Chicago Fire Department's 1st Black female commissioner approved by City Council The Chicago Fire Department's first female Black commissioner was approved by City Council Wednesday morning. Mayor Lori Lightfoot nominated Annette Nance-Holt to serve in the position. The Council approved her about 11:40 a.m. Lightfoot nominated Nance-Holt last month at a graduation ceremony for the latest class of the Chicago Fire Department paramedics. She has been a trailblazer with the Chicago Fire Department during her three-decade career. "At a time when we still have work to do in order to eradicate the scourge of discrimination, racism, and sexism from the firefighter and other professions, Commissioner Nance's appointment couldn't come at a better time," Lightfoot said. It would be yet another barrier-busting achievement for Nance-Holt, who has overcome personal tragedy to reach the top spot in the Chicago Fire Department. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Three Kankakee County fire departments receive state grants Three Kankakee County fire departments will be able to upgrade equipment after recently being awarded state grant funding. The Bradley Fire Department and the Grant Park and Limestone Township fire protection districts submitted requests for the Small Equipment Grant Program, administered by the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal. The Small Equipment Grant Program was established by the state office to provide grants of up to $26,000 to support small firefighting and ambulance equipment purchases. A total of $3.3 million was awarded to 149 fire departments and EMS providers across the state through the program. "Having the right safety equipment is critical for first responders," State Sen. Patrick Joyce, D-Essex, said in a press release. DAILY JOURNAL - METERED SITE Peoria apartment fire causes $200K in damage Peoria firefighters were called just before 4 p.m. Wednesday to an apartment fire in the 5400 block of W. Hay Meadow Lane. Crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from the second floor of the building and the fire extending into the attic area. Fire Battalion Chief Scott Strum said the fire was under control in less than 30 minutes. A search of the building found no one inside. A Fire Investigator determined the cause of the fire was accidental. No injuries were reported. Crews remained on the scene for two hours extinguishing hot spots. Property management secured temporary housing for ten occupants. Damage was estimated at $200,000. WMBD-AM 1470 PEORIA Company Defends Use of Toxic Chemicals to Fight Rockton Plant Fire A company whose northern Illinois chemical plant was heavily damaged in a fire last week defended its use of firefighting foam containing toxic chemicals Wednesday, saying crews had taken steps to contain the material. An industrial team hired by Lubrizol Inc., parent company of Chemtool, used foam containing PFAS compounds June 15 before switching to another foam without them on orders of the fire chief in Rockton, a town near the Wisconsin border. State and federal regulators had raised concerns with the company about the PFAS-containing foam. It is legal in most of the U.S. but generally used only for highly flammable or combustible fires involving gas tankers and oil refineries, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The foam was used "in the early stages of firefighting efforts for a limited time given the heightened risk of letting the fire burn and spread," Lubrizol said in a statement Wednesday. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO Explosion, Fire Destroys House in Meredosia A house in Meredosia is a total loss after an apparent explosion inside the structure overnight. West Central Joint ETSB dispatch center received numerous emergency calls at approximately 7:35 pm regarding a house explosion and fire at 227 Orange Street, Meredosia. According to a report by Jacksonville-Morgan County Office of Emergency Management Director Phil McCarty, the home was believed to be unoccupied at the time of the explosion/fire. McCarty says emergency crews cleared the scene at approximately 1:00 this morning. The property at 227 Orange Street was a total loss and several homes in the immediate area sustained damage from the explosion/fire. No injuries were reported at the scene or reported as a result of the incident. WLDS-AM 1180 JACKSONVILLE Brookport Fire Department awarded grant The Office of the State Fire Marshal has awarded $26,000 to the Brookport Fire Department from the 2021 Small Equipment Grant Program. The grant provides funds for firefighting and ambulance equipment. Only 149 out of 448 applications submitted were awarded, and Brookport was one of the recipients. According to Brookport Fire Chief Bill Copley, the grant will go toward 14 sets of gear, which includes coats, pants and helmets. "The firefighting gear expires every 10 years," he explained. "They can withstand temperatures up to 1600 degrees. Other than the two sets recently purchased by the city, all of our equipment is past that limit. This grant will help tremendously for the safety of our volunteers and keep us in compliance with requirements." Through the program, a total of $3.3 million was awarded to fire departments/districts and EMS providers across the state. METROPOLIS PLANET PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

1 Dead, Massive Search and Rescue Effort After Partial Collapse of Florida Condo Building VIDEOS/PHOTOS: At least one person was killed and a massive search and rescue effort was underway for survivors following the partial collapse of a 12-story condominium building in Surfside early Thursday. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials said more than 80 units responded to the beachfront condo near 88th Street and Collins Avenue just north of Miami Beach around 2 a.m. The collapse sent a cloud of debris through the neighborhood, coating cars up to two blocks away with a light layer of dust. Footage from the scene showed a large section of the sea-view side of the building collapsed into a pile of rubble. Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett confirmed at least one person was killed in the collapse. It was unknown exactly how many people were injured or were inside the building at the time of the collapse but Burkett said at least 10 people were treated at the scene. WTVJ-TV NBC 6 MIAMI Related YouTube Video: Surveillance Video captures moment of Miami building collapse Virginia fireboat deployed to battle house fire for the first time since 2016 VIDEO: Virginia Beach investigators have not released the cause of a massive fire that destroyed a multi-million dollar home on McCullough Lane. Firefighters faced several challenges, including its remote location across the water from First Landing State Park. There are only two fire hydrants in that area. So, they had to use their fireboat to battle the flames. The Virginia Beach Fire Department has three fireboats including Fireboat One, which was the vessel that responded to Monday's fire. "A house fire off of fireboat is a very low-frequency occurrence. Just everything has to add up for that to even happen," said Fire Captain Joe Polozzi. Captain Polozzi was on the fireboat the night of the house fire. He explained what it's like when they are in that situation. "If we're docked up and there's a house on fire, we can run lines off of here and supply them just like a fire truck supply from the hydrant. We draft the water straight from where we are." WVEC-TV ABC 13 HAMPTON Mother-son firefighting duo team up in Tennessee PHOTOS: Tiffany Hyde has been an emergency room nurse for 31 years, almost 13 of those at Williamson Medical Center. She also taught nursing and emergency medical services (EMS) courses at Ravenwood High School for eight years. Seven years ago, Hyde, her husband and their son, Clark, moved to Arrington. For a Nashville native, moving to a country town was a big change, but it was an easier drive to her job. At the time, their daughter was in college and heading to law school, and Clark would be heading off to college soon. The Hydes saw the empty nest approaching. She began thinking it was time to give back to the community. An out-of-the-blue message from a former student provided an unexpected opportunity. "Joey Zaccarelli was in the first class I taught [at Ravenwood]," Hyde said. "After [Joey] graduated, he went to college and later became a volunteer firefighter at Arrington. He said he wanted to talk." WILLIAMSON HERALD Fire department in Indiana letting children be a firefighter for a day VIDEO: Some kids who say they want to be a firefighter when they grow up got to do just that this week. The Indianapolis Fire Department is hosting its Firefighter For a Day camp, offering children aged 7-12 a chance to get hands-on and learn new skills. The camp includes the opportunity to learn about CPR, hazardous materials at home, and more. "They're learning about hands on CPR, they're learning about the value of teamwork, they're learning about nutrition and they're even having fun while they're' doing it," said Aleatha Henderson, Captain and Director of Public Education at the Indianapolis Fire Department. "And the most important part, they're learning about what it's like to be a firefighter." Henderson said the children attending the camp take the lessons home along with a goodie bag filled with information that re-enforces what they learned at the camp. WXIN-TV FOX 59 INDIANAPOLIS Suspected serial arsonist in Nevada found with more than $50K in stolen firefighting equipment A man suspected of being a serial arsonist was arrested in Mound House while in the process of starting another fire. According to the Nevada Department of Public Safety (DPS), 29-year-old Kevin Critor from Dayton was arrested on June 21 in the area of Cash Drive and Carry Way in Mound House. In addition to the intentionally set fires, Critor was tied to multiple fire station burglaries across Washoe, Douglas and Lyon counties, according to DPS. When Critor was arrested, he was in possession of a stolen firefighter badge and gun. A search warrant of Critor's property found more than $50,000 in firefighting equipment, firefighting uniforms, firefighter identification cards and public safety radios. DPS said Critor also had a retired fire engine with operating emergency lights and sirens. Authorities said Critor would identify himself as a firefighter with no ties to a specific agency.
