiologist at Boston Children's Hospital and an ABC News contributor, said there is no immediate reason for alarm, since the country still has a ways to go before we see a major impact from the vaccines. "We're getting there," Brownstein said. "What's important to remember is we see these high level of metrics of vaccine coverage, there will be some level of variability from different parts of the country."
