Collinsville Firefighter Colin Fuhrmann has been awarded the Medal of Valor by the Illinois State Fire Marshal. Facing mortal danger, Fuhrmann demonstrated courage and dedication despite the risk presented to him in order to take lifesaving actions for the resident of the home. Also recognized for their excellence and professionalism in service during the same fire was Firefighters Lieutenant Frank Arnold, Lieutenant Chris Castens, Firefighter David Badgett, Firefighter John Canull, Firefighter Eric Freeman, Firefighter Daniel Gulledge, Firefighter Justin Verner and Firefighter Jim Wilderman, of the Collinsville Fire Department, who received the Firefighter Excellence Unit Citation Award. At 11:57 p.m. on Jan. 4, 2021, Collinsville firefighters received a call of a fire in an apartment. Upon arrival they were informed that a Collinsville Police officer on scene believed there was an individual still in the building.

A fire late Thursday night caused an estimated $125,000 damage to a Peoria pub. The Peoria Fire Department was called about 10:20 p.m. to Donnelly's Irish Pub at 4501 North Rockwood Drive, where first responders saw smoke coming from the roof. Battalion Chief Lore Baxter said in a news release that the first crew on the scene worked to extinguish a fire coming from the hood vent on the roof. The second crew put out remaining fire in the kitchen, said Baxter. The business was closed for the night, and no one was hurt. Baxter said it took crews about 35 minutes to get the fire under control. The fire department lists the fire as accidental, but an investigator was called to the scene to determine the exact cause and where the fire started.

Over a dozen fire departments battled an hours-long fire involving a vehicle, machinery and mulch at a mulch supplier near Hebron Wednesday. The Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection District responded at 10:34 a.m. Wednesday to Northwest Wood Products, 16306 Hebron Road in Harvard, for a report of a vehicle fire. While firefighters were responding, the call was upgraded to a structure fire response because the fire was reportedly spreading, Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection District Chief Thomas Linneman said. Firefighters arrived and found a large tub grinder and a semi-truck fully engulfed in flames. The fire was spreading to two very large piles of mulch, Linneman said. The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated due to the extreme heat and rural location that firefighters battled in.

Two 15-year-old boys in Alton, Illinois, were rushed to a hospital Thursday morning after showing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the Alton Fire Department. The teens were inside a home on Mather Street near Davis Street. First responders arrived shortly after 8 a.m. A fire department statement indicated the teens were sleeping in a room with all the doors closed. An adult in another part of the house discovered the teens were unresponsive and called 911. Neighbor Monty Hawkins is sending positive thoughts to any family and friends of the teens. He described the boys as "friendly and polite" and hopes they make a full recovery. Barbara Childers also lives near the scene of Thursday's emergency. She is wishing for a full recovery. "I really feel for them," she said. "They're really nice people."

Two drivers were taken to a hospital after a dump truck crashed into the back of an Ohio Department of Transportation vehicle on a northern Ohio interstate Thursday morning. Before 7:20 a.m., an ODOT worker was headed to pick up a street sweeper from another location and had pulled his truck over on the way when he noticed trash on the side of the highway. He was still inside the cab, when a dump truck veered off, crashing without appearing to slow down. "Here's a guy doing his job…going above and beyond you know," said District 4 Deputy Gery Noirot during a Thursday afternoon news conference. "Behind me is the result of that accident…" he said, gesturing to a burned-out vehicle. The force pushed the burning trucks down an embankment near Green's Graybill Road, in the northbound lanes, as other drivers pulled over to help.

PHOTOS: I admit that I didn't remember, but my friend Lois Seymour did, that it was the 30th anniversary of a monstrous fire that broke out on May 3, 1991, at Madison's Central Storage & Warehouse Co.. It was later proclaimed to have been Madison's biggest fire ever by fire department officials. The fire at the huge food storage facility on Cottage Grove Road and Highway 51/151 in east Madison was later attributed to a forklift battery malfunction. The resulting blaze at the sprawling 500,000 square foot site took more than a week to extinguish because of burning insulation and some 20 million pounds of what we referred to as "government butter, cheese and meat". Madison Fire Department Chief Steven Davis had been with Madison Fire Department for just a couple years.

The toughest two minutes in sports will be hosted in Martin County this weekend. The Firefighter Combat Challenge is a grueling course that requires strength and endurance and showcases skills that firefighters use every day. The free-to-attend contest will be held Saturday and Sunday at Stuart Beach and is a regional qualifying event for the national competition scheduled to take place in Fort Pierce in September. Both Treasure Coast competitions are the only ones in Florida this year. The number one team in the world from Ukraine will be competing this weekend. The Treasure Coast Sports Commission was able to setup their arrival after the two-man crew took a train to Poland and then flew to Turkey and then to Florida. Both men said they had to take a break from training to help save people during the war, but now are in Martin County ready to represent their home country.

Birmingham Stallions linebacker Scooby Wright III has been one of the breakout stars of the inaugural United States Football League season. Through four games, the Stallions are undefeated. Wright has recorded 32 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and two passes defended to help Birmingham. Wright was the Stallions' first selection in the inside linebackers portion of the USFL Draft in February. He told Fox News Digital in a recent interview he graduated from a firefighting academy in California and was volunteering before he decided to put the pads and helmet on again. He had been two years removed from a short stint with the XFL, which ended due to the coronavirus pandemic. "After the XFL ended in 2020 in the pandemic, I went home to Northern California and I started taking firefighting prerequisite classes for the firefighting academy," Wright said.
