Illinois State Fire Marshal hopes to curb firefighters' increased risk of cancer Firefighters can face underrecognized threats beyond the dangers of running into burning buildings. January is Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month. The International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) says from 2015 through 2020, 75% of those added to the Fallen Firefighter Memorial of Honor Wall were members who died from occupational cancer. Illinois State Fire Marshal Matt Perez is calling for change, saying that cancer is the number one cause of death in firefighters. "We're doing our best to provide education, training and resources to our firefighters in order to protect them from the increased risk of cancer that they face," Perez said. September 11 brought more attention to the long-term health risks plaguing first responders. While battling fires, crews are exposed to toxic chemicals. WGN-TV 9 CHICAGO 20 years to reach 90% funding for Springfield police & fire pensions The city of Springfield estimates it could take nearly two decades to reach 90% funding for police and fire pensions. The Office of Budget and Management says property taxes used to pay for fire and police pensions entirely each year. But they say that stopped about five years ago so there reaching for that money elsewhere. "We are facing looming pressure," said Bill McCarty, Springfield's budget director. "The starkest is police and fire obligations." The city says they would have to come up with over $800,000,000 over the next 20 years to get to 90% funding for police and fire pensions. McCarty says this creates a gap they have to fill. "So now we're taking from income taxes or sales taxes that went to city services," said McCarty. "Our day-to-day operation we are now taking or cannibalizing those items so we can put that money into required pension payments." WRSP-TV FOX 55 SPRINGFIELD 2 vehicles catch fire at Unity Point Methodist parking deck in Peoria A pair of vehicles on fire at the parking deck at Unity Point Methodist kept fire crews busy Friday afternoon, Peoria Battalion Chief Michael Hughes confirmed. At approximately 2:24 p.m., emergency crews responded to a report of a vehicle fire at the Unity Point Methodist parking garage, located at 221 NE Glen Oak Ave. Fire crews arrived and found heavy black smoke coming from the third deck. Crews quickly reached the third level, where they discovered two vehicles completely engulfed in flames. From there, crews on the third level hoisted fire hoses up to them using a rope bag deployed by crews on the ground floor. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in both vehicles quickly. In addition to putting out hot spots, crews made sure all smoke was ventilated from the parking deck. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA $20 Million available for rural Illinois EMS agencies New funding is available for Illinois emergency agencies in small towns. Throughout the pandemic, smaller EMS stations faced many challenges due to staffing but now new legislation may be giving them the boost they need. $20 million dollars in grant funding is now available for Illinois EMS rural stations to train, recruit and buy equipment. Auburn Fire and Rescue is completely run by volunteers. Auburn firefighter and alderman, Ben Royer, says this has become especially challenging with numbers so tight throughout the pandemic. "Staffing is always a concern," Royer expressed. "Even with 35 members, when the call drops we question who will be available. Whether it is 2:00 AM or 200 PM, it really changes the dynamic of who might be in town and who might be available to run a call," Royer explained. WICS-TV ABC 20 SPRINGFIELD PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Massive House Fire In Texas Destroys 2 Homes Under Construction VIDEO/PHOTOS: Celina firefighters managed to contain a large fire before it could spread very far after multiple homes under construction went up in flames on Sunday, January 30. Just after 5:00 p.m., Celina firefighters received a structure fire call from the 2800 block of Field Street in Celina. Two or three homes under construction had caught on fire. The heat became so intense that nearby homes were threatened and that a grass fire was sparked to the north of the Bluewood subdivision just south of the Collin college campus. Jeff Hershberger lives about 50 feet from the homes that caught on fire. He said that in addition to the fire department units who responded, several of his neighbors "whom he had never met before" rushed to help contain the blaze. KTVT CBS 11 FORT WORTH Arizona fire department appoints first female fire chief in its 75-year history Melissa Hilpert, a 22-year firefighting veteran, has become the first female fire chief in the 75-year history of Rural Metro Fire, a private firefighting company founded and based in Scottsdale. Hilpert assumed her duties of overseeing Rural Metro's fire stations in the Yuma area of southwestern Arizona this month, the Yuma Sun reported. "As a woman, I feel it's important to let other women know that there can only be a barrier to their success if they allow one," Hilpert said. Hilpert began her career with the Rural Metro Fire as a reserve firefighter and EMT in 2000. During her tenure with the company, she has also served as a certified paramedic firefighter, wildland firefighter, crew boss, rescue diver, emergency medical service captain, EMS chief and assistant fire chief. "I feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment at being named chief for our Yuma operations," she said. KSAZ-TV FOX 10 PHOENIX Fire still burns at 95: Firefighter is oldest-serving member in South Carolina Hobart "Hobie" Erickson put in 30 years at a fire department in New Jersey and rose to the level of captain. Then, he and his wife, Lois, retired to the Lakelands. End of story, right? Absolutely not. Erickson kept riding by the Donalds Fire Department, and Lois encouraged him to volunteer. That eventually fueled his internal flame to return to doing what he always loved. Erickson joined the Donalds station and has spent 35 1/2 years there. He's squeezed two full careers into one lifetime. Erickson is the oldest active firefighter in the state, according to officials from the South Carolina Firefighters Association, who came Saturday to present him a certificate. In addition, state Sen. Mike Gambrell presented him a proclamation, and the Town of Donalds and fire chief Ronnie Vaughn also gave Erickson gifts. "He'll expire before he retires," Lois joked during Saturday's 95th birthday party for Erickson at the station. FIRST COAST NEWS This map is the key to when US might start easing COVID-19 restrictions VIDEO: There is now more optimism that the worst of the coronavirus pandemic may be ending -- and as other nations lift certain Covid-19 restrictions, some public health experts question whether US counties and cities should consider easing their guidance on mask-wearing or social distancing, as well. But others warn not to relax such measures too soon. Denmark has decided to lift all Covid-19 restrictions within the country, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced Wednesday evening, adding that Covid-19 "should no longer be categorized as a socially critical sickness." "Denmark will be completely open from 1 February," Frederiksen said. "Tonight we can start lowering our shoulders and find our smiles again. CNN HEALTH PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
