Danville: Probationary firefighters realize lifelong dreams Becoming a Danville firefighter has been lifelong dreams for 22-year-old Madison Carlton and 25-year-old Branden Weidig. Both started as 13-year-old Lynch Fire Protection District cadets and the friends were sworn in on Wednesday as probationary firefighters with the Danville Fire Department. Firefighting runs in their blood. Carlton is the daughter of current Lynch fire chief Chuck Walls. Walls took over after Weidig's dad Scott, who passed away last year, retired in 2014. Carlton also has a firefighter brother; step mom, grandmother and sister who are auxiliary members and a grandfather who's a Lynch fire trustee. Carlton, an Oakwood High School graduate who had been working as a site coordinator in Oakwood for Project Success, and Weidig, a Danville High School graduate who had been working for Carle Arrow Ambulance, said they're excited about joining the fire department. DANVILLE COMMERCIAL NEWS Peoria Fire Department Dealing With Spate of Arson Fires The Peoria Fire Department has stayed busy this week, putting out fires set to businesses, homes, cars and dumpsters. At least 15 arson fires have been reported during the overnight hours this week. A vehicle was set on fire next to the Peoria County Parole office at 1115 N. North Street. The flames then spread to the building, causing about $65,000 in damage. Fire Chief Tony Ardis said they don't have evidence to suggest the parole office was a target. He said it could've just been a coincidence. "It could've just been it was a nice opportunity because the vehicle was sitting out, it was dark, right next to a building. We have no indication the intent was to do any harm specifically because of how that building is used," Ardis said. Ardis said there's no reason to believe the numerous arson fires this week connected - except by the emotions being felt in the wake of George Floyd's death. WCBU-FM PUBLIC RADIO Tanker Crash, Fire Blocks Lanes on I-355 in Glen Ellyn Lanes were blocked in both directions on Interstate 355 near west suburban Glen Ellyn early Wednesday as firefighters worked to extinguish a fire after a truck crash. A tanker truck carrying propane crashed just before 6 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-355 just north of Butterfield Road, according to Illinois State Police. The truck overturned and caught fire, state police said. The driver suffered minor injuries. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO Peoria man charged with attempted arson for trying to start gas station fire with flare A Peoria man was charged Wednesday with allegedly trying to start a fire at a gas station using a flare. Antonio D. Mabry, 28, of 2010 W. Proctor St., appeared in Peoria County Circuit Court on the the charges of attempted aggravated arson and attempted arson for the incident earlier that day at the Mobil gas station, located at 640 W. Main St., Prosecutor Dave Kenny said police were called to the area on a report from the owner that a man was on a bullhorn trying to incite a riot. He's then seen on surveillance footage, the prosecutor said, lighting a flare and trying to start a fire near a pump. He then allegedly threw the flare at the building but it went out and didn't cause any damage to the pump or the building, Kenny said in open court. Mabry was recognized by police and arrested a short time later at a relative's apartment. He declined to comment when questioned. PEORIA JOURNAL STAR - METERED SITE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

KCRA-TV NBC 3 SACRAMENTO What EMS can learn from the NASA/SpaceX mission and a return to space Five, four, three, two, One-Stop. Placing the emotional and upsetting events on the ground – the civil unrest across the country after the death of George Floyd – to one side for a moment, last weekend we placed two Americans into space from the U.S. mainland after a 9-year delay. After blasting off from the Kennedy Space Center and then whizzing around the Earth at speeds that eventually hit 17,500 mph, the SpaceX spacecraft carrying two NASA astronauts docked with the International Space Station, completing the first leg of a historic journey. The mission marks the first time a private company has flown astronauts to orbit and flight tested a vehicle that could truly take us onto a journey that will boldly go where no one has gone before. NASA Astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley sit at the tip of the pyramid of tens of thousands of workers – and, importantly, disrupters and innovators – who have delivered new space vehicles, innovation and technology across years of research and development. EMS1 Counties in Every State With the Highest Number of COVID-19 Cases More than 130 days have passed since the first known case of COVID-19 was identified in the United States. Over that period, nearly 1.8 million Americans have been infected — and over 100,000 of them have died. While no state has avoided the virus's reach, cases have been largely concentrated in densely-populated states in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. Still, in nearly every state — even in those where the number of known cases per capita has remained low — there are hotspots where the number of diagnosed cases per capita is approaching or well exceeding the national figure. As of June 1, there have been 554 cases of the virus for every 100,000 people nationwide. Using COVID-19 data from state and local health departments, and population data from the U.S. Census Bureau, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed COVID-19 cases in over 3,000 U.S. county and county equivalents to determine the county in each state with the most cumulative confirmed cases, adjusted to the population. In the counties on this list, the prevalence of the disease ranges from 73 cases to more than 14,000 cases per 100,000 people. 24/7 WALL STREET ATF National Response Team requested to help investigate business fires in Minnesota cities Members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) National Response Team have been sent to Minneapolis and St. Paul to investigate the fires set to local businesses during the recent unrest that took place in both cities. According to a spokesperson with the ATF St. Paul Field Division, they've been requested to work alongside both city's fire departments and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal Division to help determine the parties responsible for the fires. "The cause of these fires is quite obvious," Special Agent in Charge William Henderson, of the St. Paul Field Division said in a statement. "The task at hand now is to determine who is responsible. ATF's National Response Team is going to be a tremendous asset. It brings a wealth of knowledge and resources to assist local police and fire departments in large-scale fire investigations." KARE-TV NBC 11 MINNEAPOLIS ER visits for non-COVID emergencies have dropped 42% during the pandemic, CDC says The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that some people may be putting off getting emergency care for serious health conditions during the coronavirus pandemic -- and fewer visits for critical conditions could result in complications or even death. During the coronavirus pandemic, the total number of visits to hospital emergency departments across the United States for conditions other than COVID-19 was 42% lower than during this same time last year, according to a new CDC report. The new research, published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report on Wednesday, found that emergency department visits drastically fell from about 2.1 million visits per week between March 31 and April 27 last year to 1.2 million between March 29 and April 25 this year.
