Mattoon fire protection service insurance rating improves The City of Mattoon's insurance rating for fire protection service recently improved, a change that could yield lower insurance premiums for some property owners. Fire Chief Jeff Hilligoss said the Insurance Services Office (ISO) issues these ratings for how well protected communities are by their fire departments. Insurance companies then use that score to help set property insurance rates, although the impact on homeowner insurance policies varies by insurer. An ISO fire insurance rating is scored on a range of 1-10, with lower numbers meaning better ratings. There are four main criteria for for score: 50 percent from the quality of the fire department, 40 percent from the availability of water supply, 10 percent from the quality of the local 911 system, and an extra 5.5 percent from fire prevention programs. MATTOON JOURNAL GAZETTE & TIMES-COURIER 4 homes catch fire on Chicago's Northwest Side Four homes and a coach house caught fire on Chicago's Northwest Side Wednesday. The fire started in the 2400 block of North Mason in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood at around 2 p.m. Massive flames and thick black smoke poured from the residential block, as firefighters on ladders attacked the blaze. Chicago Fire Department officials said one firefighter is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported in the blaze. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO New chief has family history, long work experience with Mattoon Fire Department The new chief, Jeff Hilligoss, who is helping guide the future of the Mattoon Fire Department has a long family and professional history with this organization. Hilligoss said he was introduced to the Mattoon Fire Department at a young age by his grandfather, firefighter Lloyd Ring, who brought him to the station and let him check out the fire trucks there. "I have been around this department my entire life," Hilligoss said. He noted that his uncle, Bob Bales, was also a Mattoon firefighter. In 1995, Hilligoss began pursuing his own career in firefighting when he became a volunteer with the Lincoln Fire Protection District. Hilligoss ended up serving as a volunteer firefighter for 25 years with Lincoln Fire and was eventually named chief of this district's Old State Road station in rural Mattoon, a position he held until recently. MATTOON JOURNAL GAZETTE & TIMES-COURIER Garage catches fire at home owned by New Life Pregnancy Center in Decatur Firefighters battled a garage fire Wednesday in Decatur. Firefighters said they responded at 4:26 p.m. to 1051 W. Mound Road, where they found fire coming through the roof of a three-car garage. The garage was attached to a large 2.5 story residence located at the end of a long lane. Responders said the home was under renovation in recent weeks and is owned by New Life Pregnancy Center. Firefighters cleared the area at 7:03 p.m. Wednesday. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR Barrington Countryside fire district trying again for new station off Hough Street The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District is making a second try at building a new station that officials say is needed to improve service to the district's east side. Fire Chief James Kreher said the proposal for a roughly 5-acre site at 1004 S. Hough St. is part of the district's longtime desire for a third station that would benefit residents in Inverness and nearby areas. The land is in unincorporated Cook County just outside Barrington. "We're going to try to make it fit in the neighborhood," Kreher said Wednesday. "It's on a main road where we can get to the eastern part of our district much quicker and it also helps us assist with the northern part of our district and the southern part of our district." Before construction can occur, Barrington Countryside must go through a county approval process, starting with a zoning board of appeals online public hearing at 10 a.m. July 8. Firefighters respond when building with many violations collapses in Brooklyn; 1 injury reported Cleanup was underway Thursday at a multistory health club shuttered by the coronavirus pandemic that collapsed into a heap of rubble in Brooklyn a day earlier. Videos posted on Citizen app show FDNY trucks, an ambulance, and numerous police officers and other first responders near a pile of rubble and debris where the three-story building in Carroll Gardens used to stand at the corner of Court Street and Union Street. The FDNY said that the call came in around 4:38 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they encountered a man who said he had escaped from the second floor of the building just before it came crashing down. The man was taken to an area hospital in stable condition. There was no indication of an explosion, added FDNY officials. The building is home to a gym, according to a check of the address. The facility, called Body Elite Gym, posted online on June 12 that the building was undergoing repairs while it remained closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. WNYW-TV FOX 5 NEW YORK US Department of Commerce Awards $1 Million for R2 Network, Selects Team to Build Network for Innovation in Disaster Response & Resiliency Technology Three U.S. Department of Commerce agencies, the Economic Development Administration (EDA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet Authority), announced the awardee of the Accelerate R2 Network (R2 Network) Challenge. U.S. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADMINISTRATION Officials: Alabama students throwing 'COVID parties' to see who gets infected Students in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 have been attending parties in the city and surrounding area as part of a disturbing contest to see who can catch the virus first, a city council member told ABC News on Wednesday. Tuscaloosa City Councilor Sonya McKinstry said students have been organizing "COVID parties" as a game to intentionally infect each other with the contagion that has killed more than 127,000 people in the United States. She said she recently learned of the behavior and informed the city council of the parties occurring in the city. She said the organizers of the parties are purposely inviting guests who have COVID-19. "They put money in a pot and they try to get COVID. Whoever gets COVID first gets the pot. It makes no sense," McKinstry said. "They're intentionally doing it." Tuscaloosa Fire Chief Randy Smith told the City Council on Tuesday that he has confirmed the students' careless behavior. ABC NEWS Green, Yellow, Orange Or Red? This New Tool Shows COVID-19 Risk In Your County How severe is the spread of COVID-19 in your community? If you're confused, you're not alone. Though state and local dashboards provide lots of numbers, from case counts to deaths, it's often unclear how to interpret them — and hard to compare them to other places. "There hasn't been a unified, national approach to communicating risk, says Danielle Allen, a professor and director of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University. "That's made it harder for people," she says. Allen, along with researchers at the Harvard Global Health Institute, is leading a collaboration of top scientists at institutions around the country who have joined forces to create a unified set of metrics, including a shared definition of risk levels — and tools for communities to fight the coronavirus. The collaboration launched these tools Wednesday, including a new, online risk-assessment map that allows people to check the state or the county where they live and see a COVID-19 risk rating of green, yellow, orange or red. NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO Nearly 400,000 vehicles on the road could catch fire and there is no fix for the problem VIDEO: Nearly 400,000 Nissan vehicles on the road right now could catch fire. Nissan has issued multiple recalls about the problem, impacting some Muranos, Maximas, Infinitis and Pathfinders, but the company has no fix for the defect that has burned down vehicles, homes and even caught a car dealership on fire. Drivers whose Nissans have gone up in flames said the carmaker ignored them and took no responsibility for the fires. "It smelled like plastic burning, and I just thought I probably shouldn't drive it home, even though my house was close by," explained Ellen Erwin. She said she parked her 2016 Nissan Murano at the community mailboxes in her Texas City neighborhood and started walking home after her ABS light came on. "Within a couple of minutes, it was engulfed in flames," she said. Ellen and her husband, Julian, said they didn't know the SUV was under recall. They said they did not receive the recall notice that Nissan claims it sent in December 2019. Even if they had, Nissan said there is still no fix for the problem that could cause the fires in 394,000 vehicles. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
