New Illinois Bill will provide property tax exemptions for injured first responders A Proposed Bill could provide property tax exemptions for first responders who were severely injured on duty. Senate Bill 15-72 which is co-sponsored by Rockford lawmakers Dave Vella, would create a $5,000.00 dollar homestead exemption for police officers and firefighters who suffered major injuries while on duty. If that first responder dies due to those injuries, the money is passed on to their spouse. The Bill passed the Senate. It now heads to the House. The I-Team found not only are many police, fire and emergency response agencies grappling with how and whether to urge their members to get vaccinated; many are also operating with an incomplete picture of who has received the shot. The I-Team requested vaccination data from nearly two dozen police and fire departments in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. It found each is tracking the vaccination status of their force differently, if at all. Nearly half of 22 departments said they're not tracking vaccinations, with some citing privacy concerns and noting vaccines are voluntary. WRC-TV NBC 4 WASHINGTON DC West Virginia dive team member talks about finding alleged murder weapon in lake VIDEO: A possible murder weapon has been found at the bottom of a lake nearly a year after the killing. When Williamson firefighter Shane Runyon went through water rescue training, he never imagined he'd use those skills to help with a murder investigation. Williamson Police Department Chief Grady Dotson enlisted the Williamson Fire Department dive team's help after getting a tip that a hammer allegedly used to kill John Jackson in May of last year had been thrown into Laurel Lake. "We did some interrogations and interviews, and the tip came from one of them," Dotson said. James Church, Charles Jarvis, and Terry Jarvis had already been indicted in the case, accused of killing Jackson and burning down the apartment where the crime allegedly happened on Elm Street. The suspects are awaiting trial. "We're very familiar with the lake," Runyon said. "We spend a lot of time diving there, training there." Why is part of a study between the Duke Cancer Institute, Duke University, and North Carolina firefighters. As part of News 13's Deadlier than Fire series and documentary, News 13's got a look at the groundbreaking work and why it could have a national impact. "A lot of time firefighters are naturally inquisitive to where they want to get to the deeper answer," explained Durham Firefighter Corey Miller. Miller's curiosity sparked a letter several years ago. "And that partnership has been growing ever since," said Miller. That curiosity has blossomed into a joint effort between Duke University researchers, Duke Cancer Institute, and Durham fire station four, just six miles apart, now collaborating for the first time.
