DeKalb County: Rural fire chiefs say glitches in new radio system causing delays Fire chiefs from rural fire departments came to a 911 board meeting Wednesday to express their concerns about the new digital radio system installed by the sheriff's department, saying that they weren't receiving emergency calls. At the DeKalb County Emergency Telephone System Board meeting, Shabbona Fire Protection District Fire Chief Frank Ottengheime said his district has been having a hard time getting fire calls through since the new digital system went live Thursday. "We've not been able to get pages. We've been really late on calls," he said at the meeting Wednesday. "We can't talk back to the dispatchers, and the audio part of these calls is terrible." WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD Occupants displaced in Champaign townhome fire A kitchen fire displaced occupants of a Champaign townhome, authorities said. Firefighters said they responded at 8 p.m. to Unit A at 602 S. Duncan Road, where they found a stove fire had started to extend to the rest of the kitchen. Flames were quickly put out with a single hose line. An accidental fire started due to unattended cooking, crews said. There were no injuries. It's unclear Wednesday night exactly how many occupants were displaced. "The Champaign Fire Department reminds all citizens to stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food," firefighters said in a press release. "If you do have a cooking fire, get out and close the door behind you to help contain the fire." WAND-TV NBC CHANNEL 17 PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Topics covered include type of duty, cause and nature of injury, multiple fatality incidents, firefighter ages, time of injury, and incidents by state. U.S. FIRE ADMINISTRATION Firefighters union in New York concerned over staffing The Troy Firefighters Union is speaking out about concerns over the number of firefighters on shift at two of the fire stations in the city Eric Wisher, the President of the Troy Uniform Firefighters Association, said at the Bouton Road and Lansingburgh Stations when they get a medical call that means no one is then there to answer a fire call. "Medic two just went out on a call in the east side of the city with engine three," explained Wisher Tuesday night at the Bouton Road Station. "So this engine will be off duty for at least an hour while that ambulance is doing its call." Wisher said because they are at the medical call, no one is available to operate the engine or ladder at those stations. So if a fire were to happen right across the street from one of those two stations that means a crew from another station further away would have to respond. WNYT-TV NBC 13 Pennsylvania Fire Company Launches New Volunteer Recruitment Effort The Radnor Fire Company of Wayne (RFC), today announced the launch of a new recruiting website and direct mail campaign focused on helping boost the fire company's volunteer ranks, while also strongly communicating the many personal benefits and challenges offered by volunteering locally as a firefighter or ambulance member.
