3 People Injured When Explosion Levels House In Joliet A massive explosion leveled a house in Joliet Sunday afternoon, and the blast was felt blocks away. As CBS 2's Steven Graves reported, perfect timing saved the lives of the couple who lived in the house. Late Sunday night, crews were digging up a gas line, trying to figure out the cause of the explosion. The good news is all the victims were expected to survive, but neighbors called the destruction devastating. "It's gone – gone!" said one man said. "I mean, it's leveled to the foundation." The explosion happened around 3 p.m. near East Washington Street and Argyle Avenue. Afterward, a part of the neighborhood resembled the sights and sounds of a war zone. "Like when I was in Vietnam, that's how it sounded," the man said. A young man who lives nearby told Graves he was playing video games when the explosion shook him off his bed. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Firefighter's widow seeks health benefits from Buffalo Grove Earlier this year, Buffalo Grove officials agreed to abide by court ruling requiring the village to pay full pension benefits to the widow of firefighter Kevin Hauber, who died of colon cancer in January 2018. Now Kimberly Hauber is asking the village pay health insurance benefits for her family also, arguing they are entitled under the Public Safety Employee Benefits Act, which provides health care benefits at the municipality's expense to a first responder who dies in the line of duty responding to an emergency. The village board will decide Monday whether to convene a hearing to hear her claims. Hauber already has filed litigation in Lake County over the request, claiming that the village has ignored her application. "This is provided by state law," said the family's attorney, Thomas Mazur. "These are benefits that this family is entitled to, having already lost a husband and a father. This is not an angry widow demanding something she is not entitled to." ILLINOIS DAILY HERALD - METERED SITE Chicago firefighter's son, 12, shot in Woodlawn park Chicago police said a 12-year-old boy was shot in the city's Woodlawn neighborhood Friday evening. Police said the shooting happened in a park at East 64th Street and South Ellis Avenue sometime between 8 and 8:30 p.m. Police said the boy was standing in the park with a group of males when shots were fired. The child was struck in the right leg. The boy was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in fair condition, according to police. The child is the son of a Chicago firefighter, the Chicago Fire Department confirmed Friday night. No one is currently in custody, Chicago police said. An investigation by Area One detectives is ongoing. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Bloomington Fire Department loans ladder truck to Decatur following crash The Decatur Fire Department has accepted a ladder truck loaned from Bloomington after a crash damaged its equipment. The crash that damaged a DFD ladder truck happened on the morning of Aug. 9. Authorities said the truck was heading westbound on Grand Avenue as a car was moving on Monroe Street. The car struck the rear of the truck's passenger side. As a result, Decatur firefighters had only one operational ladder truck left and had to rearrange rigs. The only working DFD ladder truck was damaged in a January crash. The timing was not ideal, as Decatur typically has a busy fire department this time of year. At this time last year, the city had responded to 100 fires. As of Aug. 10, there had been 155 fires in 2020. WAND-TV NBC CHANNEL 17 Apartment Kitchen Fire Extinguished In Arlington Heights; No Injuries Police and firefighter/paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 6:42 p.m. Friday August 14, 2020 to a report of an apartment fire in the block of 500 East Circle Drive. Firefighters arrived to find light smoke coming out of the rear of the apartment building and then heavy smoke in a common hallway. Firefighters entered the apartment and extinguished a kitchen fire. The fire was contained to the kitchen. The incident was upgraded to a working fire response by 6:48 p.m. and the fire was extinguished by 6:56 p.m. with one 1 3/4" hose line. Electric power was temporarily shut down to the building by ComEd. A primary search of the apartment unit on fire and adjacent apartment units was underway immediately. An "all clear" on the primary search for victims in the apartment unit that was on fire was declared by 6:59 p.m. Initially there were no reported injuries. THE CARDINAL PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

9/11 Memorial in New York City reverses decision to cancel ‘Tribute in Light' amid outrage Facing mounting outrage over its decision to cancel the Tribute in Light, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum has backed down and agreed to stage the beloved display on the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. "In the last 24 hours we've had conversations with many interested parties and believe we will be able to stage the tribute in a safe and appropriate fashion," CEO Alice Greenwald said in a statement. Greenwald had announced on Thursday that it would drop the commemoration, featuring twin beams shining in the sky over Ground Zero, for fear of exposing some 40 electrical workers to COVID-19. But the decision stirred widespread opposition in New York and around the country. Immediately, the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation stepped up to create the same light show on the evening of September 11. NEW YORK POST Mayor, fire chief in Louisiana unveil new uniforms promoting COVID-19 safety The Shreveport Fire Department unveiled a new duty uniform t-shirt Friday to promote COVID-19 safety measures. Mayor Adrian Perkins joined Shreveport Fire Chief Scott Wolverton and Willis Knighton Health System Senior Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Brian Crawford to unveil the new t-shirt, which is printed with messages on the back reminding people to mask up when in public, wash up at least 20 seconds, and keep up with current CDC guidelines. It also reminds people to "keep back 6 feet." The t-shirts, which are approved SFD uniform attire, were funded by Willis Knighton. "It's an idea that came from our Human Relations Committee," Chief Wolverton said. "The back of the shirt conveys a great community safety, life safety, education message about COVID and those mitigation efforts that we can do to help reduce the spreading of the virus." KTAL-TV NBC 6 SHREVEPORT Pennsylvania firefighting museum welcomes home its horse-drawn steam pumper PHOTOS: Raised on blocks to ease stress on the wooden wheels, the 111-year-old Union steam pumper traveled 50 miles Saturday on a flatbed truck from Shenandoah, Schuylkill County, to Reading. The crew transporting the 1909 pumper stopped in Leesport to weigh it before bringing it to the Reading Area Firefighting Museum at Fifth and Laurel streets. It was about 7,000 pounds. "That's about three-and-half tons," said William H. Rehr III, a retired Reading fire chief who is now president of the museum, which is in the former Liberty Fire Company. After the hourslong trip, about 15 museum volunteers helped push the steamer next to the Junior No. 2 1923 pumper, an American LaFrance model. "It's kind of rewarding," Rehr said, watching the pumper being lowered from the truck. "The city gave it to the historical society in the 1930s. It's fortunate that the historical society took care of it." READING EAGLE Awaiting critical info: Texas crash that killed firefighter, police officer remains under investigation The Jan. 11 crash that killed two Lubbock first responders remains an open investigation as detectives await critical information from an out of state laboratory that was temporarily closed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Lubbock police spokesman Lt. Leath McClure said investigators expect to have the information soon as the the lab hopes to reopen next week. "They know we're waiting on it," McClure said. "They know what the significance of this is." The crash killed Lubbock Fire Rescue Lt. Eric Hill and Lubbock police officer Nicholas Reyna and seriously injured firefighter Matt Dawson. The men were among the first responders initially called out to a wreck involving a single vehicle that was traveling on icy roads southbound on I-27 near Drew Street/FM 1294 when it crossed the median into the northbound lanes and rolled. About 10 minutes later, a second vehicle hauling a trailer left the southbound lanes of I-27 and rolled, coming to rest in the median 25 to 50 yards south of the first crash. LUBBOCK AVALANCHE-JOURNAL NASCAR veteran Ryan Newman says thanks to first responders from Daytona 500 Nearly six full months after leaving the track in an ambulance following one of the most horrifying accidents in recent memory, NASCAR veteran Ryan Newman made his return to the Daytona International Speedway on Sunday for the Cup Series' Go Bowling 235. And before he took the green flag for his first laps on the speedway's Road Course, he took a moment to offer a thank you to those who worked to make sure he could eventually walk away and race again. Through his radio communications prior to the green flag, Ryan Newman offered a formal thank you to the Daytona track workers and first responders to his accident in February, crediting them with saving his life and ultimately allowing him to once again race at Daytona. In February, Newman was leading the Daytona 500 coming to the checkered flag when he was turned into the outside wall, flipping his car over in front of traffic where he was struck in the driver's side roof by an oncoming car. 247 SPORTS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
