Crane accident Chicago: Officials investigating cause of CTA station collapse VIDEO: Crews will continue to work Thursday to remove a large crane that collapsed right next to the CTA tracks at the Bryn Mawr station in Edgewater Wednesday afternoon, crushing cars and causing evacuations. Pictures taken by residents show a large yellow piece of machinery that appears to have taken down power lines. The Chicago Fire Department said a 200-ton capacity drill head construction crane tipped over while it was being used. CTA officials clarified the crane fell off the tracks near Bryn Mawr onto street level, into an alley and is now in a precarious position. CTA said a contractor is preparing to disassemble the crane so they can get the machinery out of the alley. Crews are still working to remove the massive construction crane and figure out what caused this collapse. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO The Great Chicago Fire, Oct. 8-10, 1871 It was 150 years ago that the Great Chicago Fire ignited, eventually killing about 300 people and consuming a major portion of the city over three days. The Associated Press, just 25 years old then, sent dispatches first from its office in the Chicago Tribune building before staff fled to a Western Union office, where they filed before fleeing again because of the approaching fire. The accounts vividly showed the fire's chaos and destruction, work that AP's member news organizations praised then, including this from the Fort Wayne Daily Gazette in Indiana: "Most heartily do we agree with the Terre Haute Express that the ‘General Agent of the Western Associated Press, Hon. W.H. Smith, deserves the thanks of the country for the splendid manner in which he performed his duties at Chicago last week.' With the telegraph buildings burned, and everything in the worst confusion, the most graphic and accurate reports were sent out promptly to all parts of the country." WYMG-FM 100.5 CHATHAM Update: Kitchen Fire at Burger King in Palatine Involved Fryer Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Palatine responded about 10:07 a.m. Wednesday, October 6, 2021 to a report of a fire in the kitchen at Burger King, 75 West Northwest Highway in Palatine. Firefighters arrived four minutes later to find smoke showing from the roofline and evacuation at Burger King. Initial responding crews met with the employees who reported a fire in the kitchen. The initial fire crew quickly investigated and found a fire involving a commercial fryer. Fire crews activated the commercial fire suppression system to extinguish a majority of the fire. Multiple fire extinguishers were also used to aid in extinguishment of the fire. Additional crews searched the building and confirmed there were no victims while other crews checked the roof and above the ceiling spaces for hidden fire. THE CARDINAL PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Massive fire destroys apartment complex in Texas A massive fire destroyed an apartment complex on the north side early Friday morning and firefighters had a tough time putting it out. The fire broke out around 3 a.m. near Castle Hills. So far, there haven't been any reports of people injured, but several pets have been seen roaming around nearby. Firefighters rushed to the scene south of Loop 410 in the 7900 block of Jackson Keller Road. They said the close proximity of the buildings made fighting the fire more challenging because it spread easily from one building to another. About a dozen apartment units were destroyed, but officials said some of those units were vacant. WLWT-TV NBC 5 CINCINNATI New documentary recounts deadly 1981 Star Hotel fire in Vermont VIDEO: Nearly 40 years ago, a fire at the Star Hotel in Bellows Falls claimed the lives of two young firefighters. Now, there's a new documentary out during Fire Prevention Week helping to raise money for a park dedicated to them. The evening of Dec. 29, 1981, firefighters were called to a blaze at the hotel. "They were doing rescue work operations. When they arrived on the scene there was a notification that people were inside and they were trapped. And they went in to rescue, to save a life," former Bellows Falls fire chief John Wood said. It was a perfect storm: a brand-new fire chief who hadn't gotten to the scene yet, freezing temperatures, an old building, lots of smoke and chaotic communication. Believing more people were inside, Bellows Falls Firefighters Terry Brown and Dana Fuller went into the flames to get them out. WCAX-TV CBS 3 BURLINGTON PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
