Another Normal firefighter tests positive for COVID-19; 5 confirmed cases A Normal firefighter who had been in quarantine after exposure to COVID-19 has tested positive for the virus, bringing the department's total to five confirmed cases. "Since he was already in quarantine, there was no risk of any additional exposures related to his case," Normal Fire Department Public Information Officer Matt Swaney said Wednesday. Normal City Manager Pam Reece said Sunday that four Normal firefighters had tested positive for COVID-19 and 11 others were in quarantine. She said no citizens or patients had been placed at risk. The fifth firefighter's test results came back Tuesday, Swaney said. "Our ability to provide our services to the town has not been affected," Swaney said. "We are operating as usual." BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL PANTAGRAPH Mount Prospect police, fire departments striving to boost diversity Mount Prospect officials say they are working to promote diversity among the ranks of its firefighters and police officers. But thus far, progress has been slow. Among the efforts discussed at a village board committee-of-the-whole meeting Tuesday, Village Manager Michael Cassady said northwest suburban communities have worked with Harper College to develop a workshop for potential police officers. Police Chief John Koziol said the department also has tried to recruit from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. "We are pretty close to our population as far as diversity goes," he added, noting they have been particularly successful recruiting Latino officers. The department also is working to create a teen police academy at Prospect High School, Koziol said. ILLINOIS DAILY HERALD Streator City Council approves new promotion system for firefighters The Streator City Council approved a memorandum of understanding and settlement with Streator Firefighters Local 56 regarding promotions Wednesday. City management had rejected the previous practice, in which firefighters were ignoring the Streator Fire and Police Commission's merit-based promotional list and instead following a seniority-based system. City Manager David Plyman said during Tuesday's Committee of the Whole meeting that wasn't happening for every promotion. "By waiting their turn at promotion, all members would eventually have the opportunity to retire with rank, resulting in higher fire pension costs to city taxpayers," reads a memo from the City Council packet. THE TIMES Flash flooding in Peoria brings vehicle rescues and home damage Severe thunderstorms caused flash flooding in the Peoria area. Due to an extreme torrential downpour of rain late Wednesday afternoon, several people had to be rescued from their vehicles by firefighters. Water on Knoxville was reported to be over 3 feet high in depth in some areas. Fire Battalion Chief Steve Rada said several people had to be rescued from their vehicles after being overcome with water. "We had to send additional companies to different parts of Knoxville to get the people out of the water, so that they weren't in harms way. We also had calls on Ronald Road, W. Nebraska, Richard Allen, NE Adams, Shipman and Frye for the same thing," Rada said. Meanwhile, a partial building collapse of a residential home was reported on West Richwoods Blvd. "We estimate that a 30-foot wide by 8-foot tall section of the foundation had completely caved into the home," Rada said. WMBD-AM 1470 Serena Fire Department gets new training facility The Serena Fire Department is finally closing in on being able to use its new training facility after 10 years of planning and saving money. The department, which boasts about 40 volunteer members in the district that covers 130 square miles, already has a building in Serena air pack training, but the new facility – built just north of its substation in Norway – will allow firefighters to train for dozens of other situations they may encounter on a fire call. The training facility was funded completely by donations from many businesses and residents within the district. "It was just the money ... it took a long time to raise it," Serena Fire Chief Steve Kellogg said of the decade-long project that cost $228,000. "We didn't want to use any tax money for this. New York police, firefighter, correction unions sue to block release of some disciplinary records Police, firefighter and correction officers unions have asked a judge to block the release of officers' disciplinary records in cases where claims against them are unsubstantiated following Albany's repeal 50-A law, according to new court papers. The some 60,000 officers who are represented in the lawsuit, claim that when the records concerning officers disciplinary matters are released beginning as early as Wednesday, they will also include non-final and unsubstantiated allegations. The unproven allegations cannot be allowed to be publicized in an internet "data dump" because it will "absolutely destroy the reputation and privacy — and imperil the safety — of many of those firefighters and officers," the Manhattan lawsuit from late Tuesday alleges. The so-called 50-a law — which previously prevented officers disciplinary records from being publicly released — was overturned in a wave of reform sparked by the May 25 police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. NEW YORK POST EMS officials mark 50th anniversary of 1st paramedic act EMS agencies and officials are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the nation's first paramedic act, signed in California on July 15, 1970. The Wedworth-Townsend Act, signed by then-Gov. Ronald Reagan 50 years ago on Wednesday, legally recognized the practice of paramedicine and protected paramedics administering intensive prehospital care in the state, the California Ambulance Association and National EMS Museum recounted in a news release marking the anniversary. Los Angeles Doctors Walter Graf and J. Michael Criley were the first to train paramedics in the state to deliver pre-hospital care to heart attack patients without direct physician intervention, treating and transporting them in mobile coronary care units and increasing survival rates. Criley and Graf partnered with Los Angeles County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn to address the risks of performing intensive care across jurisdictions and operational boundaries, leading to the drafting of the paramedic act. EMS1 Interactive map shows risk of encountering COVID-19 at events of different sizes across the country A new tool developed by Georgia Tech allows people to look up their risk of encountering COVID-19 at event, based on the county they live in. The interactive map allows users to choose a county anywhere in the United States, choose the event size (anywhere from 10 people to 10,000), and then calculate the risk that at least one COVID-19 positive person will be present. For example, in Marion County, the tool calculates that at a 100-person event, there is an 58% chance that someone in attendance will be COVID-positive. At a gathering with only 10 people, that risk goes down to 8%. In Warren County on the state's western border, the risk level is less than 1% at a gathering with 100 people in attendance. Alternatively, the risk is 97% in two Indiana counties: Elkhart and Marshall. The interactive map is based on data from The COVID Tracking Project at The Atlantic, which pulls daily data on COVID-19 testing and patients from all 50 states. It's also based on 2019 U.S. Census data. WTHR-TV NBC 13 INDIANAPOLIS Thermal camera demonstrates how dangerous hot cars are for children VIDEO: More than 50 children in the U.S. died from heatstroke after being left in hot cars last year. Rising temperatures during the summer are one reason why parents must be more alert than ever when driving with children in the back seat. "It doesn't take as long as you think it will to build up to a dangerous situation inside a car," said Gulfport Fire Chief Mike Beyerstedt. "It's terribly dangerous for young children. Most of the heat increase takes place in the first half hour." That rise in temperature is called the greenhouse effect. The fire department used a thermal imaging camera to demonstrate on a WLOX News car. At the time of the test, the temperature in Gulfport was 90 degrees. "112 (degrees) just shooting at the window here on the outside of the car," said firefighter Lt. Tim Ishee, pointing the thermal imaging camera at the vehicle. "That's just the residual heat coming off of the car." WLOX-TV ABC/CBS 13 BILOXI First Lady Melania Trump Visits Washington D.C.
