Firefighters look for cause of south Bloomington fire that injured firefighter Firefighters are looking for the cause of a south Bloomington fire that injured a firefighter Wednesday morning. The house, located near Crestwicke Country Club, appeared to be a total loss. No other injuries were immediately reported. Owner Christopher McCammon was not at home when the fire was reported, but said his cat is unaccounted for. The firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries after a ceiling fell on him, said Bloomington Township Fire Department Chief Tom Willan. The two-story frame house at 8983 Blooming Grove Road is heavily damaged. The house is in the Crestwicke subdivision, east of U.S. 51; the back of the house faces the country club tennis courts. BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL PANTAGRAPH $9.3 million to go towards purchasing emergency vehicles in Illinois A total of 23 communities in Illinois will receive funding for new fire trucks, and 11 communities will get funds for new ambulances. Illinois State Fire Marshal Matt Perez and Illinois Finance Authority Executive Director Christopher Meister issued over $9.3 million in no interest or low interest loans to emergency responders across the state. The loans are made available through the Fire Truck Revolving Loan Program and Ambulance Revolving Loan Program. "Fire departments throughout Illinois face financial stressors that can make it difficult to properly equip and train their firefighters. These no and low interest loans allow departments to obtain vehicles they may not otherwise have been able to afford. This new equipment will help them serve their communities in a safer, more efficient and effective way," said State Fire Marshal Matt Perez. WAND-TV NBC CHANNEL 17 Major Fire Spreads Between Houses In Chicago's Back Of The Yards Neighborhood A fire broke out one house and spread to another Wednesday afternoon in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, and four people had to escape quickly. The fire broke out in a house at 4640 S. Paulina St. That house and the one to which it spread were destroyed, and two families were displaced. Chopper 2 was over the scene as flames raged on the roof and firefighters tried to put them out. CBS 2's Jermont Terry caught up with a man who escaped the fire. He said he had just arrived home from work, and he is glad he didn't lie down – because he was able to get out and save his life. Alvaro Sosa's normal routine after work is to relax and take a nap. But this time, while lounging in the basement unit, Sosa discovered the danger in the back of the house. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Fire destroys home in Keokuk PHOTOS: A family is without a home Thursday morning after a fire on 611 North 9th Street in Keokuk. Keokuk Assistant Fire Chief Pat McNally said they arrived on scene around 1:30 a.m. After seeing the home fully engulfed, all fire crews were called in because of heavy flames and smoke. Fire crews stayed on the scene to battle hot spots to prevent the fire from spreading to other homes. Crews wrapped up work around 6:15 a.m. There was a family with three children inside. Fire officials say everyone made it out safely but a family dog did not survive the fire. No injuries were reported. The home has significant smoke and fire damage to the siding and windows. McNally added the home is a total loss and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. WGEM-TV NBC/CW+/FOX 10 QUINCY Evanston Fire Department announces new smoke detector law The Evanston Fire Department and public health officials urged residents Tuesday to learn about the state's new smoke detector law, which requires residents to replace them by 2022. According to a Tuesday EFD release, EFD worked with the Illinois General Assembly to pass the law because of the number of deaths that occur in Illinois homes without smoke detectors. In 2018, 70 percent of the residential fire deaths were in homes without smoke detectors, the release said. The new law requires residents to install an alarm with a 10-year sealed battery by the end of 2022. "People often have a false sense of security when it comes to fire safety," state Rep. Robyn Gabel (D-Evanston) said in the release. THE DAILY NORTHWESTERN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

FOX NEWS Firefighters in New York fight security plan after drug scandal The city firefighters' union is fighting back against plans to install security cameras at all three of its firehouses in the wake of a drug-ring scandal. Middletown Firefighters Association Inc. Local 1027 filed an improper practice charge with the state Public Employment Relations Board on Oct. 21 against city hall for the soon-to-be-installed video surveillance cameras at the Central Firehouse on East Main Street, the Wallkill Street Station on Wallkill Avenue and the North Street Station. According to a copy of the complaint obtained by the Times Herald-Record, the union alleges the cameras were being installed without its consent and without prior negotiation. The union asked for a cease and desist order to prevent the city from moving forward with installing the cameras. TIMES HERALD-RECORD - METERED SITE How an Illinois firefighter's side hustle morphed into a flourishing coffee business Coffee has fueled Luke Schneider's career, which began in the U.S. Navy when he served as Damage Control 2nd Class Petty Officer, and continues to fuel his post at the Rockford, Illinois Fire Department. "I started drinking coffee when I was in the Navy working long hours and long shifts to stay awake," said Schneider. "Coffee was a necessity, and when I got out of the Navy, it was the same in the fire department. You drink a lot of coffee, and it's essential at every fire station." Coffee evolved from a necessity into a hobby, thanks to his wife, Emily. Schneider told FOX Business that the two of them would spend weekends venturing into different cafes tasting freshly roasted coffee. The couple shortly thereafter began roasting their own beans and gifting their blends to friends and family. Schnieder created his own "fire department blend" which sparked the idea for his company Fire Department Coffee. FOX BUSINESS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
