Mario Araujo, 1st Chicago firefighter to die of COVID-19, honored in somber ceremony A somber ceremony honored the first Chicago firefighter to die from COVID-19. Family of the fallen prayed his death was not in vain, and that others can take this pandemic seriously. On a gray Chicago day, the city remembers. It remembers a man who was ready to run into a burning building to save lives, but whose own life was cut short by a pandemic spreading like wildfire across the city and country. "We can see, we can smell, we can feel the smoke and heat from a fire, but there are no tangible signs of the invisible danger of COVID-19," said Chicago Fire Commissioner Richard C. Ford II. Mario Araujo, 49, was the first Chicago firefighter EMT to die from the coronavirus. His colleagues saluted, his family was honored as they and mourn a loss due to COVID-19 that thousands of others have endured in our state. "We can't get Mario back to us, so the only thing we can ask to the people is to be conscious, to take care of themselves," said Luz, Araujo's cousin. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Spike in mental health calls among Illinois first responders First responders are there to help in some of the worst moments of our lives, but who's there to support them when they need help coping with their job? "The doctors said firefighting is out of the picture," said Daniel Persinger, Stateline fire department Chaplain. Persinger dreamed of being a firefighter his entire life. "In high school, I was doing explorer programs through New Milford and doing ride alongs with Rockford Fire," Persinger said. But everything changed in July of 2012 when he was diagnosed with Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy, a disease that weakens your muscles "The diagnosis broke my heart," Persinger said. Persinger didn't let the disease stop him and now works as a chaplain for Stateline fire departments and with Illinois Firefighter Peer Support, an organization that runs a mental health hotline for first responders. WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD State Fire Marshal Reminds Illinoisans to 'Change Your Clock, Test and Inspect Your Smoke Alarms' Daylight saving time a reminder to test, check expiration and change batteries in smoke alarms or replace broken alarms Springfield, Ill- The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) reminds Illinoisans to test, check expirations dates and replace the batteries in their smoke alarms as daylight saving time ends this weekend and they turn their clocks back. In 2019, there were 91 residential fire deaths in Illinois, with most of those deaths occurring in homes without working smoke alarms. "We recommend testing smoke alarms once a month, but the time change serves as a built-in reminder to test, inspect and replace nonoperational or expired smoke alarms, along with replacing batteries in smoke alarms. While you are changing the clocks in your homes, hit the test button on smoke alarms. Time is everything when it comes to escaping a home fire, and a working smoke alarm will increase your chances of escaping if a fire was to break out," said Illinois State Fire Marshal Matt Perez. VILLAGE OF STICKNEY Elgin Fire Department hoists family outside grandmother's hospital window VIDEO: A team of firefighters went above and beyond to lift the spirits of a patient at a suburban rehabilitation hospital. The only way for patients to visit with family members at that facility is to do so through a window, which makes Mary Moore's third-floor room a big hurdle. Enter the Elgin Fire Department with a solution: a ladder truck to bring them to the window. "We love Grandma, she's also a sister," said her granddaughter, Sarah Hernandez. "She's everything to the family." "We're just hoping, you know, with all the love around her, that she can feel that," said her daughter, Mickey Isunza. Moore has been suffering from serious respiratory illness and transferred to the Avondale Estates facility this week. She's the matriarch of a large, tightly-knit family. Concerned relatives flew in from around the country to see her, except they weren't really going to be able to see much looking up from the parking lot. When Elgin's fire chief heard about it, he offered the solution. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Ohio: Assistant Chief Tracy Smith becomes highest-ranking woman ever at Columbus Division of Fire Tracy L. Smith was promoted to the rank of Assistant Chief of the Columbus Division of Fire (CFD) on October 18 after 22 years of service. She is now the highest-ranking woman in the history of CFD. "It's not significant that it's me. It's significant that over the years, the city has changed in the opportunities it gives all people to succeed," Smith said. "I hope this sends a message to young women everywhere that if they work hard and stay focused, they can do anything." Smith entered the division on October 25, 1998. She was promoted to lieutenant in 2006. In 2011, she was promoted to captain. In May 2013, she was promoted to Battalion Chief, and in May 2020, she was promoted to Deputy Chief. "I've known Tracy and her work, her pursuit of excellence, for decades. She has consistently done an outstanding job," said Columbus Public Safety Director Ned Pettus, Jr. WCMH-TV NBC 4 COLUMBUS U.S. records more than 90,000 COVID-19 cases in one day for the first time The United States reached a daily record for coronavirus when more than 90,000 cases were reported on Thursday, according to the latest NBC News tally. More than 30 states reported more than 1,000 cases. It was the first time the U.S. has crossed 90,000 cases in one day, almost 10,000 more than the previous high of 80,662 cases, which was set just a day before on Wednesday. The record, of 90,456, also came after the U.S. logged 9 million COVID-19 cases, only hours after reporting a single-day record crossing 80,000 cases for the first time. The U.S. recorded 982 deaths on Thursday, leading the world death toll with nearly 230,000 deaths, according to the John Hopkins University COVID-19 dashboard. Reports of COVID-19 infections are increasing across the United States at the fastest rate since the start of the pandemic. NBC NEWS Family credits Kentucky firefighter with saving newborn daughter's life after premature delivery One week old and weighing a little more than 1 pound, Ellie Whitehall is beating all the odds in the Norton Children's Hospital neonatal intensive care unit. From Lebanon Junction, her family credits a firefighter for not only delivering Ellie but also saving the child's life. Ellie's mother, Brianna Whitehall, thought nothing of the pain she felt at the 24-week mark of her pregnancy. "I was thinking it was Braxton Hicks (contractions), false labor basically," she said. Minutes later, however, she was on her bathroom floor delivering a baby girl. "My first phone call was my mom," said Edelin Whitehall, Ellie's father. "Who doesn't need their mom? I don't care how old you are." Edelin Whitehall's next call was to 911, though. Ellie needed immediate care when she decided to come into the world 16 weeks early on the bathroom floor. When the Whitehalls' call for help went out over the radio, a volunteer firefighter for the Lebanon Junction Fire Department, William Brown, just happened to be a two minutes away. WDRB-TV FOX 41 LOUISVILLE Tragic 1912 fire in San Antonio claims 8 lives, destroys St. John's Orphanage A tragic fire killed eight people, including three young children, and destroyed St. John's Catholic Orphans Home back in 1912. The fire started around 4:30 a.m. on Oct. 30, 1912, at the orphanage on the corner of San Saba and W. Houston Street, where CHRISTUS Santa Rosa now stands. According to the San Antonio Light, 87 children, ranging in age from 2 to 12 years old, and nine nuns were in the building at the time of the fire. San Antonio Fire Chief Wright, at the time, told reporters the work of the nuns "was all that saved those little tots." After the fire broke out, the first work of the nuns was devoted to saving the children. They woke up the sleeping orphans and marched them all, single file, down the only fire escape on the west side of the building. The death of Mother Mary of the Cross was one of pure courage, as she learned Francis O'Brien, a baby, was missing. Without hesitation, she ran back upstairs, found the boy and struggled to a window with him in her arms. WOAI-TV NBC 4 SAN ANTONIO Haunted Witches Castle in Maine raising money for firefighter VIDEO: Five years ago, Carol Cody and her husband Bob Gross, along with Bob's daughter April, turned their barn into a pirate ship for Halloween with the idea of inviting the public and taking donations to raise money for non-profits. They do Halloween at 73 New Road in Penobscot the way other people might do Christmas, or New Year's Eve. The barn is a Haunted Witches Castle this year instead of a pirate ship, but it's still scary and still raising money for a great cause. They started getting the castle ready in August for what has become an annual October event. A lot of adults who bring their kids, and some that just come as adults," Carol said. "And they really like it because they're usually blown away at the amount of detail we do, and just how it looks really neat." There's no charge to enter this terror-dome, but they are asking for donations to help support Penobscot firefighter Jim Flannery, who's been diagnosed with ALS.
