'Wonder Woman': Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire District Paramedic Dies After Battle With Disease The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire District is mourning the loss of a firefighter-paramedic who died following a battle with a new illness, just years after successfully beating cancer. The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District announced Wednesday evening the death of firefighter-paramedic Tammie Pullin. "It's with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of our sister." Pullin started her career with the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire District in 2006 and served the community that she was born and raised in for almost 15 years. Several years ago she overcame cancer and then was recently diagnosed with an autoimmune disease related to her previous cancer diagnosis, the fire district said. The new health challenges rendered her disabled and unable to continue with her duties as a firefighter on the department. ALGONQUIN-LAKE IN THE HILLS PATCH State and local fire safety experts tout new 10-year smoke detector law at St. Charles Fire Department State and local fire safety experts joined local lawmakers at the St. Charles Fire Department to make the public aware of Illinois' new 10-year smoke detector law, which has been expanded to also apply to the City of Chicago. "In 2020, there were 107 residential fire deaths in Illinois and sadly nearly 70 percent of these deaths are occurring in homes without working smoke detectors," said Margaret Vaughn, Illinois Fire Safety Alliance/IL Firefighters Association Government Affairs Director. To have the technology readily available to save lives and prevent injuries and yet not use it, is something that needed to change. The Illinois Fire Safety Alliance worked with the General Assembly to pass a law, which will require Illinois residents to replace their old smoke detectors with the type that has a long-term 10-year sealed battery by the end of 2022. DAILY HERALD - METERED SITE Van Plows Into Tastee Bites Restaurant in Joliet PHOTOS: A small west-side restaurant along Jefferson Street may be closed for several days after a van plowed through the glass and entered the restaurant Wednesday night. The crash happened around 7 p.m. Nobody was injured, Patch learned. Tastee Bites is located at 2953 W. Jefferson St. The restaurant has a small seating area, and much of its business is from carryout orders. Wednesday night's crash was first reported by Joliet resident Bob Hernandez, who went inside Tastee Bites to produce one of his popular Facebook Live videos. "As you can see, a terrible situation here," Hernandez informed his followers. The restaurant owner was in the back kitchen of Tastee Bites getting an order ready when he heard what sounded like an explosion, Hernandez told everyone. WOODRIDGE PATCH Bloomington Fire Department says T-shirt selling texts are a scam Bloomington's Fire Department is alerting the public of a texting scam going around. In a Facebook post, the department said it received multiple reports from residents that received a text reminding them to buy "limited edition" City of Bloomington Fire Department T-shirts. Eric Davison, the BFD's public information officer, said this is a scam targeting other departments across the country. He said the fire department is not in the business of making money selling shirts. "We have a way to send texts out to the public in different forms. Usually, you'd have to sign up for those, but that's not something we're going to use for a fundraiser. That would be an emergency type situation," Davison said. Davison said if you're unsure about the validity of something to reach out and ask. KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS WIU Students Honored for Volunteerism with Cass-Putman Rescue Squad Three Western Illinois University students recently received the U.S. President's Volunteer Service Award for their work with the Cass-Putman Rescue Squad. They were recognized with the service award at a ceremony on Sept. 11 in Cuba. The trio were nominated by Cass-Putman Rescue Squad Chief Bob Schnarr "As I've been saving lives in my community for 43 years, it's time to train the next generation of first responders, which is why I started the program to educate students first hand," Schnarr said. PHOTOS: Bacon-fueled fire burns semi on I-80 in Utah A semi trailer hauling bacon and other meat products caught fire on Interstate 80, near where it intersects with State Street, closing an off ramp for cleanup early Thursday morning. The driver of the westbound truck noticed the fire that apparently started with a mechanical issue, according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden. The unidentified driver was able to stop driving and get out of the vehicle before flames fully engulfed the trailer. The fire closed the exit ramp to State Street and because of grease from bacon and other meats, it was still closed at 3:30 p.m. while cleanup efforts continued. John Gleason with the Utah Department of Transportation said it appeared the road wasn't damaged while the fire was contained to the truck itself. However the fire did release "a lot of grease." KSL-TV NBC 5 SALT LAKE CITY Woman in Ohio follows mom's footsteps with goal of becoming a firefighter Capt. Courtney Kelly has had the firefighting bug since she was a little girl. "Once I became a paramedic, I was, I was sold on fire," Kelly said. Kelly, who has been with the Youngstown Fire Department for 15 years, was the last female hired by the department. It's little wonder that her daughter, Maddie, now wants to take her shot, ever since completing the firefighter academy at Choffin Career and Technical Center. "Once I did that, then it kind of switched my mind, and I knew that I just wanted to do this job," Maddie Kelly said. Last month, Maddie became only the second woman to pass the department's tough agility test since her mother did it in 2006. Now, she's on a waiting list, along with other potential recruits. Of the 28 who took the written exam, only 20 of them took the agility test for the department, and four of them failed it. WKBN-TV CBS 27 YOUNGSTOWN Florida firefighter Combat Challenge team world champs at physically-demanding event The St. Lucie County Firefighter Combat Challenge team took top honors in a competition last week as world champions in events at the Manatee Observation and Education Center in Fort Pierce. The challenge involves firefighters donning full bunker gear competing on a course with a series of five physically-demanding challenges. The team also won the world championship last year. "Anybody who can do it in under 2 minutes is a pretty special athlete for sure," said team co-captain Matt Coney, in his 21st year with the St. Lucie County Fire District. He said his agency does well because it has three of the overall fastest racers, with Brian Riebe holding a state record. "It's an average of our three fastest runners on our five-person team," he said. Coney, 46, said he started competing in 2012. "We really are more about the team, the team awards," Coney said. TC PALM Virginia firefighter turned pastor now serves others on the football field Jason Elmore has walked several paths in life, none of which he ever planned. For some people, Elmore was the face of the Chesterfield Fire Department. with whom he served for 20 years. He originally wanted to join the police department, but a fateful quirk of the regulations changed his course. "Once I became 18 years old, I realized I couldn't be a police officer until I was 21," Elmore said. "So I started volunteering as a firefighter. It didn't take long after that for me to realize this was going to be a career for me in public safety." As a firefighter, Elmore spent half a century helping his community through some of its worst moments. Many of those moments have stuck with him, including a woman who was severely burned. "We stopped for a moment and made sure we got her husband into the ambulance before we took her to the helicopter to make sure he was able to see her one last time," he recalled. WTVR-TV CBS 6 RICHMOND Deadly crowd surges have happened for decades; Safety standards exist, but they're not required nationwide Paul Wertheimer has spent four decades trying to help prevent deadly crowd surges since a disaster at a concert by The Who changed his life. Eleven young people, ages 15 to 27, died in a crowd crush at Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum in 1979. "There were piles of shoes and clothing," said Wertheimer, who responded to the scene as the city's public information officer. "I couldn't shake the feeling after studying this incident and being there." At the time, there were no federal regulations about crowd safety. Fast-forward to 2021, and that hasn't changed. But the recent tragedy at Houston's Astroworld Festival, which killed nine people ages 14 to 27, has renewed questions about whether national regulations are needed — and what can be done now to prevent another deadly crowd surge. There is no federal law on crowd safety. But the National Fire Protection Association's 101 Life Safety Code is considered the gold standard, said Wertheimer.
