Chicago fire: 3-year-old girl killed in blaze at Bronzeville apartment ID'd by medical examiner A 3-year-old girl died who in an apartment fire Saturday morning in Bronzeville on the South Side has been identified, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said. The girl, identified as Story I. Chamba, died of burns and smoke inhalation after she was pulled from the flames, according to officials. The cause of the fire has been ruled to be incendiary, possibly caused by cooking on the stove. "Just to see her laying there like that, it's horrible," said a neighbor, who didn't want to be identified. She said she witnessed the unthinkable when firefighters pulled the lifeless body of her neighbor's 3-year-old daughter from their burning apartment after the girl's brother began screaming for help. "He said, 'Call help.' He said, 'Please help me. My little sister and my dog is in the house,'" the neighbor recalled. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Related: ‘They were literally running her to the ambulance’ Galesburg: Man injured, two dogs dead following Elm St. structure fire One man was injured and two dogs were pronounced deceased following a house fire over the weekend. According to a release from the city, 11 fire personnel on duty from all three stations responded to 99 Elm Street for a report of a structure fire at around 5:13 on Saturday morning. Before the fire crews arrived on the scene, the three occupants of the residence were able to self-rescue through the front of the home with one resident stating she smelled something burning before encountering the fire while exiting the bedroom. They were able to rescue one of the three dogs inside the residence. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire with Battalion Chief Dondlad Brackett establishing command and the Brooks Street Station crew using a line to attack the largest portion of the fire at the rear of the structure. Crews were on the scene for several hours putting the fire out. WGIL-AM 1400 GALESBURG Follow Up: Tower Rock Fire Chief honored as he steps down after 35 years A local fire chief is honored with the fire station named after him. He is stepping down after 35 years of serving the community. Dennis Wright is a long-time member with the Tower Rock Fire Protection District in Grand Tower. He's been chief for the last 33 years there and is permanently handing the chief hat over. He has seen many fires, floods and service calls in his time at the station. He says he will miss his time serving there but will remain active on the department and in the community still. "It's been many years. Been here 35 years on the department, 33 as chief and it's time to back up a little bit," Wright said. "Stick around and watch and try to give them some help and training and advice as they go along." He is grateful for all the support from his friends and the community throughout the years and on this day. KFVS-TV CBS 12 CAPE GIRARDEAU Glen Carbon Fire launches cadet program Over the past few months, the Glen Carbon Fire Protection District has been working to establish a cadet program for area youth between the ages of 14-21 to train and learn with the men and women of the district. The goal of the program is to introduce young adults to the world of fire and EMS in hopes of having them pursue careers in the fire service. There is no cost to the members to participate. These cadets get a first-hand view of the jobs that firefighters and paramedics do on a daily basis. Once they turn 18, cadets are able to join the department as paid, on-call firefighters. EDWARDSVILLE INTELLIGENCER - METERED SITE Chicago firefighters battle 2 Back of the Yards fires, with apartment blaze investigated as arson A fire forced people from their apartment Sunday night in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood, and police have called it arson. Chicago firefighters also responded to another fire in the same neighborhood. Just before 9 p.m., a fire broke out at 45th and Wood streets and police said they responded to an apartment where two people were displaced. Police said it was later determined that an accelerant was used to start the fire and it's being investigated as arson. No one was taken into custody. About 45 minutes later, firefighters had to battle another extra-alarm fire near 43rd and Honore streets, just blocks from the other fire. Firefighters used a saw to get access to the rear of one of the three buildings involved. Chicago police said several residences were damaged and 15 people were displaced from their homes with no reported injuries. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

27 different agencies respond to large fire at New Hampshire resort VIDEO: Emergency crews from 27 different agencies responded to a large fire at the Red Jacket Mountain View Resort Saturday afternoon. Photos and videos shared by people in the area showed smoke and flames coming out of rooms on the second and third floors. The Chief of the North Conway Fire Department says there were four injuries, two people at the resort and two firefighters. None of the injuries are considered to be serious. The Chief also shared with WMTW News 8 that 75 rooms were destroyed. Hotel staff organized buses to bring residents to other hotels in the area, as the crews worked and began to assess the damage. The center section housing the lobby area has water damage, but the left third of the building is undamaged. Houses destroyed and debris everywhere. That is what is left in wake of a EF-3 tornado that hit the southeastern part of the city Friday night, leaving a swath of destruction. During a news conference Saturday at 4:30, just under 24 hours since the twister first touched down, first responders had several updates on the status of the city. Andover Fire Chief Chad Russell putting it plainly, "We do have significant property damage in some of the neighborhoods throughout the community." One of several points the first responders hit on was a warning to residents returning to their homes. Chief Russell says many of them might not be stable right now. KAKE-TV ABC 10 WICHITA Female firefighters make strides in one Georgia city VIDEO: Two years ago, the Decatur Fire Department made a name for itself when it became the first and only fire department in the country to hold an all-female command. Today, they continue to hold that title, and last weekend the department celebrated a personal stride on Instagram when every one of their responding fire units had a woman as their fire apparatus operator. A fire apparatus operator is one of the most vital positions when out in the field. They operate and drive the fire truck and are in charge of all of the equipment at the scene of an incident. This includes carrying and unloading the ladder, providing water through hydrants and hose lines, supervising personnel and more. Fire Inspector Lashawna Bussey knows this job well as she was one of the apparatus operators on call during this milestone. WXIA-TV NBC 11 ATLANTA How Arkansas first responders train for hiking rescues VIDEO: Pinnacle Mountain State Park has more than 22 miles of trails and more than 14 miles of mountain bike trail-- along with those trails come some emergencies. "Here at Pinnacle Mountain State Park, we do handle some of the highest numbers of emergency services calls of any state park," Cale Davenport, Assistant Superintendent for Pinnacle Mountain State Park said. Those calls could range from a number of things spanning from heat exhaustion to something more extreme like what happened Tuesday night. "A young man was attempting to ride a mountain bike in an area undesignated. It was not one of our mountain bike trails," said Davenport. That 17-year-old, according to Davenport, entered through the Rocky Valley Trail. After leaving the hiking trail not intended for mountain bikes, the teen crashed and fell, plunging 30 feet onto bare rock. KTHV-TV CBS 11 LITTLE ROCK An unseen hazard: Indiana to remove toxic firefighting foam, but contamination persists In the early 1980s, Indianapolis firefighter Tom Hanify was part of a training exercise using foam spray to put out a controlled house fire. After Hanify and the crew contained the blaze, they stuck around just to play in the foam. He said that at the time, the firefighters were just having fun. Now, looking back, there was nothing funny about it. That's because Hanify now realizes that foam contained per-and-polyfluoroalkyl, "forever" chemicals that don't break down and build up in the human body. Recent research has linked it to at least eight different kinds of cancer. "We were literally playing with this stuff and had no clue what we were doing," said Hanify, who today serves as president of the Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana. It was the same story for nearly every Indiana fire department that used what is known as aqueous film-forming foam over the next four decades. JEFFERSONVILLE NEWS & TRIBUNE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
