Galesburg City Council to discuss Police and Fire positions, tourism bureau Galesburg Aldermen have on their agenda Monday night a discussion item regarding the creation of Deputy Chief positions within the Galesburg Police and Galesburg Fire Departments. The measure is likely uncontroversial since aldermen approved the annual salary schedule two weeks ago that included these new jobs. Council documents say this is essentially an ordinance to finalize the creation. As expected current Police Captain Rod Riggs will assume the Deputy Police Chief role. Council documents say ultimately the hiring power for the Deputy Chief lies with the Police Chief with the advice and consent of the city manager. Riggs will automatically be promoted with the passage of this ordinance. Currently, there are four Galesburg Fire Battalion Chiefs, and the new deputy chief job would replace one of those. WGIL-AM GALEBURG RADIO 14 1 dead, 4 others critically injured in separate residential fires on the Far Chicago South Side Two separate fires on the Far South Side of Chicago between Saturday night and Sunday morning resulted in critical injuries to five people, one of whom later died of his injuries, according to the Chicago Fire Department. About 4 a.m. Sunday, firefighters were called to the 400 block of West 127th Street in West Pullman for a residential blaze that initially left two people in critical condition, though one of the two later was pronounced dead, said agency spokesman Cmdr. Frank Velez. A 60-year-old man was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital, where he died of his injuries. Velez said an "elderly female," whose exact age was not immediately available, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she remained in critical condition. Firefighters found no working smoke detectors in the home. ELGIN COURIER NEWS - METERED SITE Fires getting deadlier as many Illinois homes lack working smoke detectors In October 1994, Logan Square resident Jordan Rodriguez and his twin 4-year-old brother Justin accidentally started a fire at their North Side home while playing with a lighter. Their mom quickly tried to get everyone out the back door. "I look behind me and my brother wasn't there so, um, I didn't have any hesitation, I didn't have any idea what I was doing but my instinct was that's my brother, I've got to save his life," Rodriguez told the I-Team. He ran back inside the burning home but couldn't drag his brother out. "I remember just looking at him and just basically hugging him, I, if that would have been the end, I would have died with my brother," Rodriguez said. While the badly burned brothers survived that fire years ago, data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System analyzed by the ABC7 I-Team shows today the likelihood of injury or death in a fire is increasing. ABC 7 NEWS CHICAGO Fire damages Lakeview apartments, restaurants A fire in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood has left some apartments and several businesses damaged Monday morning. The fire occurred just after midnight in the 2800-block of North Broadway. Firefighters were seen dealing with heavy smoke in trying to put out the blaze in a building over two restaurants, including Renaldi's Pizzeria. Some residents have been displaced by the fire. No injuries have been reported. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Limestone, Cuba, Toluca fire agencies receive equipment grants A trio of area fire departments have received grants from a state program. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources provides federal funds to volunteer departments for assistance in purchasing new equipment and to fund training, the agency stated in a news release. Those funds come via the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service Volunteer Fire Assistance grant program that offers matching funds for those purposes. The program reimburses 50% of the recipient agency's costs for training or equipment. Those receiving grants had to spend the money first before being reimbursed. The Limestone Fire Protection District received $5,000 for a full radio set. The Cuba Fire Protection District received $2,694 for MSA respirator bottles. And the Toluca-Rutland Fire Protection District received $3,796 for hand tools, nozzles, hose and radios. PEORIA JOURNAL STAR PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Latest mergers sought by fire agencies will test California county's funding and resolve Bodega Bay's financially struggling firefighting agency could have a new name, more firefighters and more paramedics under a plan that would expand the growing Sonoma County Fire District next year — but only if the Board of Supervisors ponies up as much as $2.5 million a year to make it happen. The 66-year-old coast agency and the 100-year-old Russian River Fire Protection District both want to join Sonoma County Fire, the latest in a series of moves meant to consolidate and modernize the county's far-flung and somewhat antiquated fire services network. Sonoma County Fire Chief Mark Heine called the changes important for firefighting but difficult for the agencies making them. "It's a very emotional thing for a board, disbanding a fire agency and combining it with another one," said Heine. THE PRESS DEMOCRAT - METERED SITE Washington firefighters treated for hypothermia after rescuing man from sinking vehicle VIDEO: First responders rescued a man trapped in an upside down submerged vehicle in Liberty Bay Saturday morning. The Poulsbo Fire and Police departments responded to the scene of the rollover accident off Fjord Drive around 8:40 a.m. The vehicle went off the roadway into Liberty Bay south of the Poulsbo Yacht Club, according to Poulsbo Fire Department spokesperson Jody Matson. One woman was already outside of the vehicle when first responders arrived. A witness told KING 5 she was screaming for help because the driver of the vehicle was still trapped inside. Matson said the tide was in and the vehicle was upside down and almost completely submerged with only the two rear tires sticking out of the water when first responders arrived. Firefighters didn't wait for a rescue boat to arrive and swam out to the vehicle without any specialized gear to rescue the man. KING 5 NEWS Proposed Massachusetts addiction treatment facility would include wing for first responders A Quincy-based addiction treatment company is looking to open a facility in Canton that would include a specialized wing for first responders. ARK Behavioral Health has proposed converting the shuttered Kindred-Tower Hill nursing home, nestled at the end of Getchell Way near Randolph, into a substance-use treatment facility that could help up to 160 people at a time through the first steps of recovery. The facility, to be named Bedrock Recovery Center, would be equipped to monitor patients through a weeklong detox and into a month or so of residential treatment. The project is before Canton's zoning board of appeals. ARK has filed for a special permit under the town's new bylaws that allow substance-abuse treatment facilities in areas of town zoned for industrial use. The new permit process was passed by town meeting voters this year. THE PATRIOT LEDGER Kentucky: Volunteer fire departments seeing a decline in ranks; special team to help combat issue According to the National Volunteer Fire Council, 65% of all firefighters in the United States in 2016 were volunteers. But the number of people joining volunteer fire departments is on the decline, and not just in Daviess County. "The volunteer service on the fire side is really suffering," said Randy Lawson, executive director for the Kentucky Firefighter's Association. To younger people, being a volunteer firefighter "is not as appealing as it used to be," he said. "The volunteer fire departments, not just in Kentucky but nationwide, are crying for help." Several chiefs of area volunteer departments said they have had fewer people signing on to be firefighters for some time. Having fewer volunteers on a department's personnel roster has an impact on the response because there are simply fewer people to come to a fire or emergency run. MESSENGER-INQUIRER Retiring New York fire chief laments impending layoffs There's something about the scene that unfolds when the tones sound and fire trucks race out of the City of Newburgh fire headquarters on Grand Street, said acting Chief Terry Ahlers. He watched Thursday afternoon as the firemen did their dance, jumping out of their everyday shoes, slipping on turnout gear and hopping in two trucks. The exhaust hoses swung from the ceiling as the trucks zoomed out and the garage doors shut. They were responding to an odor of gas at a building. "Sometimes, you don't know if they're going to come back," Ahlers said. "They might never get to wear those shoes again." Ahlers only has a handful of work days left before he retires Jan. 2. He started at the Newburgh Fire Department 20 years ago, on Nov. 29, 1999. He is departing at a troubling and uncertain time for Newburgh firefighters; the department is preparing to lay off 14 of the 68 firemen as part of the greater plan to balance the city's 2020 budget.
