4 Firefighters, Off-duty Police Officer Injured When Fire Truck Crashes into Bank in Massachusetts Four firefighters and an off-duty Boston police officer were injured when a Boston Fire Department vehicle crashed into a bank less than a mile away from a fire scene early Thursday morning. The fire truck crashed into a Bank of America around 2:26 a.m. at the intersection of Talbot Avenue and Washington Street in Dorchester. A Jeep was also involved in the crash. Codman Square was temporarily shut down as a result of the accident scene and subsequent investigation. Boston police said the fire truck collided with another vehicle operated by an off-duty Boston police officer, who suffered life-threatening injuries. Four Boston firefighters who were in the fire truck were also taken to a local hospital but their injuries are not believed to be life threatening. Crews were battling a serious fire at Charlie's Pizza that caused an estimated $300,000 worth of damage. NECN-TV NBC 10 BOSTON Remains of missing LAFD firefighter found in Mexico The remains of Los Angeles firefighter Francisco "Frank" Aguilar, who went missing in Mexico in August, have been found after a monthslong investigation, officials announced Wednesday. The Baja California central state prosecutor said the badly burned body was found on Oct. 23 in a desolate field in Rosarito, according to Border Report, an online news source from KTLA parent company Nexstar. Officials were only able to confirm the identity Wednesday using forensic DNA testing. It's unclear what led authorities to the location of the body. Aguilar, a 20-year veteran of the Los Angeles Fire Department, had gone to Rosarito to check on a condo his family rents out when he disappeared. The 48-year-old traveled alone and was only planning for the trip to last a few days. "Our Department was notified this afternoon that authorities in Mexico determined that human remains recently found there are those of LAFD Firefighter/Paramedic Francisco Aguilar," said Chief Ralph Terrazas of the Los Angeles Fire Department. "This is a tragic outcome to a case we were hoping would end differently." KTLA-TV WB 5 LOS ANGELES Orthodox Jewish Community's All-Women EMS Service in New York Finally Gets First Ambulance Some call it controversial, others call it a life saver. In time for the onset of a second wave of the coronavirus, an all-women's EMS service in Brooklyn is finally getting an ambulance after overcoming naysayers in the city who tried to prevent it from happening. As CBS2's Lisa Rozner reported, 4-month-old Sarah Richter sleeps peacefully, even in the pouring rain. "She's a miracle. They are a miracle," her mother, Chani Richter, told Rozner. Richter was talking about the organization Ezras Nashim, which helped deliver her baby at home. "She came too fast, I had no labor, so I called Ezras Nashim, because they were on my speed dial," she said. "In two minutes flat, they turned my bathroom into a hospital room." Then, 911 had to be called to take the mother and baby to a hospital, and multiple first responders arrived. Richter only wishes then that the group had the $100,000 ambulance that just arrived. Donations helped purchase the ambulance and a $50,000 stretcher. WCBS-TV CBS 2 NEW YORK New Florida fire station includes special operations facility, built to withstand Category 4 hurricane winds The new Fire Station 8 facility was built on a site that had a doublewide trailer as a temporary station. The new, permanent main station has 14 bunk rooms, a kitchen and dining area, offices, an exercise room, a day room with chairs and a TV, a gear locker room and four garage bays. For the firefighters of Station 8, it goes beyond just a place to come to work. "It's definitely their home," says Raymaker. "It's a high-end residential, commercial project." The special operations building behind the main station has five bays for storing vehicles and equipment trailers. It also has workspace for servicing and maintaining equipment. The special operations crew gets called to the scene for vehicle extractions, confined space rescues, hazardous materials cleanups, high-angle rescues and other emergency situations. The fire station and special operations building are tough — built to withstand Category 4 hurricane winds. BUSINESS OBSERVER PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
