A day after a fire decimated a west suburban restaurant, the Franklin Park Fire Department (FPFD) revealed two firefighters were hospitalized, two people were rescued, and what caused the fire in the first place Wednesday. FPFD officials said an aggressive initial response from local firefighters helped contain the blaze to the upper levels of Sneaker's Sports Bar and Grill on Grand Avenue in Franklin Park, and after several hours of fighting the fire, the blaze was extinguished. During efforts to contain the fire, FPFD officials said two people were found trapped on the roof of the building, and firefighters were able to rescue them with the use of ground ladders on arrival. Two firefighters from FPFD's initial response were taken to a local hospital with heat exhaustion, where they continue to recover from their injuries. WGN-TV 9 CHICAGO Deputy Chief Daniel Osman retired from the Aurora Fire Department July 26 after more than 27 years of service. Osman worked as a paramedic for the majority of his career and also served on the Local 99 Union Board. He led the department's participation in the annual food and toy drives and took part in many community events. "The Aurora Fire Department congratulates Deputy Chief Osman and wishes him the best in his retirement," officials wrote in a news release. Seven people were promoted following Osman's retirement. Assistant Chief of Operations Kevin Nickel is now serving as deputy fire chief, effective July 27. Nickel, who has worked at the fire department since 2001, was unanimously sworn into the role July 23 by City Council members. AURORA PATCH |

VIDEO: Home surveillance video from a Tulsa living room shows a dog chewing on a power bank with a lithium-ion battery inside. Suddenly, there is a flash, and a fire breaks out within minutes, leaving the two dogs and a cat in danger. "The thing that's important about this situation is how fast you see this fire progress," said Andy Little with the Tulsa Fire Department. "It begins at the top, those heated gases rise, and then, they slowly lower, and you can actually see the whole apartment darken down and then things start combusting in the house." Andy Little with the Tulsa Fire Department said what happened May 1st at that home could happen anywhere, and battery-related fires are more common. "What we know is that lithium-ion batteries, if their housing is damaged, they're exposed to extreme heat, or they somehow rupture, they can cause toxic gases, they can create fires and even explosions," said Little. KOTV-DT CBS 6 TULSA VIDEO: Outside the track of the AAU Junior Olympics in Greensboro, a beige tent is there for young athletes or spectators in need of medical attention. The tent is Guilford County Emergency Medical Services' new EMS Medical Tent. Staffed with 12 personnel and stocked with everything found in an ambulance, Guilford County EMS says it's prepared to take on what the AAU Junior Olympics may throw its way. At athletic events such as the AAU Junior Olympics, Guilford County EMS says it most often sees issues such as dehydration and minor musculoskeletal issues. It also has the ability to treat minor scrapes and bruises. The staff includes paramedics and emergency medical technicians, some of whom ride around the venues on bikes and ATVs with their equipment. WXII-TV NBC 12 WINSTON-SALEM VIDEO/PHOTOS: A ‘medical emergency' caused a crash in Dandridge Wednesday morning after a firefighter passed out while driving. Dandridge Fire Chief Andy Riley shared that the driver and a lieutenant with the Dandridge Fire Department were out around 10:30 a.m. to do a weekly check of the department's fire boat in Douglas Lake when the driver passed out behind the wheel. The lieutenant grabbed the wheel and attempted to stop the truck, which was towing the boat on Gay Street, but the command truck crashed into a passenger van, another car, and the Jefferson County Finance Building. According to a Tennessee Highway Patrol Preliminary report, both the car and van that were struck were unoccupied at the time. WATE-TV ABC 6 KNOXVILLE San Francisco voters will decide in November whether to lower the retirement age from 58 to 55 for the city's firefighters, who risk cancer and death as part of their job. If more than half of voters on the Nov. 5 ballot approve the amendment to the city charter, members of the San Francisco Fire Department hired after Jan. 6, 2012, would secure more retirement benefits at an earlier age. Supervisor Catherine Stefani -- one of the supervisors who sought to tack the measure onto the ballot -- saw the measure as much-needed protection for firefighters. "I sponsored this charter amendment for a simple reason: We can and must do better to address the unacceptable cancer rates of our brave members of the fire department," she said during the board's regular meeting Tuesday.
