| Firefighters receive grain bin rescue training at Towanda Fire Department VIDEO: Being trapped inside a grain bin is a real-life nightmare scenario, but with yearly training, firefighters can be better prepared if a farming disaster were to happen in their communities. Towanda, Gridley, Hudson, and Lexington firefighters gathered at the Towanda Fire Department to receive training from the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS). The training was in two parts, a lecture presentation and a practice rescue situation. The practice rescue situation involved one firefighter trapped in a grain bin, filled with grain up to their waist. Two other firefighters were tasked with rescuing him, which involved using a metal wall called a "rescue tube". Then the trapped person held on to a pole and lifted themselves out of the grain. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA New upgrades coming to Westville Fire Protection District After years of applying for grants, the Westville Fire Protection District is now ready to upgrade its equipment. Last week, they were awarded more than $190,000 from FEMA. As Westville Fire Chief Mark Ames is preparing to find some new equipment, he views it's time to get rid of the old and bring in the new. "The grant that we received is to replace our air packs," Mark Ames, the Westville Fire Chief, said. "They're coming on to about 18 years old." The FEMA grant was worth more than $190,000 and the department will match five percent of that, bringing the total to more than $200,000. They'll have enough to supply new tanks, new packs and new masks. Ames said replacements are recommended after 15 years. Assistant Fire Chief Matt Shuey says they've been lucky the equipment hasn't broken down while they've been out in the field. WCIA-TV CBS 3 CHAMPAIGN Nursing home fire in Westmont elicits large emergency response, firefighters extinguish blaze Firefighters extinguished a structure fire early Wednesday morning at a nursing home in Chicago's western suburbs. Fire officials say Westmont emergency services were dispatched to Westmont Manor Nursing Home, a two-story building at 512 East Ogden Avenue, in response to a fire alarm just after 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. The westbound lanes of E. Ogden Ave., on the edge of Westmont and Downers Grove, were shut down while crews responded. According to fire officials, the call was elevated to a structure fire while crews were en route, and upon arrival it was determined that the fire originated in a second-floor residential unit. Firefighters immediately turned hoses on the second floor to knock down the main part of the fire, say fire officials, while additional crews began search-and-rescue operations. | Flooded New York firehouse doesn't stop firefighters during storm VIDEO: Firefighters in Port Jefferson battled heavy rains to get people to safety earlier this week - all while its own firehouse was flooded. Screenshots shared to Facebook show submerged gear and equipment, estimated to be thousands of dollars in damages. The department tells News 12 that at no point was its ability to answer emergency calls impacted, and the cleanup process is already underway. Fire department members say they believe it will be complete by Thursday. The fire department says it answered 25 calls Sunday night into Monday morning during the height of the storm. It was a normal training exercise for the Lexington Fire Department on October 22, 2016. Several dive teams spent the day removing vehicles from the Kentucky River off Old Tates Creek Road near Valley View Ferry. After crews were all packed up, one firefighter noticed something sticking out of the water. "One of my guys comes over and says 'hey what is this?' And I walk over to the edge of the water and there's a human bone laying there," District Chief Christopher Warren recalls with the Lexington Fire Department Station 2.
