River Grove Firefighter Dies Of Stroke After Recovering From COVID-19 The Chicago area has lost another first responder. River Grove firefighter Robert "David" Reisinger had recently recovered from COVID-19, but he then had a fatal stroke. The River Grove Fire Department said Reisinger had been a dedicated village employee since 2002, and was also a retired EMS coordinator for Stroger Hospital of Cook County. "His job of protecting the public, not only through firefighting but the constant threat of the COVID-19 has taken its ultimate toll," the River Grove Fire Department said on Facebook. "Our fire house is like family and this is a tragedy that has affected our entire village. We extend our heartfelt sorrow to his family and loved ones." Black and purple bunting were draped outside Reisinger's firehouse in River Grove Wednesday night. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Some Chicago Firefighters To Be Tested For COVID-19 Before And After Work Some Chicago firefighters and paramedics will now be tested for coronavirus before and after work. CBS 2 Political Investigator Dana Kozlov uncovered that new step, and testing will be done at specific firehouses. It begins Thursday at two firehouses. At least nine Chicago Fire Department members who work at the firehouse at 71st and Parnell have tested positive for COVID-19, and there may be more. "Hot" houses like that one are prompting the city and CFD to start shift change testing for the illness as a way to keep it from spreading as department cases keep rising. "I just got off the phone with the city, and they said that the fastest these results could be back in three or four days, and if they are hot, they're going to be ordered to stay home," said Firefighter Local 2 President Jim Tracy. He said several firehouses fit the "hot" criteria, including those at O'Hare and Midway. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Chicago Police Officer Stabbed at Scene of Avondale Fire A Chicago police officer was stabbed by someone who allegedly started a fire Wednesday in Avondale on the Northwest Side. Police and fire crews were called about 4:45 p.m. for reports of the fire in the 3100 block of North Spaulding Avenue, according to Chicago police. When they arrived, a female started arguing with officers and firefighters. The female, who started the fire in the basement of the building, stabbed an officer in the leg, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. The officer was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center with a non-life threatening injury to the lower right calf, officials said. The attacker was taken into custody and charges are pending, according to police. The small fire was put out shortly after crews arrived, Langford said. No other injuries were reported. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO Illinois using decontamination system that can clean thousands of N95 masks in 24 hours The state of Illinois is turning to a new decontamination system that can clean thousands of N95 masks in just 24 hours. The move will help protect healthcare workers while cutting down on PPE waste. Governor JB Pritzker says they have distributed nearly 20 million pieces of PPE during the coronavirus pandemic, and so the decontamination system -- located in Waukegan -- is meant to sanitize N95 masks sent in from state healthcare workers and first responders. "After being exposed to what's called vaporize hydrogen peroxide, those masks can come out clean and ready for use again," said Justin Sanchez of the Battelle Memorial Institute. Sanchez is with the company behind the technology. "You can put about 10,000 masks in each one of those boxes at a time. And then, let's say you run it over two shifts, you can get to like 80,000 total masks if you truly wanted to run it at full capacity," he said. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO Illinois State University's Milner Library 3D printing personal protective equipment for local health professionals Illinois State University's Milner Library is making personal protective equipment for first responders and local health officials. Milner Library's Digital Media Specialist Steve Koehler has been using the library's 3D printer to make face masks. Koehler was inspired after he saw an article about 3D printers being used to make personal protective equipment in Italy. Koehler has been using both his own personal 3D printer and the libraries to increase his output. Library Information Technology Director Paul Unsbee contacted other Illinois State University departments with 3D printers to expand their efforts. ISU's combined efforts managed to produce over 500 pieces of personal protective equipment. All completed equipment is sent to the McLean County Emergency Management Agency to be distributed to healthcare workers in need. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Dozen fire trucks mothballed amid drop in Las Vegas Strip emergency calls The Clark County Fire Department is parking a dozen trucks because of a drastic reduction in emergency calls on the Strip, which was closed last month in response to the coronavirus pandemic, officials said. The crews of those units are being reassigned to other areas, and nobody is being laid off, officials said. Units taken out of rotation include five rescue units, four engine companies, one ladder truck, one rescue squad and one battalion chief, officials said. "The majority of these units are in the resort corridor and are usually among the busiest in the country," Fire Chief John Steinbeck said. "The drop in visitor volume has caused service demand to fall significantly in these areas." Steinbeck said the situation was "very fluid" and that "a unit that makes sense to temporarily shut down this week may very well not make sense next week." LAS VEGAS SUN New York: Antibody testing hints at coronavirus' hellish toll on FDNY/EMS, NYPD Nearly 20 percent of FDNY/EMS members and over 10 percent of NYPD cops screened for coronavirus antibodies tested positive, Gov. Andrew Cuomo revealed Wednesday, as the state death toll crept towards 18,000. The results came in days after Cuomo announced that 1,000 members from each department would be tested for antibodies, which would indicate that their immune systems battled the bug at some point. Of those screened, some 17.1 percent of FDNY/EMS members tested positive, the governor said. "We believe that's because the EMT number is driving it up," said Cuomo. "They are the frontline." Within the hard-hit NYPD — which has about 55,000 uniformed and civilian employees in total — 10.5 percent of tests came back positive, Cuomo said. NEW YORK POST ‘Unprecedented' contact tracing efforts take shape to contain coronavirus in Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee has called for a "rapid-response" contact tracing effort as part of his plan for the gradual reopening of Washington state, likening it to "something like a fire brigade." Contact tracing is a method by which public health officials identify individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 and track down anyone they may have been in contact with. These contacts are then informed and tested themselves; those who test positive are recommended to self-quarantine for two weeks to prevent further spread of the virus. Individual tracing has previously been used for other disease outbreaks such as tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases. "It definitely has been successful in prior outbreaks and it's used routinely for public health," Dr. Janet Baseman of the School of Public Health said of the practice. When the first case of the virus arrived in King County in late February, early contact tracing efforts were activated, according to Baseman, who led a group of students to aid the measures. THE DAILY How a team of NASA engineers developed a ventilator for COVID-19 patients in just a month VIDEO: Working as an engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, David Van Buren usually spends his time designing and building instruments for space telescopes or robots that will explore other worlds in our Solar System. But for the last month, Van Buren and a group of his colleagues at JPL have been working on a project that is truly unexplored terrain for them: making a ventilator to help patients sick with COVID-19. While Van Buren had some previous experience in medical engineering, he'd never designed a ventilator before. But he and his co-workers at JPL are used to making things they don't have any experience making. In fact, they're used to making things that no one has experience making. "When a scientist comes to us and says they want to go to a moon of Jupiter and drill into the ice and see what's underneath, that's something that's never been done before," Van Buren tells The Verge. THE VERGE VIDEO: Fleet of drones display support for healthcare workers and first responders in Pennsylvania Stunning footage shows a fleet of around 150 drones near Franklin Field in University City creating incredible displays in support of healthcare workers and first responders on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company behind it is called Verge Aero, which is based out of the University of Pennsylvania. The video was taken Tuesday night by a member of the Philadelphia Second Alarmers who was on duty when she recorded it. People around the country have been coming together to show their support for front line workers. WTXF-TV FOX 29 PHILADELPHIA PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
