About 40 People Rescued from Homes in Lyons Due to Flooding Authorities said dozens of people were evacuated from their homes via rescue boats in suburban Lyons Sunday night as heavy rainfall brought flooding to the area. Lyons Fire Chief Gordon Nord said Monday that crews evacuated about 40 people total and their pets from homes in the western suburb. The water level was higher than chest deep on some streets, Nord said, noting that the current was moving as the water flooded into the area from nearby Salt Creek. He added that it was a dangerous situation and advised against wading through the water. Nord estimated it would be a few days before the water recedes enough to allow people back inside their homes. He said not everyone in the areas most impacted left their homes, but added that those who chose to stay can now only leave if it's an emergency. 12 Firefighters Hurt After Explosion, Fire In Downtown Los Angeles VIDEO: Twelve firefighters were injured in a fire and explosion in the Toy District of downtown Los Angeles on Saturday evening. As of Sunday afternoon, three have been discharged and eight remain hospitalized. The incident began with a fire that was first reported around 6:26 p.m. on Saturday. As firefighters were responding to the blaze inside the building at 327 East Boyd Street, the site of a butane honey oil supplier called Smoke Tokes, there was a "significant explosion," said LAFD Captain Erik Scott. "After the explosion, the fire absolutely intensified and it shot out 30 feet like a blowtorch right in the path of egress," Scott said. Two firefighters were initially put on ventilators and four were sent to the intensive care unit for burns. At last check, there were no remaining firefighters on ventilators. KTLA-TV 5 CW LOS ANGELES EMS Week 2020: Here's how much emergency medical technicians make in every state Sunday is the beginning of National EMS Week when the U.S. recognizes those who serve in emergency medical services. According to the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT), National EMS Week was started in 1974 by then-President Gerald Ford. This year in particular, the week is a good opportunity to honor the service that EMTs and paramedics provide to society in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, "one of the most daunting and demanding challenges our country has ever faced," a proclamation signed by President Trump on Friday said. "This week, we recognize these heroic men and women for their efforts to deliver life-saving care and compassion to their fellow Americans, and we acknowledge that our country is a safer and healthier place because of their work," the proclamation said. However, EMTs don't all get paid the same. FOX BUSINESS Virginia 911 center leverages remote capabilities, FirstNet to help address COVID-19 challenges A Virginia 911 center is combining remote solutions with FirstNet connectivity as part of a multi-pronged strategy to ensure operational continuity during the COVID-19 pandemic today and to evaluate new technological options for the center in the future. Doug Campbell, deputy director of the Department of Emergency & Customer Communications (DECC) for the city of Alexandria, Va., said such technology capabilities potentially are transformative for the 911 community. "After 30-plus years of doing this, who would have thought we would be doing it [answering 911 calls] at home?" Campbell said during an interview with IWCE's Urgent Communications. "But that's what we're looking at. You kind of have to massage it to fit your needs, but those are pretty cool [solutions], as technology has evolved. I would have never thought that we would be answering calls from home, especially emergency calls. IWCE'S URGENT COMMUNICATIONS Cancer research center study in Seattle targets front-line workers most at risk from the coronavirus Early in the novel coronavirus pandemic, Nick Fugate figured he would probably get infected sooner or later. As a paramedic with King County Medic One, he and his colleagues were transporting gravely ill patients every day, amid an atmosphere of uncertainty and urgency. Even now that hospitalizations have declined, Fugate puts his odds at 50-50. "We are still seeing COVID patients pretty regularly, particularly in the nursing home facilities and our other vulnerable populations," he said. So Fugate, who lives in Edmonds, was eager to sign up for an unusual research project that aims to monitor front-line workers for six months to better understand the risks they face and follow the progression of the disease in those who do get sick. Among the goals is figuring out why some people develop symptoms and others do not, and whether people can be infected again after recovering from COVID-19, the disease caused by the new virus.
