| Protecting Firefighters with an Innovative Decontamination Process Author: Chief Mike Duyck (Ret.), Vice President, Emergency Technical Decon Firefighters encounter multiple carcinogens, frequently at dangerous levels, and the danger doesn’t end when the job is done. Residue left on firefighter’s gear can potentially cause a range of long-term deleterious health conditions. Toxic molecules can accumulate after multiple incomplete cleaning attempts, building up over time. Our innovative approach not only extends the life of the gear, it can significantly decrease the chances of future health problems for your firefighting professionals. read more |

Funeral held for Chicago Fire Lt. killed in attempted carjacking As family, friends and a community say a final goodbye to Lieutenant Dwain Williams, the retired firefighter shot and killed during an attempted carjacking last Thursday. "What I miss, like I said, he's always been a wonderful teacher. Every time I see him he has something to teach me," said Lt. Williams' grandson, Michael Armstrong. Because of the pandemic, the Saturday morning funeral was held in the parking lot of the Monument of Faith Evangelistic Church on the city's Southwest Side. "We were taught all of our lives: Fight for what you desire. Work hard for it, get it. ... And that's exactly what he did," Williams' brother the Rev. Keith Williams, a pastor, said. Some wore red in tribute to the 65-year old husband, father, and grandfather known affectionately at TC. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Cab company destroyed during large fire in Springfield Firefighters spent hours Sunday morning working to put out the fire at 1700 Factory Street in Springfield, which according to the fire department is the building for Lincoln Yellow Cab company. The Springfield Fire Department was called at 4:30 a.m. for multiple reports of flames coming from the business. Springfield fire says they upgraded the fire to a code two, requiring more resources to fight the large fire. Officials told a WAND News crew on scene that the building is a total loss. An investigation into how it started is underway. No one was inside the fire and no injuries have been reported from the fire. Owners of Lincoln Yellow Cab on scene told WAND News the destruction of the fire is hard to swallow, saying they have no insurance on the building. The owners say they have been using the building as a storage facility. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR Fatal Box Truck Crash with Pedestrian in Arlington Heights Police and firefighter/paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 6:02 p.m. Saturday, December 12, 2020 to a report of a man down in the road with an update that a man had been hit by a truck near Rand Road and Dryden Avenue in Arlington Heights. Police and firefighter/paramedics discovered a man deceased in the middle of Rand Road (US 12) in front of Sports Page Bar & Grill. Officials initially did not confirm that the box truck is the vehicle that hit the pedestrian. An extended crash investigation is likely for the next several hours. Safety personnel and/or administrative personnel from UPS responded immediately to the scene. The truck was apparently being operated by UPS. THE CARDINAL Fire crews battle business fire in Carbondale Firefighters from around the region are assisting Carbondale Fire Department in a business fire on Industrial Park Road in Carbondale Sunday night. The fire broke out about 7 p-m. and the firefight has lasted for hours as crews on scene used ladder trucks to get a handle on the fire. Witnesses tell News 3 they saw a glowing orange cloud over Mayberry Moving and Storage behind Springfield Electric off Highway 51. "I was on my way home, and we saw a huge smoke cloud, so we kept driving and then saw fire," Bradford said. "They had cop cars and fire trucks blocking the road." Carbondale resident Jae Naugle, who said he is a former firefighter in Michigan, was watching the massive effort by the firefighters. "We couldn't really see much, the building had already collapsed," Naugle said. "Still burning on the south and west sides but under the metal siding and roofing." Naugle said it appeared the tower trucks were trying to get water on the seat of the fire that was blocked by the collapsed portion of the building. WSIL-TV ABC 3 HARRISBURG PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Man catches victims jumping from burning Georgia apartment VIDEO: As others were desperately trying to get to safety, a local man is being honored for taking action to make sure they could on Friday. And his actions may be why a bad situation didn't become much worse. Officials said William Cox was among the first on the scene when a fire broke out at Fairington Village Apartments in Stonecrest on Friday afternoon. He arrived and said he was immediately concerned when he didn't see people evacuating. "I walked down and I don't see anyone running out of the building," he said. "So, I'm screaming, 'Please, the building is on fire. If you're in there, get out'." Suddenly, the very people that were heeding his call were presented with a serious problem - flames had already overtaken the breezeways meaning their main exits were blocked. "And they just started throwing me their children," he said. WXIA-TV NBC 11 ATLANTA ‘The First Five': DC Emergency Responders Will Receive COVID-19 Vaccine Five emergency responders will be the first members of the D.C. Fire and EMS Department to get the COVID-19 vaccine this coming week, a sign that "the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter," Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a news release. The group, designated "The First Five," are FEMS Chief John Donnelly, the department's Medical Director Dr. Robert Holman, Lieutenants Joseph Papariello and Keishea Jackson, and firefighter/EMT Julio Quinteros. All are D.C. residents. Some of the First Five expressed their desire to get vaccinated for their family members and "brothers and sisters in the firehouse" and encouraged widespread vaccination, according to the release. "My father is everything to me; he's my world. And if I don't get it for any other reason, I have to get it for my daddy. I have to make sure he's safe," Jackson said. WRC-TV NBC 4 WASHINGTON DC New program in Colorado to offer early cancer screening for firefighters The team behind a new wellness program created specifically for firefighters said they hope early cancer screening will help save lives. The Medical Center of Aurora and Potomac Primary Care are launching the new effort called the Firefighter Wellness and Cancer Screening Program. "They support and protect our Colorado communities and now it's time for us to protect them," said Amie Shae, the oncology program manager at The Medical Center of Aurora and part of the team that created the new program. "This program really is comprehensive," she said. "The entry point is through a primary care, which will do annual physicals and labs for firefighters. And from there will do cancer screenings and cardiac screenings." Shea said the program is designed for regular follow ups so firefighters don't "fall through the cracks." And if doctors spot a problem, then the firefighter is referred to a specialist through the program. KUSA-TV NBC 9 DENVER Creeping Coyote Surprises Firefighters at Florida Station PHOTOS: A group of Fort Lauderdale firefighters had quite the surprise when a coyote wandered into their fire station Sunday morning. The adorable babies joined their firefighting fathers for a photo on Sunday. The department wanted to celebrate an unexpected bright spot during a tough year. "So it's just kind of a coincidence that we all became pregnant at the same time," said Fire Marshal Chris Keller. "We thought it would be cool to get a group shot with everybody. 2020 has been a pretty rough year for everybody. So it's kind of a fun time to get together and bring some joy to each other." The Grand Blanc Township Fire Department added four bouncing baby boys and three beautiful baby girls to their firefighting crew in 2020. Congratulations to all the moms and dads.
