Alton firefighters, paramedics now ordered to mask-up on calls Alton firefighters responding to a fire alarm sounding at a residential group home in Alton were wearing their N95 masks Wednesday to protect the public and to protect themselves from exposure to the COVID-19 virus. All firefighters were instructed Tuesday to begin wearing their N95 masks anytime they exit a vehicle to make contact with the public. Prior to that, only paramedic/firefighters were wearing them and then only under specific criteria. Alton firefighters, paramedics and police officers are seen in N-95 protective masks as they work the scene of a single-car traffic crash Tuesday evening at the intersection of Garden and Putnam streets in Alton. At least one person was taken from the scene via ambulance when a Chevy Malibu struck a pole, taking out power for at least 15 neighborhood households for about two hours. EDWARDSVILLE INTELLIGENCER Facing Threat of Virus, Chicago's First Responders Busy as Ever While most Chicago residents are staying home to avoid contracting or spreading COVID-19, the city's first responders are as busy as ever. They're among the essential workers who continue to work during the pandemic, and they've been hit hard. On Tuesday evening, the Chicago Fire Department lost its first member to the coronavirus: Mario Araujo, 49, died from complications of COVID-19 after serving on the force for 17 years. Last week, Chicago police Officer Marco DiFranco died from the coronavirus. It's considered a death in the line of duty, meaning his family is eligible for full benefits The Chicago Police Department says 134 members have officially tested positive for COVID-19; another 46 members say they have tested positive but they haven't been officially tested by the CPD. WTTW-TV CHICAGO PUBLIC TV NIU donates PPE to DeKalb Fire Department to help fight COVID-19 The Northern Illinois University College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) donated several dozen boxes of personal protective equipment to the DeKalb Fire Department Monday to help prepare the community to battle the COVID-19 pandemic. CHHS donated exam gloves in all sizes, isolation gowns, safety goggles, adult and pediatric surgical masks, and N95 masks. "This will literally save citizens and us from being exposed to (COVID-19). We are that much more prepared for when the wave hits us," said Bart Gilmore, deputy chief of the DeKalb Fire Department. Because the COVID-19 is new, first responders are taking extra precaution. Often, that means entire crews must wear complete protective gear when responding to calls – even those that are not initially thought to be COVID-19-related. NIU TODAY Newton's disinfects Danville police, fire vehicles The vehicles and fire trucks at several area law enforcement agencies and fire departments are cleaner and safer for first responders thanks to the efforts of a longtime Danville business. Since late last week, Newton's Cleaning & Restoration has been donating their services to the Danville Police Department, Danville Fire Department, Tilton and Oakwood police departments and the Oakwood Area and Tilton fire protection districts by disinfecting their fleets of vehicles and trucks. "We want to protect Vermilion County," Erin Forsyth, Newton's business development consultant, said. "We all live and work here, so we want to keep everyone safe. "Businesses have a lot of challenges now, so we thought about what we could do to keep our employees working and help our community at the same time," she said. DANVILLE COMMERCIAL NEWS Dinges Fire Company in Amboy provides protective gear to fire and EMS In response to the need as Illinois and the nation deals with COVID-19, Dinges Fire Company, a locally owned business in Amboy that sells fire, EMS and rescue equipment all across the Midwest, is "paying it forward" to local organizations and businesses during COVID-19 while also striving to source and deliver much needed PPE to healthcare systems across the Midwest. Inside look at how Indiana fire stations sterilize against COVID-19 contamination VIDEO: As first responders take precautions against COVID-19 contamination, those efforts include extensive measures to sterilize fire stations and equipment. Crew members from Express 911 Board Up spent several hours Wednesday using different methods to sterilize the White River Township Department headquarters in Greenwood. Express Restoration President Robert Turner explained how ozone gas is used to disinfect fire and ambulance equipment inside an enclosed trailer parked outside. "We've got an EPA registered device that produces ozone gas that we're going to enclose all of the equipment in this trailer," Turner explained. "We'll let it run for 15 minutes, which will then disinfect all of the contents inside." Chief Jeremy Pell said sterilizing gear and equipment is a vital step every time firefighters return from an emergency call. WXIN-TV FOX 59 INDIANAPOLIS Virginia first responders now using plastic tents to protect patients and providers As the coronavirus crisis intensifies, first responders continue making changes to protect both patients and themselves. Emergency medical service crews in the cities of Roanoke and Salem, as well as Botetourt County, are now using protective tents on patients who need oxygen. The mini-isolettes help contain respiratory droplets that could carry the coronavirus within the plastic. This is not a new procedure, but it's not typical. "We've had to figure out how can we continue doing these treatments that people need that are less invasive and more beneficial to a patient but keep our providers safe, keep the environment cleaner," said Jason Crouch, EMS operations captain for Roanoke Fire-EMS. First responders are also using masks, limiting the number of providers interacting with patients, doing health screenings before coming into work and increasing cleaning. WSLS-TV NBC 10 ROANOKE Stanford Medicine teams up with Apple to release an app that connects California first responders to drive-through COVID-19 tests A new app from Stanford Medicine built with Apple's help will help connect firefighters, police officers and paramedics in California to drive-through COVID-19 testing if they are showing symptoms of the coronavirus. Here's how it works: Users take a survey with questions about their symptoms. If they have symptoms suggesting COVID-19 infection, the app recommends testing. First responders can take that result to the contact at their workplace in charge of health, referred to as a "department infection control officer" inside the app, and get scheduled for priority testing at a Stanford Health Care site. The First Responder COVID-19 Guide app is one of several new technology initiatives to connect people at high-risk for COVID-19 infection with testing. CNBC This is how DC Fire and EMS decontaminates ambulances after COVID-19 calls VIDEO: As confirmed coronavirus cases within DC Fire and EMS continue to climb, the department is taking new steps to protect its firefighters and paramedics on the front lines. That means ambulances and crews must undergo a three hour decontamination every time they respond to a call involving a patient with symptoms of the virus. "We've had some units come here twice in 24 hours," said EMS Captain Charles Steptoe. Steptoe showed ABC7 around the new decontamination facility on Wednesday afternoon. Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, the department used the building to store extra vehicles and apparatus. Now, it's home to a 24/7 operation made possible by a $30,000 machine that DC Fire and EMS purchased not long after the pandemic began. WJLA-TV ABC 7 WASHINGTON DC 'Cardiac calls' to 911 in New York City surge, and they may really be more COVID cases Since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak, residents of hard-hit New York City have been talking about ambulance sirens and how the wailing never seems to stop. They're not imagining things — but the reality is even grimmer than some may have guessed. A huge number of those ambulances are responding to fatal or near-fatal heart attacks suffered by New Yorkers whose true health issue may be COVID-19, the disease associated with the coronavirus. Emergency Medical Services, the part of the fire department that runs the city's paramedic response, is responding to three or four times its average daily number of cardiac calls, with each call almost twice as likely to involve a death. According to the Fire Department of New York, or FDNY, it means more patients are calling 911 closer to death, and many more of them are dying despite the best efforts of EMTs and paramedics before they ever reach a hospital.
