Illinois EPA Says Firefighting Foam Used in Rockton May Have Contained ‘Chemicals of Concern' The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency says that a firefighting foam used as crews battled a fire at the Chemtool lubricant manufacturing facility in Rockton may have contained "chemicals of concern," and that crews have now switched to a different chemical to fight the blaze. Officials say that there is no indication that the "fluorinated foam" has impacted the nearby Rock River, but crews are working to conduct water quality testing of the river and area groundwater. "Visual inspections do not indicate any impacts to Rock River at this time," the EPA said in a statement. "Rock River does not serve as a drinking water source for Rockton and surrounding communities, and IEPA is conducting additional testing of the community water supply to ensure there was no contamination from the fire." WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO ‘A Nice Wake Up Call' After Fire Forces Apartment Residents Into Chicago Street Giant flames shot out from the roof of a Near North Side building Wednesday, forcing hundreds of people out of their apartments and into the street. As CBS 2's Brandon Merano reported Wednesday, there have been previous problems in the building. Before 11 a.m., flames shot from the roof at Bush Temple Apartments, at 108 W. Chicago Ave. in Chicago's River North neighborhood. "Yeah it was a nice wake up call. So I had to text my manager and tell him I was going to be offline for a little bit this morning," said resident A.J. Seltz. The fire happened in the apartment's patio area. "It was a rooftop couch area and I think the couches or something like that might have started on fire," Seltz said. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Marion to 'pay it forward' on fire trucks The Marion Fire Department's new ladder truck, authorized by the City Council in April, will be funded by a grant from the Harrison-Bruce Foundation, Public Health and Safety Commissioner John Barwick revealed on Monday night during his portion of the "State of the City." The 100-foot ladder truck has been ordered, and is expected to be delivered in 2022. Barwick thanked the Harrison-Bruce Foundation for its generosity. "We have been inspired and we are going to pay it forward," Barwick said. So, instead of selling the MFD's old ladder trucks, the city will donate them to neighboring fire districts. One, a 1986 backup ladder truck, is already in service with the Williamson County Fire Protection District. And the current ladder truck will go to Carterville, once the new aerial rig has been delivered. Barwick, whose departments also include Animal Control and the Marion Police Department. MARION REPUBLICAN Alton McDonalds blaze causes air-conditioning unit collapse through roof Shortly before 5:30 a.m. Thursday the Alton Fire Department received a report from a passerby of heavy smoke coming from the roof of the Downtown Alton McDonald's restaurant, at 717 E. Broadway. Heavy smoke was coming from an area near an air-conditioning unit at the rear of the building, where at least part of the unit collapsed through the roof into the restaurant's kitchen area. Firefighters fought the blaze from both inside and outside of the restaurant until the air-conditioning unit collapsed through the roof. Then all firefighters were pulled from the structure for safety. Firefighters used hoses through the McDonald's drive-up windows. The building has suffered extensive interior smoke damage and the restaurant will likely be closed for months. No injuries have been reported and no one was working or dining at the restaurant when firefighters arrived. ALTON TELEGRAPH Arson suspected in Steger-area apartment fire Authorities in Steger suspect a fire that caused residents to jump from their second and third-floor apartments Wednesday morning was intentionally lit. The fire broke out at the New Colonies Apartments and extra crews were called to help extinguish the flames. SkyCam9 flew over the scene, capturing smoke pouring from the building. Police officers assisted residents who jumped. First responders also helped other residents evacuate through the use of ladders and ground-level windows. No one was seriously injured, police added. The Red Cross is assisting tenants who were displaced. Steger Police Department and the State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating the cause of the blaze. WGN-TV 9 CHICAGO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Large fire burns at vehicle recycling business in South Carolina VIDEO: Firefighters are battling a large fire which broke out Wednesday afternoon at a Cherokee County vehicle recycling facility. The fire happened at Carguts just off Highway 5 near US-29 just east of Blacksburg. No injuries have been reported in the fire but one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. It is not known what caused the fire. Crews are also checking air quality in the area. Ten different fire agencies have responded to the scene with water tankers also being brought in to help. The Town of Blacksburg said water customers may experience low or no water pressure due to the large amount of water being used to extinguish the fire. WSPA-TV CBS 7 SPARTANBURG Fire Department Running Out Of Time To Save ‘Spirit Of Oklahoma' Fire Truck VIDEO: Thursday is the deadline to save the Spirit of Oklahoma fire truck. While the fundraiser is still thousands of dollars short, there is new, last-minute hope that the truck will be rescued. The truck symbolizes a bond between New York and Oklahoma firefighters after two terror attacks. If the Calera Fire Department can't come up with the money in time, a museum may step in to front the rest of the money, but there are no guarantees. The first page of the Spirit of Oklahoma fire truck's story was written 26 years ago - with the blood and tears shed by Oklahoma and New York City fire rescue crews in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City Bombing. Years later, a new chapter was written in the ashes of the September 11th attacks. KWTV-DT CBS 9 OKLAHOMA CITY 11-year-old raises $112K to buy CPR devices for four Michigan fire departments PHOTOS: Two years after creating a business plan with marker and construction paper, 11-year-old Lucas Vetter has raised $112,000 to purchase life-saving CPR machines for local fire departments. When Lucas was 9 years old, he visited Howell Area Fire Department with his family, which is where he first saw the LUCAS CPR device. LUCAS, which stands for Lund University Cardiac Assist System, is a machine that provides automatic chest compressions to a patient. The machines prevent strain on first responders and keep their hands free to help more people. Each device costs roughly $16,000, which is a barrier for smaller fire departments. "The lieutenant showed me the LUCAS device and told me how much they helped and how much they cost," Lucas said. "Then I thought, what if I could help get that for them?" LIVINGSTON DAILY Chief: Indiana apartment fire highlights weakness in building codes VIDEO: Fire officials say a massive apartment fire two months ago in Greenwood highlighted a weakness in Indiana building codes that they would like to see changed. The fire displaced 59 residents during the overnight hours and resulted in injuries to one civilian and one firefighter. Investigators determined the April 14 fire at the Meridian Oaks apartment originated on an outdoor, second floor balcony. While the exact cause is not known, it's believed that some kind of human error, possibly a cigarette butt or other discarded material, ignited the wooden balcony before the flames spread to vinyl siding on the building's exterior wall. "It went right up the vinyl siding," said White River Township Fire Chief, Jeremy Pell. "Behind that is a Styrofoam insulation, and from there it went into the attic. Fire grows more quickly if it has better fuel and vinyl siding and Styrofoam board is great fuel." Pell said the construction of the building was in line with Indiana building codes. WXIN-TV FOX 59 INDIANAPOLIS 7 years ago, rare twin tornadoes ripped apart Nebraska town VIDEO: Rare twin tornadoes barreled through the northeast Nebraska town of Pilger seven years ago today, killing two people, injuring 20 more and forever changing the lives of the nearly 350 people who called the town home. The storm destroyed or heavily damaged an estimated three-fourths of Pilger, including the middle school, Midwest Bank, the co-op, a convenience store, the post office, numerous houses, city hall, the firehouse and St. John Lutheran Church. The National Weather Service rated the larger tornado that tore through Pilger an EF4, capable of causing devastating damage with winds of 166 to 200 mph. The parallel twister was an EF2.
